View Full Version : Why are INTJs so goofy?

What is it about the INTJ type that makes us prone to oddball humor? (Monty Python fans raise your hand, Al Yankovich fans raise your hands, Robot Chicken fans raise your hands.)
I'm sure that I am not the only one around here that has noticed this. There have been threads and postings that have pointed this out, and several threads have gone on for days (weeks?) strictly in that vein – taking a single comment, or thought to extreme lengths. What is it about us that triggers these flights of fancy from a group that is considered to be the least prone to humor of all of the types?
Is it the desire to dazzle each other with the wittiness of our thoughts? Is it the minor Se "bustin' out" and expressing itself? Is it that we all are just a bunch of goof-balls with a captive audience?
Why are you guys so damned goofy!!

I can relate to oddball humour better and therefore find it more funny than mainstream.
Monty Python's Life of Brian and Holy Grail were oddball in that they:
1. stuck two figures at authority (great INTJ stuff) and
2. stretched simple notions to extreme logical conclusions (more great INTJ stuff)- such as deciding that the airspeed velocity of two African Swallows would be insufficient for them to carry a coconut from one continent to another.
Interesting thread- standard INTJ trait descriptions don't consider our preferred humour- we're certainly not humourless!

Good question!
I love weird Al!
But I don't get British humor at all.
I think it's the "N" at work. One thought triggers another.

*monty python fan raises hand*
it could be that this kind of humor is some kind of intj. the example of the two swallows (which I found extremely exhilarating in the film itself) has really some kind of intj humor.
the bazar-scene in the life of brian might be another great example. :D

I like Monty Pythons grotesque humor (black knight gets limbs chopped off). And Weird Al's sickening humor. Robot chicken is a combination of both.
Then again, I find my self laughing at things not meant to be humorous. Such as 300, when the spartan gets his head chopped off... I'm the only one in the theatre laughing my ass off. lol... out of know where *SHLINK!*... head drops to the ground, and his intestines let go... lol...

*raises hand for weird al and monty python*
I **love** to laugh. I laugh by myself, I am often told my laugh is contagious, I make others laugh with the weird stuff I say. Also, I find my humor is very similar to INTJ humor, as in the same. An INTJ friend said something humorous in the car once, started explaining, stopped and was like "what I am doing?" I said "yeah, I understood" to which he said "yeah, I forget sometimes because most people are like what?? when I say something". (I just completely blew away all form there, sorry English fiends like myself).
:D
Of my many INTJ friends (really, how have I found so many in the world, and I don't mean here), they've *all* had really wacky senses of humor. Once I got to know them, I discovered that they really love laughing and being funny. Maybe it keeps xNTJs sane while we plot to take over the world.
That reminds me: Pinky and The Brain anyone?

I'm gonna have to raise both hands and add a third.
I think that everyone's unique sense of humor is tied up in things that make that individual uncomfortable. Funny things are always on the edge of unacceptable, which is why people disagree on what is funny.
With respect to INTJs, and specifically myself, I think that I'm attracted to the absurd and the ironic. For example, there's this scene in The Office where Jim is using some of Dwight's stationary to fax him messages from Future Dwight. That's not the absurd thing, that is funny, but what is absurd is that Dwight buys it and goes sprinting across the office to stop Stanley from drinking the poisoned coffee.
Did anyone here find Napoleon Dynamite funny? I thought it was brilliantly hilarious but a lot of people just fell asleep watching it.

Yeah, it's interesting how silly my INTJ friend can get. Yesterday we had this wonderful argument over whether he should or shouldn't get a spoon every time we go to the cafeteria. It went crazy overboard, with him trying to talk about inertia and me pointing out that he was only taking into account the times he would notice that he'd need a spoon after having already sat down. The sorts of laughs over taking tiny things and taking them to the extremes that I can share with very few other people. Maybe it's an IN thing? Who knows.

