I have an overwhelming creative urge. At any given time I have to be working on something that lets me create, or I'm not happy. I used to fulfill this creative drive through writing software but I don't do that any more and it's making me crazy. I've been toying with the idea of working on a novel, and I spend time writing song parodies and such (some funny ones on To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. Is this an INTJ thing? Anyone else have the uncontrollable urge to create?

I have an urge to change the world around me so it has purpose, but that's about it. If I ever have the urge to 'create' something, there's some kind of greater purpose around it.

I would say I'm not very creative at all, just logical. Even though I think I've read somewhere that INTJs are apparently pretty creative with their logical solutions, but see it as logic rather than creativity. My response to that, is I think some people have a pretty lax definition on creativity :D I mean, how creative can you be if you're just trying to do things the best way possible?

It means you come up with and are willing to try things that haven't been tried before. A lot of people consider this creativity.

I used to sit at the piano and sing or write songs when I was feeling creative.
(I don't have a piano anymore, but I need to get one.)

The urge is there but the time is lacking

Yes. I almost always have something in progress that is in some way creative.

I have unpredictable urges of creativity...being a guitarist, my mind is never at ease. I have a hard time sleeping if a notational idea is brewing, so I usually don't sleep until I have my way with it.

Can someone be too proud of their creative abilities?

I suppose if it interferes somehow. I'm very much the same as you in this area it appears...

There is a difference between "proud" and "taking pride in".

The with one you know where your limits are and respect other peoples abilities as well. And you aren't an ass about it.

I paint with oils and I'm happy when creating. I'm also left-handed.

Many moons ago I sketched (charcoals) and painted (oils). As a child I played the violin (an embarrassment among the "cool" instruments), and later I tried at the guitar. I have done neither in 15+ years mostly because I don't take time to do it like I'd want to.

My "creativity" is spent on my car now. Being a mechanical engineer by training and temperament I find beauty in the function of machinery. So I tinker with my car incessantly.

I do. I'm not happy unless I am creating something. Computer program, painting, philosophy, dinner.......

Art has always been the main purpose in my life; I've always been doing it, ever since I was a tot. I'm not happy when I do not create. I like painting, making my meals, creating plans, etc.

my passion is integrating the thought processes of everyone i meet with my own. this can be bothersome as i often see things from so many perspectives that i cannot discriminate between them. this also makes me feel empathy for everyone esp. those that most people revile as "sick." in my mind people only disparage things that they haven't done 30 times or so

I consider myself creative, but only in certain areas.

I think I am creative in math; I have tendency to instinctively solve problems not using "traditional" methods to find short-cuts. Also, I created a program in the TI calculator to efficiently solve the cubic and quartic equations.

I am also good at making cracking jokes by incorporating my interpretations of events or scientific knowledge.

Other than that, I constantly self-doubt whether I am really creative/imaginative or not. I will say I am more insightful. I think I depend on insights when I study or read philosophy, psychology, etc.

I carry a notebook with me just about everywhere I go. It contains creative work-in-progress... most of my published papers begin as flashes of insight, but they are captured and developed in my notebooks.

For me it's constant. If i'm not productive, I am wasteful...I don't see any grey area there. I like to be creating all the time.

I must create... and create useful things. I also tried art but I don't get the same thing as when I write a program and people use it, or makes life easier. I seek practical things.

Yes, I think so. I need to feel as if I am doing something that matters or is tangible. Since I am not a scientist out making the world a better place, my creative outlet tends to be writing. Also, I have a career in which things I create can be tangibly measured. So, I agree with you.

same here... I have to have a project or two in the works, and it has to be something with a purpose behind it. Graphic design, home improvement, and cooking are common for me. It also has to be something I can expect to finish. I get restless and bored if I cant pour my energy into something creative.

I'm basically an idea-generating machine, but I'd rather direct others through the application. I'm too impatient with details and I don't like getting my hands dirty. My own application of my ideas is generally flawed.

This is actually what made me doubt that I was moderately N. I'm just not naturally creative. I have to put time and some effort into my thoughts for ideas to come.

There are times where I have to, too.

The thing is that they are often impractical or not useful at all and I just dismiss them. Repeated dismissal has numbed my creativity complex quite thoroughly. Now, when I am actually getting good at drawing and ok in writing, I do not have the chance to put down the ideas I used to have. Alas :(.

Almost all of my ideas are impractical. In fact, all of them are impractical. But I have a good time dreaming them up and then expressing them. Maybe one day, they'll become real.
