Apparently, rap music is the product of a 25 hour blackout. People stole enough electronic equipment to kick-start the Hip Hop culture. Before the looting, they just couldn't get the stuff.

"...the looting of hi-fi stores during the 1977 New York City blackout propelled D.J. culture. ("It was like Christmas for black people," he said. "The next day there were a thousand new D.J.s.")"
Could you imagine America today without rap culture? It's taken up so much of the collective imagination it's hard to postulate what we'd be thinking about if it hadn't appeared. Apparently, it wouldn't be nearly as big as it is (if it existed at all) if not for that blackout. The history of the blackout is that it could have been prevented if one dude had flipped some switches in the correct order. So, in a way, that one guy's one action is responsible for rap.
That's some crazy 'butterfly' shit.
