View Full Version : Waste

I have this weird thing against wasting things.

It goes from food, to plastic bags, to time, intelligence, and people in general.
It bugs me to no end when there's food left on my plate.
When people use plastic bags even if they already have 5 that only have one thing in it.
When people buy things they won't ever look at once they get it home.
When people throw things out that are perfectly new.
When time passes by with nothing to show for it.
When smart people don't put themselves to good use.
When people with certain talents don't use/acknowledge their talent.
... For that matter, any resource in general that is not put to use.

... the list goes on.

Is it just me or is an INTJ thing?

What do you - as an INTJ or otherwise - think of waste?

Of course it's an INTJ thing! It goes against efficiency!

In addition to your list, Rei, I have a thing against wasting space. No, I don't mean the useless people who take up our oxygen (or do i? wahaha), I mean families of 3 who have 7 room houses. Not that there's anything wrong with providing your family with what you've worked so hard for, it just seems like such a shame to have a room in your house that no one will use! There's also the costs to maintain such space. Why would you pay so much for a/c, heat, electricity, for empty space? and the furniture you have to fill it with for that matter. I don't wouldn't want my family to be cramped, but I'd make sure every inch of the house didn't go to waste. Friends tell me that they have living rooms and dining rooms "only for special occasions." I don't know... I see an untouched room, it makes me sad.

Heh, I know what you mean. *My aunt and uncle have this huuuuge house with reeeeally high ceilings, and it's just them two and a couple of miniature poodles (now THOSE are a waste of space!). *Granted, they have a couple of sons that are huge men and need a lot of space, but they are adults, so they don't live there and they rarely visit. *I can see having a slightly bigger house if you love throwing parties, but as far as rooms go, I think 1 extra room should be sufficient. *I don't know of too many people who are truly put out by having to sleep on a sofa.

As far as waste goes...how bout food packaging. *So you buy a box of crackers, right, you're buying the box, the plastic bag inside, and all of the wasted space that is occupied by air inside the box. *Blah blah blah freshness blah blah, okay, how about we just put everything in bags that zip out air to keep things fresh and sell them like that? *Oh, and fill them to the top so we're not wasting packaging by using air to make up volume.

Are careful consideration I think you are just...

Tight. *:P

But, the improving things is a T function. Most people have it to some degree....

Lol at the shopping bag thing, I laugh everytime the shop keeper asks if I want a bag when I buy one item.
Other times I dislike wasted material is when the effort level is too high e.g. Packaging waste on electrical items that are in boxes. and wrapped in plastic and have foam surrounders and rest of box is filled with those foam chips.

EXACTLY!
I know people like that too. A couple, their kids moved out but they have a house with 5 rooms, 3 living rooms, 1 dining room&kitchen. They don't even walk into those living rooms anymore because they have a TV in the dining room. And then there's those 5 rooms they don't occupy. I mean, either rent it out, or FIND A SMALLER HOUSE! Those poor rooms are lonely and just sitting there and collecting dust, wasting electricity, and just being generally scary on a stormy night!

On food packaging: I hate when those little candy things are individually packaged. I think we should get crackers in resealable plastic boxes (like tupperware). We could bring the box back and get a quarter for it... just like the milk jugs back in the good ol' days. That would solve the whole freshness+crushed crackers problem.

to part one, you do :)
and to part 2 seprate (larger) rooms for special occasions is just a way for ppl to say hay look, I'm rich and stupid cause I have a really well kept and decorated room that gets used maybe once a year, and for them to say "oooo... look at that I must be awsome!"

Ah, yes, another issue for me! I just loathe those McMansions for all the reasons you guys mention. It drives me crazy to see those big houses with their enomormous rooms, high ceilings, boring sheetrock walls, beige siding and all that crap.
The good thing is that I've successfully indoctrinated my wife against such houses! Just last year, we bought a house built in 1910. My family, her family and our friends thought we were crazy for not buying a new house.

There are decomposing corpses being wasted in the ground. We could very easily create an energy plant that transforms the gas being put off by them into energy. Why waste precious Real Estate on cemeteries, or energy on cremation?

Plus we could solve any burgeoning of our population, and energy crisis with a small genocide.

I kind of like large houses, actually. You can have different rooms to escape into if you get too tired of seeing the same thing everyday. Anyway, how can they waste energy if you don't use them?

I need the many large rooms for my books. But I wont buy one of those McMansions, I'd prefer to design and have built something original.

How about the packaging for software? An 8x10 box an inch thick to house a CD and a paper-thin manual. What a waste!

Just this weekend, I told my wife she could bury me in a plastic bag for all I cared. I actually insisted that she bury me as cheaply as possible.

I say don't even bother burying me...
Cremation + whoops I just spilt her ashes into the ocean/on the freeway/next the big tree in the front yard etc etc.

I want something far more grandiose.

Crystal Sarcophagus, filled with ethanol. Inside a temple dedicated to the memory and worship of me. Like the Taj, but better.

I hate waste, too. I am very "resourceful". and frugal. I can't help it. I'm driven. I guess it makes me feel successful. If I accomplish something but am wasteful about it, what is there to be proud of?

I must admit the idea of cremation always appealed to me, as well. I don't like the idea of feeling "required" to visit someone's grave, and then feeling guilty because I don't. But for spiritual reasons, I will be buried. Even so, I believe in the afterlife, and think it's unnecessary to have my shell take up the space of the living if I'm no longer part of that realm ;) While I don't want people to forget me the moment I croak, I don't want them to feel obligated to visit me if they want to show their respect and remembrance.

I dunno... I'd like that who ever I leave behind is not going to be dwelling over my 'lingering existance' so I'd rather they were comfortable enough to just 'scatter me to the winds' and be done with it.

Besides, whether I believe in afterlife or not. I really don't want to be lying around in a field full of other boring dead peeps when I die. I'm an adventurer at heart... it'd be nice to visit all the nooks and crannies of the world in the form of ashes ;D

I agree. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, circle of life, and so forth.

I don't know about cremation. I always fear that I'll be "not quite dead yet."
