I know that for INTJ's (and INTP's for that matter) the topic of Cars and other forms of transport tend to be split between:
a) I don't care as long as it gets me from A to B
b) I'm a driver, and I'm interested in knowing what makes my Car/Bike tick.
So which are you?
What cars/bikes to people drive or ride?
Do you do your own mechnical work or are you at least able to do some basic stuff?
My bundle of fun (aka - money pit) - A R34 Skyline GTT sedan:

Category A. As long as it functions, I don't really care.
I do have a liking for very cool-LOOKING old cars with chrome trim, but I don't really care about specs. Same with for computers.

Oh no! Please don’t get me started…I'm…trying…to…resist…
..and failed;
Here's my car;
A 1999 Mazda Miata (10th Anniversary Edition BTW) that I've owned since it was brand new. I do all my own work on it and it has a pretty good list of modifications that help it to go FAST – and I have more "projects" planned in the near future. Lots of people consider the Miata to be a "girls car" (it's small and "cute" and non-intimidating – definitely not a he-man's car) but it's light and agile (corners like a gazelle being chased by a cheetah) and with the right modifications can be made to produce over 300 horsepower!
I also have a motorcycle, a 1999 Suzuki TL1000S. I don't have any pix readily available, but I'll snap one this evening and post it. But just imagine a red-orange, V-twin sportbike that makes 102HP. To put that number in perspective, the Miata – stock – makes 120HP in a car that weighs 2700 lbs. Now take away 18lbs, 2 wheels and 2050lbs and you pretty much have my bike. It sounds like a Harley on steroids and goes like stink. I've had it up to 165MPH (yes, on the public highways) and it still was pulling…hard.
For all of those "Speed Kills" people…[explicative deleted]! I drive fast all the time (just ask my wife) and I'm not dead yet. I have had accidents, but it's because other people have run into me or because I've had to dump a bike to avoid a collision with an inattentive driver.

A All about function....
Don't really care to much about specs as long as it has a decent mileage. I'd like to be all eco-friendly and that...
Though I *do* care about specs with computers and some other stuff that I know stuff about haha

I always look into the technicals when it comes to buying anything to do with technology. I did a shitload of research when I bought my last mp3 player.
I have had boughts of the car fanatic syndrome. I've always had a dream car. It's switched from the Acura RSX S edition (get some body painting done, slight alterations on the body etc), to the Nissan 350Z (orange, and just the way it is... perhaps a change in the wheel covers, but that's about it). But I'm probably not going to look too much into it until I can afford a decent car... which will be at least 5 years from now.
So right now, I'm just looking into a small car, that's really worth it's price; especially with the damn petrol prices these days. My mother was dangling "mini cooper" in front of me the other day, saying "how about we get you a mini cooper."
Psh

I said it looked cool. I didn't say I'd let myself be seen driving it.
And you're right. Defiantly a dark metallic/gunmetal gray, tinted windows... I love tinted windows, it saves so much on air conditioning/sun block. Let me say that I like to personalize: spoiler, wheels, comfy seats, nothing huge and ugly.
The crazy cars were products of back when I was young and impressionable. Of course, if I had crap loads of money, I wouldn't mind having one in my garage. It'd be a fun canvas that's for sure.

A. Don't even own one. I've always lived within walking distance of my workplace, as well as a bookstore and grocery store. I take the bus. Seems cheaper. If ever I move to some place that would require a vehicle, I'd finally have to go out and obtain one of those license thingies. I doubt that I'd be one of those who'd always be messing with their vehicle, but I'd certainly read up on how to do as much of my own maintainence as possible.

I rode a bike for 10 years then got a truck only when I was hired on with the fire department. Now I own 2 pickups, 2 cars, 2 motorcycles and an SUV, all purchased used. I can't pass up a good deal and I'm going broke saving money! I'm actually financing 3 of the vehicles, one for my oldest son and 2 for a friend. But, no matter how I look at it, it's all transportation.

Wife hates mine, she being one of those ESFJ's she prefers looks over performance, I don't care what it looks like, as long as it puts a big wide grin on my face when I am driving it. I also have a 1994 Chevrolet Caprice "9C1" with the LT1 engine. (for those non car folks reading this) that means I have an old unmarked North Carolina State Police car, with the Corvette engine.
Wife hates it too, but she does have one thing to say about my "toys"

When she runs late for work, she used to take "Big Blue" (what we call the old cop ca"r, so she could really cut thru traffic.

