View Full Version : Your history of avatars
I thought it would be interesting to see the history of avatars that we associate ourselves with.
Here are the ones I used on this forum:

Except for half an hour when I tried to get a picture I'd taken to work (the color wasn't good enough, so I didn't keep it), I've stuck with this one. So I guess just

Just to confuse everyone I shall change temporarily. There, now my history of avatars is

I passed from no avatar to current avatar and I'm not planning to change. It is my logo here in this forum and changing it wouldn't be rational.

Before I realized that a face on an avatar helps convey a presence better, I used this one:
http://members.shaw.ca/mercedesa/images/1.jpg
After that I switched to this one:
http://members.shaw.ca/mercedesa/images/6.jpg
I had some fun with Pirate day and a missing eye before I went purple.
http://members.shaw.ca/mercedesa/images/3.jpghttp://members.shaw.ca/mercedesa/images/4.jpg
I just had to add my purple one. I was pretty fond of it, but I love the dimension of more colour.

Maybe I'll try another monochromatic fur treatment in the future.

It makes me think Spock is whispering sweet nothings in Kirk's ear. I imagine Spock saying. "Captain, do you think the camera in the corner is on?". It makes me giggle. I've never pictured a Spock/Kirk coupling, but there is just something about the angle, the way they are standing and that curious smirk on Kirk's face. Makes me wonder where Spock's other hand is.

Well, here's my first one under the current rules. It's an image from Private Detective Stories, a pulp magazine from 1944.
I love making avatars, and did a bunch for my favorite comic book forum, http://www.captaincomics.us. You can see all the avatars I've ever made at http://s135.photobucket.com/albums/q137/comicsonthebrain/avatars/?start=all
My original avatar here was:

Then I had Hayley Williams:

And thus concludes my short, lame avatar history.

On avatars, I chose Reznor cause I'm a huge fan but the picture looks quite depressing and doesn't quite capture me. This thread has me thinking it's probably time for a change

The one I'm using now is the only one I've used on these forums. It is also the oldest as far as the picture goes, since the first custom avatar I ever made was from the same portrait. I've also used other avatars on other forums. I actually have a fondness for female avatars, but on the internet this leads people to assume I'm female, so I tend to use male avatars these days to avoid confusion. You can also tell I'm a stargate nerd, since three of these are characters from stargate. The first two are from SGA, are Sora the Genii, and Teyla Imagen. The fourth avatar down is from SG-1 and is a picture of Moloc.
Here are my avatars, they are all 80x80, since that is the pixel limit for most of the forums I frequent.

Sometimes I cannot help myself from wanting to know how things work. Figured I would pass this along so others know. And can decide what, if anything, they would like to do about it.
The short story
I was looking for a shortcut to someone's current custom avatar as there was a mustache conversation going on in another thread. I thought this picture was relevant and I wanted to make sure it was a persistent link for the thread, so I kept drilling down until I found it. And found a bit more. So if you have ever used a custom avatar and wanted to know exactly how many you have gone through. Follow these steps.
Go to the Members List menu drop down and find yourself and click on it.
Look in the address bar and make a note of the number at the end of the line. Right after the u= part.
So for mine. The link is
http://intjforum.com/member.php?u=4589
And my magic number is 4589.
Next, go to this link. http://intjforum.com/customavatars/
Scroll down until you find the file that starts with avatar & your number from step 2.
The number after the underscore is how many custom avatar pictures you have chosen to upload. Mistakes, duplicates or otherwise all counting the same as a new one.
Isn't that neat? I certainly thought it was until I realized that directory browsing was turned on. Not a good thing to have on unless you specifically want it on. And I do not know what the admins of the site (All hail god fsm the admins bow bow scrape scrape) intentions are. So I will leave it open to comments.

It doesn't tell you how many you've chosen, just how many times you've changed it, this includes mistakes. There is no way I've had 18 unique avatars. I believe that I've made 18 attempts in all to change my avatar though.

Looking forward in seeing yours.
I really like the first one.

Well, understandably I've only got the one avatar for my history here. But lemme see if I can't dig up a shortlist of what I've used on the internet overall, from oldest to newest!