Once, in class, someone was talking about something that had to be done due to all the poor starving children in Africa. Needless to say, I burst out laughing so hard that everyone probably thought I was even wierder than I am...
I love laughter in general, though. In fact I'm not sure I've ever met a person I haven't managed to get laughing quite quickly, and my wit is as sarcastic as any INTJ's could possibly be.

I'm an exception. I have a completely random sense of humour. Some times, some jokes will make me laugh, some others, they won't. I think my mood has something to do with my humour. Oh, well.

INTJs tend to be goofy, because it's usually the easiest way for us to fit in socially. Clowning around both serves to break our usual cold mannerisms and also help us work our way into a social situation.

I **love** to laugh. I laugh by myself, I am often told my laugh is contagious, I make others laugh with the weird stuff I say. Ditto. My father says he "admires my unrestrained laugh", and claims that he instantly knows whether I'm in the room by the laugh. I also laugh when I'm alone in my room and watching or reading something funny. And sometimes, I laugh while just walking along because I thought of something funny.
My humour is also very silly and surrealistic, which usually leads to me being the only one laughing, so I have learned to find expressions of WTF amusing.

I guess the heart of it is that when an inherently odd premise is taken as fact and then extrapolated to the furthest level, the absurdity of the conclusions is what is funny (i.e. sparrow's airspeed, Minnie & Goofy, "White 'N Nerdy", etc.)
I was a fan of Pinky & The Brain as well as Dexter's Laboratory. The Office (both the US and UK versions) is a real winner in my book. I'm not a fan of all Britcom's but Monty Python ranks high, as does Fawlty Towers.
Does anyone know of, or remember The Firesign Theater from the '70s? They did several comedy albums and I was a huge fan of their work. Their comedy is kinda 'stream of consciousness' but hilarious (to me).

Oooh...this is a good learning thread for me. The 4 INTJs whom I know never laugh. Granted, I see them in serious settings (hospitals or church). Maybe I can learn about the INTJ funny bone here.
Do any of you like the Red Green show? or the movie Strange Brew?

I made a banana man for an INTJ friend of mine, so this makes me laugh -- a lot -- because we then thought he should dress as a banana man for halloween. There was not enough group energy to make the costume though.
It's a long story why this banana thing with him started, so I won't bother. Just trust me, it's hilarious.
Thinking of the holidays coming up made me think of this: Has anyone else seen the Santa Clause 2? For some reason, I laugh almost the whole way through that movie. The first time I watched it, I had to pause it once and just laugh for about 5 minutes at a particular scene involving hot cocoa.

i'm actually good at impersonating people and my entj buds enjoy this talent of mine. if we meet a new person who seems to have strangely odd mannerisms, when i'm quiet throughout the whole meeting, my buds know i will be mocking them the next time.... and one of the reasons why i'm quiet in class :D my blockmates in college were even forcing me to join the "guess the profie contest" because they find me sick at impersonating a lot of our professors especially the gay ones.... i got stage fright so i didn't join :P

ENTPs totally destroy INTJs in terms of the humor thing though.
Pffft whatever, INTJ's do everything better.
I can't be funny on demand, sometimes I'm just on a roll and can't stop. But I love sarcasm and dark humor. If you can't laugh at all the fucked up things in life what can you laugh at :D

I don;t think its about "goofy". Just liking to see situations from unique perspectives (Thats what makes a Joke novel).
I think also most analytical types can "predict" most situations and as such a left field observation can throw them off that thought path, and makes it funny.

This is where my mind took me when I read your statement.
In the first frame, I imagined a serene setting in the forest with a deaf man smiling and enjoying the wonderment of nature. In the next frame, the tree is descending toward him and with one forceful strike he is nailed into the forest floor.
(Excuse me, I need a tissue to dry my eyes.)
Of course, this explains why I like Tom and Jerry cartoons.
P.S. Another tear jerker is a scene from the movie "So I Married An Axe Murderer."

No, I was thinking of the scene when the family was watching the soccer game and the father tells the son (who is sitting in front of the tv) to move his head. Then the father manages an observation of his sons head and body in proportion to one another. Concluding, his son is comparable to that of an orange on a toothpick.
The visual in my head is comical!