I'm an A. My husband used to get mad at me because I always had a dirty car and his truck was always spotless. One day I told him that I saw the perfect bumpersticker on the way home from work. It said, "A clean car is the sign of a sick mind." He got mad. I just don't understand how a man can have a spotless vehicle and then throw his dirty clothes on the floor. I just want my vehicle to be reliable.

My car's a 1993 blue Toyota Celica (go sporty cars that let me knock the price from $5K to $4K at the dealership). I'll definitely put up a picture of it when I get home though late next week (Wednesday or Thursday). Camshaft. You need some. :3 If you're planning on doing serious engine modding, do it before your appearance mods. That way you won't be crying when your ratchet slides off your side cover and scratches your $6000 paint job.
Just a thought, do what you want with it. Also note that this is coming from a guy who is in denial about the existence of curved roads and the importance of the weight factor in power/weight ratio. Your mileage may vary.

The Cross Sport is different here than there. If money, environment, fuel consumption, and tickets were not an issue, I'd have an STI Forester.

I used to have a Datsun 510 back in the 70's – the original 3-box compact car silhouette. If you didn't know any better you'd mistake it for the typical Japanese compact of the day. Little did people know but it had;
- 10.5:1 high compression pistons
- High-lift camshaft
- Twin Webber carb's
- Ported & polished heads
- Unshrouded valves
- Tube header w/ 2" exhaust pipes
- No catalytic converter
- Koni shocks
- Cut-down springs
- HD sway bars
- Gutted interior
- 60-series tires (hey, it was the 70's!)
My hero was Bob Sharp who campaigned a 510 in the IMSA GTU class in the early 70's competing (and winning) against Porsches. I patterned my car after his race cars. My little "rice-burner" could do 150MPH easy and 14-second quarter miles (good, considering the stock 510 would only do the quarter mile in 19 or 20 seconds). I embarrassed a lot of muscle cars on campus! It was fire-engine red and had lots of bondo on it, but the point was to go fast, not look good.
Ah, those were the days!

A. I usually care about 2 things: mileage and reliability. Someday I'd like to drive a V-6, but no hurry. I am considering taking some kind of basic automotive class so I can do a few things myself (because some things just feel silly to pay for), but we'll see.
Of course, if I could, I'd live somewhere that had great public transportation so I didn't really need a car. I hear Portland has a good system.

Bah! You can get Torq-Thrusts and mag wheels for a thousand these days, and that's full set with wide rear wheels. Maybe 1.5k if you factor in good tires. Almost anything else is overpriced and dorky imo.
That said, I like to remind rivers that my cruisers (also have a '71 El Camino 327/auto sitting about), even in their presentable-but-imperfect states, are worth more as-is than their cars ever will be regardless of mods. And when they ask me about turning I just laugh; slowing down before a curve only gives me another opportunity to use my massive amounts of torque.

What's so special about a V6? V engines are a compromise to save space. Hell, they even make V6 fwd cars these days, ick!.
As for learning, get somebody you know that already knows how to teach you. It's one of those things that once you do it once with confidence (having somebody watching you over your shoulder) it's easy (especially for an NT). Especially the really basic stuff like oil changes etc.
And for everything else, even if I know the theory behind what needs to be done, chances are I'm not going to attempt it myself anyway since I know I don't have to tools to do it right. But at least knowing the theory means I'm not going to get ripped off by a mechanic.

Major B here. Could almost calll it obsessive.
I bought a totalled 90 Eagle Talon TSI AWD that was burned in an engine fire and turned it into my own animal over the course of two years to get it running. Since then I continue to put my main efforts and energys into this thing. I love it!
It makes between 360-380 horse power on a 4 cylinder turbocharged 2.0 motor, fuel injected of course.
Runs the 1/4 mile in high 12's at 110 m/hr. With a transmission that has bad synchros!
I drive it everyday and enjoy every aspect from working on it to driving it.
My other car is a 2006 Honda Civic SI. It makes 200hp @ 8000 rpm, SWEET! 2.0 liter DOHC connected to a 6 speed manual. Look at the dash of one sometime. It is a really cool two teir design.

Those Celicas last forever. A Celica that I had changed oil on recently had the motor go bad well into the 200 thousand mile mark.
Here is the photo of my car launching at the tree of a dragstrip.