And then, of course, the one I'm using now. There's some I left out 'cause I can't find links to them. Trust me, you're missing out

I was recently assimilated by DanteFallingOfNine (http://intjforum.com/member.php?u=5859) in this thread (http://intjforum.com/showthread.php?t=17173)*. I have meanwhile re-discovered my humanity, but I thought I'd preserve my borgified avatar here, for posterity. :wideeyed:

* Or, at least, I assume a Borg murder ritual would involve assimilation at some point. I was also suffocated, and blow-torched—but that's another story.

I'm curious to know what this picture is of. For example, who is the woman? Where is she? What is she fighting for? anything would help my thirst....

Mostly the Spartan avatar, but I used this for a while after a family death.

She's a Soviet named Roza Shanina (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roza_Shanina). She was a kindergarten teacher turned sniper (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_sniper) during the Great Patriotic War (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_Front_(World_War_II)).
I thought I'd preserve my borgified avatar here, for posterity.
I vote for keeping the borgified version in use.

I haven't changed mine and I don't plan on it. Space is my first and only true love.
That's a pretty dramatic career switch, there. 54 kills? Goodness.

I'm actually tempted to switch back now, in order to gain your favour... oh great forum overlord! http://zalmoxe.net/intjf/bowdown.gif
But no, I would do the Borg no justice; they are clearly the superior species. I still have these lousy human feelings to contend with, every now and then. I'm working on it, though.

The intriguing story behind that avatar makes me wonder about the rest. Will you enlighten us, Jezebel?

Offhand, I will guess that #2 and #3 are mostly aesthetic choices (rather nice ones, at that). #1 and #5 look like the same manga/anime girl; oddly enough, she doesn't look familiar at all, despite the vast amount of anime I've devoured during my earlier years. #4 - Jackie Kennedy? (a wiki look-up confirms this)

I had the wolf laying in the tall grass that Mader now is using. Then I switched to this one and will probably leave it.

I like #2 for the absurdity.

They're from Hell Girl (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hell_girl). I've actually never seen the series and don't watch anime. They were chosen primarily for aesthetic reasons.
All of the avatars I've used on the forum were actually made by stasis (http://intjforum.com/member.php?u=505). Although I made the majority of avatars in the gallery, I never used any I created for myself.

So do I. I'm actually terribly curious about it. What is it (other than the obvious 'girl in a fuzzy orange costume') and where did it come from? If you stumbled across it on flickr or google or something, what the hell were the search parameters? :)

Awesome. It's extremely rare for a double-digit poster to maintain an avatar-to-post ratio above 0.5.
#10's the best.

I can't stand most serious avatars, especially the dozens of serious business self portraits that are so common on this site. So I picked one of the small number that were actually playful.

Is a clearly trigger happy man really all that playful?

None of mine are on any sites, but I can easily recall them in chronological order:
Don Corleone
Sonny Corleone
Richie Aprile
Me
Jake LaMotta
Richie Aprile, again
Terry Malloy
Popeye Doyle (current)

Compared to serious self-portraits where you're staring at the camera like you want to fist fight or hate-fuck it, it is.

I had a forum-offered avatar of a peeved-looking animated fox in the rain, before the board switched things around a bit. Then I had a picture of the Enterprise from the movies in front of a nebula (my own work, combining two pictures). Now it's the Pallas cat--also a forum offering.
I miss the fox, come to think of it.

Not necessarily in order (I don't remember anyway):
http://www.intjforum.com/images/avatars/philosophers/Descartes02.jpg http://www.intjforum.com/images/avatars/philosophers/Spinoza19.jpg http://www.intjforum.com/images/avatars/space/space06.jpg http://www.intjforum.com/images/avatars/startrek/PicardAvatarOne.jpg http://i325.photobucket.com/albums/k366/ssrprotege/avatar2034_2.jpg
There was a Dostoyevsky avatar, but I couldn't find it. Then I returned to this:
http://i325.photobucket.com/albums/k366/ssrprotege/avatar2034_2.jpg
Then there is my current avatar.