I've found that socially people get tired of my 'I don't know' or 'probably' default answers to questions that I don't have a five second answer to. So if this is the case then I thought I'll just go 'goofy' and give the best response I can think of. Then this leads to 'are you ever serious?' questions which I always want to respond to with 'well ask me a serious question' then... but I don't so the circle continues and I realise I don't have an answer to the question, if there ever was one so... watch me wiggle my eyebrows...uninteresting monologue though, don't you dare think. :\ woo new section for me.

Oh boy, am I in the minority! I'm a flip flop of this. I absolutely think Monty Python is a waste of time. The Office (and Office Space) are loathed by me. Love good British comedy, but not stupid British comedy (Keeping Up Appearances...too funny).
Then again, my wife thinks my humor is goofy.
However, I do know from previous posts, I have in common with you a love of good 70s R&B and disco. So, maybe I'm not a total reject. (I would use a smiley face at this point, but where are they?).

As much as I hate to derail the thread, I think that the silliness of INTJs is one of their most endearing traits. Their ability to be analytical and shrewd and have their act together while still playing around with silliness from time to time jives well with me.
I love irony and sarcasm. Too much political correctness in humor nowadays tends to irk me.
Jane Austen or PG Wodehouse's humor always works with me.
In TV series, I am a fan of the Office (US version). It is the kind of humor that just doesn't get old and leaves me in splits. The actors remaining serious while saying sheer silliness is the main asset of this show (cf Dwight's character, probably one of the funniest).

Well I hate people who are in the flow of the normal social slavery since it has never proven its worth. Its hard for me to resist against a cynical or in any way kind of ironical or sarcastic way of expressing myself. Besides it does give me confidence sometimes or atleast idiots to feel sick about other than myself and my superiority over most the plebs.
The same with myself laughing, I can basically laugh at anything sort of ironic whatever it is, given the right moment or wrong moment.

Well, I'm an INFJ, and I tend to like this kind of humor as well. Although I try not to laugh at it in front of people I know, I often look it up or think about it and snicker to myself privately. I think INTJ's are only more likely to express unusual kinds of humor.

Hey, you stole my thoughts! :O
But yes, that's exactly what I think of the situation. Most people know me by my humour, and with pretty much everything I do, especially if it's a boring mundanity like a report or presentation, I try to slip some humourous commentary on the subject matter in there. Most people just plain don't get it, think it's offensive etc But for the people who do get it, they really enjoy it and identify me with it.

Agreed, totally and absolutely, especially about irony. Sometimes I have a real problem when I can set up a really ironic situation that would be absolutely hilarious, but would violate my morals (which I do bend at times, but never break).

Irony in all of its deepest forms always get me. I also tend to notice a lot of small details which change my perception of something enough that I find it funny.
Past that, most overt attempts at comedy I simply do not find funny.

Heh I've got quite a weird sense of humour also. I love tons of stuff mentioned in this thread, like Monty Python, The Office or Robot Chicken. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is awesome! A real hidden gem.
Anyone seen Dilbert? (the comic strips and also the TV series) I can't get enough of it, yet most others I know just can't see the humour. Also Seinfeld, that's a staple of any comedy diet. George ftw.
and how could I forget Arrested Development. My favourite TV show of all time. and Fox cancelled it, the bastards. >(((

Hmm good question, though I think it is because I rather enjoy making people laugh. I have a strange satisfaction when I can simply crack someone up till their sides hurt. Though I don't always show my humorus side, Aquaintances tend to get a watered down version while the closest friends tend to get the unedited version ^^
Hmm so not really sure what it is, but that's my bit.