I'm driving a Toyota RAV4 (2006). And although definitely fall into the what makes it tick catagory, my reasons for the vehicle I have are primarily solid design, duribility and economy (for what it does). In short I felt it would meet my long term needs, be durable enough to last well past the payments on it, and have a very good TCO ;)

Ha, myself and a bunch of friends took a RAV4 to moreton island for a weekend trip. For those that don't know (probably all over you) moreton island is a sand island off the coast of queensland here in australia. It has no sealed roads, everything is sand sand and more sand. Somehow, we made it through the weekend without getting bogged. It made for a hilarious time, especially smelling the oil in the auto trans burn as the car struggled through the soft sand

Eughhhhh...

Neither, as far as they're being catagorized here...
I understand that how you get from one point to another is more important than the simple fact alone that you've done it, for this reason the practical performance features are interesting to me.
Past that, I don't care to understand all the nuts and bolts since I'm not going to put any effort towards fixing a problem anyways. I also don't see the point in things like paint and aftermarket mufflers.
Practical performance, no junkers, no flashy street racers. :)

Here's my Toyota MR2 Supercharged '86 model. I've had it for about six years and can't bring myself to sell it! it sits idle these days.

I love the Miata and a friend drives a Skyline GTR, awesome car standard and when worked, there's nothing quite like 500HP in a straight line ;)

Thanks, yes my relationship with it is definately unhealty.
Its handling is similar to the NA model but you get serious torque off the line which was good because I'd be a length ahead before others had spooled up or had put their foot down.
I don't think you can match it for performance/age/price and "fun factor"... and its a whole bag of that in the wet :)
I dont drive, i take a bus to where i need to go. Cheaper, easier and i dont have to worry about driving. And plus i was told by several people that i know that i should not drive. I have a tendency to get really pissed off at people who take there time or just stopping too much. So i guess i wouldn't be either a nor b. Not sure if i will every drive and have no clue what i would be looking for in a vehicle as longs as it gets me to where i go and isnt flashy at all. And must be black. All though several years ago i wanted to re furbish a old hearse, that would be good for me :)

I get the bus to work sometimes and if anyone asks how I got to work I say "In the Mercedes". The local buses are made by Mercedes Benz for some reason. Anyway, its kinda funny for a few seconds while they work out I don't own a Mercedes.

I hate waiting for buses though. The transport system where I am is horrible, you could get stuck waiting a whole hour if they mess up the schedule.
My impatience gets the best of me.

I took the bus for years while in public school. That experience has poisoned me towards public transport.

I usually take it as an excuse to get some exercise as opposed to parking under my desk (so to speak). Mind you if it was anymore than a 20 minute ride I probably wouldn't and it also comprises of a lot of other conditions, like getting up 15 minutes earlier. Plus there's nothing better than mingling with the peeples! ;).

Actually, I work 20 miles from home and the bus ride would be cross-town and would involve several busses and take over an hour. I would be mean, hateful, and exhausted by the time I got to work, and worse when I got home if I took the bus. As it is, I have to "decompress" from driving the freeway every day.
Actually, it'd be really nice if I could bike to class/work every day. It just sucks that I probably shouldn't bike during the winter...
Unless I put chains around my bike tires =/

No thanks, I'll stick to the good old internal combustion engine and burning dead dinosaurs any day!

Well I'd go with a motorized version if I could afford one.
A.
It can look like almost anything as long as it gets me from A-B.
If it's expensive I'd be constantly worried about theft or scratches etc. I'd actually prefer a cheap one.
Insurance is cheaper too.
I worry less on all fronts.

i motivate with a 2005 toyota scion xb.
i had one of the first in colorado, as i pre-ordered and waited for it to shipped.
the sales pitch went like this:
me - so...toyota, the boxy one.
sales guy - yeah, so, it's a new kinda budget line, you can get neon dash trim and super cool rims and like a spoile...
me - so, it's boxy, right? like simple, clean, box shaped....doesn't go fast, clean lines, good mpg?
sales guy - oh man, yeah. we have a super obnoxious marketing campaign, but you can change the led tint on the radio...
me - i'll take one of the boxy ones. black. however plain and cheap i can get.
sales guy - right. cool, bro (fucking seriously called me: bro). so there's a ton of options and customizable options and stuff. look at this brochur...
me - shhhh. stop talking. boxy one. here's money. call me when it's in. promise that it's 100% japanese parts and labour?
sales guy - word, bro. would you like to get some foglamps or custom rims, 'cause there's a ton of stuff you can do to make it stand out in a crowd...
me - call me when it's in.
love the boxy car. 30mpg in the city. easy to parallel park, lots of head room.

Due to budget/family constraints I drive a 2000 Chevy S10 Blazer.
But my heart cries out for the Bugatti Veyron (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.).
