Do you cringe when your cell phone rings? Do you suffer from withdrawal when you can't check your Blackberry? Do you rush to post your vacation video to your Web site? The Pew Internet & American Life Project has developed a typology based on people's relationship to information and communications technology. Are you a Connector? A Productivity Enhancer? Take the test to find out your tech type. (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.)

My Result:

Based on your answers to the questionnaire, you most closely resemble survey respondents within the Connectors typology group. This does not mean that you necessarily fit every group characteristic.

Connectors make up 7% of the American public.

Basic Description
The Connectors' collection of information technology is used for a mix of one-to-one and one-to-many communication. They very much like how ICTs keep them in touch with family and friends and they like how ICTs let them work in community groups to which they belong. They are participants in cyberspace - many blog or have their own web pages - but not at the rate of Omnivores. They are not as sure-footed in their dealings with ICTs as Omnivores. Connectors suspect their gadgets could do more for them, and some need help in getting new technology to function properly.

Defining Characteristics
Connectors combine a sense that information technology is good for social purposes with a clear recognition that online resources are a great way to learn new things. Their cell phones have a lot of features, and they also try new things with technology; more than half have watched TV programming on a device like a laptop computer or cell phone.

Who They Are
Connectors, which make up 7% of the population, have a median age of 38, with a majority (54%) in the 30-49 age range. Ethnically, it is mostly white (72%); 16% are Black and 12% are English-speaking Hispanics. The typical Connector has been online for 9 years, which suggests they were a second-wave of late 1990s adopters. Most are women (55%) and they rate above average in educational attainment and income.

(If your test results come up with a previously undescribed type, please post the info - if you can - so we can all see)

Your Results
Based on your answers to the questionnaire, you most closely resemble survey respondents within the Omnivores typology group. This does not mean that you necessarily fit every group characteristic.

Omnivores make up 8% of the American public.

Basic Description
Members of this group use their extensive suite of technology tools to do an enormous range of things online, on the go, and with their cell phones. Omnivores are highly engaged with video online and digital content. Between blogging, maintaining their Web pages, remixing digital content, or posting their creations to their websites, they are creative participants in cyberspace.

Where do you fit?
Your Results

Based on your answers to the questionnaire, you most closely resemble survey respondents within the "Connected but Hassled" typology group. This does not mean that you necessarily fit every group characteristic.

The Connected but Hassled make up 10% of the American public.

Basic Description
The Connected but Hassled do not much appreciate the information and communications assets they have acquired - and they have acquired a lot of them. Most (80%) have a home broadband connection and nearly all have a laptop or desktop computer that enable online access. 80% have cell phones. But many of them say they suffer from information overload, and very few find the extra availability ICTs offer to be a good thing.

Defining Characteristics
Information technology is anywhere from a burden to an irrelevance for the Connected but Hassled. Although most have high-speed internet connections at home, few take advantage of applications that benefit from it - such as downloading video, music, or viewing TV shows on a home computer. Just 18% like the fact that ICTs make them more available to others - less than half the average. More than half see technology either making no difference or offering them less control over how they conduct their lives.

Who They Are
The typical member of this group is 46 years old and has been online for about 7 years. She - and 59% of this group is women - is well-educated and above average in terms of household income. The group is predominantly white (80%) and its workforce participation rate matches the national average.

I don't have a cell phone, you see.

Omnivore, LOL. And yeah, English-speaking Hispanic here. Latin-oriented websites are just too F-oriented to drag me in. :)

I was scored as Omnivore, but I'm really not a huge fan of connectivity. I'm sure it's great for other people, but I never even answer my cell phone. My friends know if they really want a call back they have to leave a message.

Lackluster Veterans make up 8% of the American public.

Basic Description
Lackluster Veterans have the necessary gadgets for the information age, such as a broadband connection, cell phone, and a digital camera. But the wealth of information and communication technology possessed by Lackluster Veterans does not translate into particularly high levels of satisfaction about gadgets' impacts on their lives. Although they seem to value internet connectivity, that is less true for cell phones.

Defining Characteristics
Lackluster Veterans do not link ICTs to better personal productivity, their ability to work with others in their community, or keeping up with family and friends. All in all, Lackluster Veterans seem content with surfing the Web or emailing others, but they do not show great inclination to stretch their technology habits to self-expression or mobile media. Very few like the extra-availability that comes with having "always on" broadband access or cell phones.

Who They Are
This group has a median age of 40 and has a lot of online experience, as the typical Lackluster Veteran has been online for about 10 years. Most of them are men - 65% - and they are well educated and comfortably financially. Some 41% are parents of a child under the age of 18.