OMG.
When people ask about my sense of humor, I'm not sure what to respond, since I have at least three senses of humor.
One is a very internet-oriented, meme-oriented sense of playing off other people's stupid ideas. I hardly ever use this because hardly anyone understands it (or realizes it's supposed to be ironic). LOLzorz.
The second is a very stupid, base, slapstick sense of humor. I love dirty jokes but I avoid making them because women can't get away with as much of that as men. People might assume a man who cracks a lot of dirty jokes has a dirty mind, but with a woman they start to think there's something wrong with you. Or that you do these things in real life. But I do find a lot of very stupid things funny and frequently laugh at pain, especially my own. Not out of callousness, but out of amusement at how I'm carrying on when all that happened was, well, pain.
The third sense of humor I use most often, which is an extremely dry and ironic take on things. I have to be careful with this too because everyone (!) reacts to tone of voice rather than using their judgment with what I'm saying. If I say in a totally dry tone, "Oh yeah, I think the Nazis were one of the best things that ever happened to Germany," even people who've known for years how tender-hearted I am will get outraged. It's an interesting reaction in terms of communication studies but extremely frustrating. I always like to challenge people to use their heads. Anyway, I suppose I don't let myself go crazy with any of the senses of humor.
I find very few sitcoms funny. Most of them are way too predictable. I loved Whose Line is it Anyway though.
But I am definitely goofy... or silly... that's the playful side of me. I think I use it more than most INTJs and especially when I'm with kids.

I love ironic humor, absurd humor, offensive humor and sarcastic dry humor. Monty Python, Family Guy, Robot Chicken, Weird Al and South Park all have different degrees of each, but theya re all very funny to me. I think my favorite is absurd humor, when something is just completely out of left field it makes me laugh out loud.
When I make a joke, it is almost always with a straight face, and usually people aren't sure if I was trying to be funny or not (the dumb people). About 2 years ago, I had just moved to a new city and I was hanging out with a bunch of people I barely knew. Everyone had been poking fun at my friend because he had a sunburn. I hadn't said anything yet, then I piped in "Ha ha! other people's pain is funny." Of course the dumb people thought that I was an a-hole, when the exact opposite was true.
I like sick, twisted humor too, like dead baby and rape jokes.

I'm not entirely convinced that there is a specific style of humor that is a trait of an INTJ. I've been thinking this one over and I believe that you can come to a more accurate classification by eliminating comedy styles that most INTJ's generally do not "get".
I know a lot of extroverts that love the same style of humor mentioned in this thread.
With that being said, I believe that an INTJ will find the meaning of complex humor better than the average Joe so there may be something to that aspect of this conversation. The average person wants easy to grasp comedy that requires little thinking.
I believe that it's the high that is gained after figuring out the comical meaning of a complex bit that adds to our laughter.

You're familiar with Mahatma Gandhi? Well as you may know he was a vegetarian. Something that tends to happen to vegetarians is that they suffer from chronic bad breath and their bones can become brittle if they don't get enough calcium and protein. In addition to the vegetarianism Gandhi went barefoot a lot, so he had some really thick calluses on his feet.
Because of all this, you could say that Gandhi was a super callused, fragile mystic, hexed with halitosis. ;D

Mary Poppins Police = a brigade of ssharp-featured British nannies - all dressed in black. Their hair is slicked back and parted down the middle, but you can't tell that because of the "very proper" bonnet topping their coiffeur. Each one carries a (black, of course) umbrella - always open - which is the primary mode of transport. There are two divisions of MPP; the happy, good ones and the stern, bad ones (convenient for good cop / bad cop exercises).
Good MPP always have a song in their hearts and a perpetual smile on their faces. Combined with their ample bosoms, they are a respite for sleepy children and excitable young men. Bad MPP are typically razor-thin and have a continual scowl. Their forte is to reign terror and unmitigated discipline within a 200m radius.

I love Tom and Jerry and Monty Python and the Bugs Bunny cartoons when he was jackin up Porky Pig. My parents were worried about me at a very young age. I always laugh at the inapproprite times during the movie, like when someone is beheaded, maimed or run over.....hahaha......ooops sorry.
Anyway who gives a @#$t.....if you cant live sarcastically.....you aint livin..

I am terribly sarcastic, and most people don't "get" me. If someone angers me, and I know they are an easy target, I will say something sarcastic that will go right over their head. It makes me feel so much better about myself.
