It's that time of year for hockey fans. The time of year we all dream of a 119 year old silver trophy being raised by our favorite team. What team are you rooting for? Who do you think will advance out of the first round? Why?
Same question applies as each round passes. Who do you think will take it all?
I'm a HUGE Red Wings fan and I'm rooting for them all the way. I can't say that I think they will get past Nashville.
My thoughts...
Western Conference:
Canucks over Kings 4 - 2
Kings will make a go of it but I think they spent too much energy to make the playoffs to beat Vancouver
Blues over Sharks 4 - 1
Blues don't give up much and are one of the few teams that can throw San Jose around like a rag doll
Blackhawks over Coyotes 4 -3
Coyotes don't have enough depth over the series to match up.
Predators over Red Wings 4 - 3
As strange as it is for me to say this, I think the additions Nashville made at the deadline made them deeper than the Wings. Plus they've been good at home.
Eastern Conference:
Rangers over Senators 4-3
Ottawa is better than they are on paper but I the rangers have great goaltending (Lundquist)
Bruins over Capitols 4-1
Washington has been way too inconsistent this year for me to think they would advance past the B's
Devils over Panthers 4-1
Panthers basically overtime loss-ed their way into the playoff. There are no points for losers here.
Penguins over Flyers 4 - 3
It's a toss up. I think this will be a game and series of attrition. These guys hate each other and the team with the least injuries will survive. Pens are damned deep down the center though.

Penguins fan here, though I admit I haven't followed the NHL as closely this year as I have in the past. I think they have as good a chance to win it all as anyone though. They've had a ton of injuries this year and still have more points than any other team in the Eastern Conference except the Rangers. Now that Crosby is back I feel pretty good about their chances.

Best playoffs in professional sports. I don't really have a favorite team, though. The Oilers are the parent franchise of the AHL team in my city, so I follow them more closely than anyone else, but obviously they didn't make the playoffs. I generally hope for the Canadian teams to do well in the postseason, since they're going through a long drought right now. So go Canucks, even though they will likely choke.

I wonder about Crosby now that he has concussion issues though. I'm wondering if the physicality of the coming series will cause another one. Once you've had one, you're likely to get another and Philly is as physical as it gets.
I can't WAIT. Awesome matchups this year. The games to watch are gonna be Nash v. Det in the first round...that'll go to 7 games easily. Then you've got Philly v. Pitt right out of the gate.
It seems like (amongst my friends) the Penguins are the favorites to win, but they're going to be playing two EXTREMELY PHYSICAL rounds...they have to get through Philly and Boston to get up there and I'm not sure they can hang it. We'll probably see some serious injuries.
I'm personally a Rangers fan, they're hot but I've been burnt too many times in the late season to be overly hopeful. Technically they should have no problem against Ottawa as the Senators barely made it into the playoffs...but they have a losing record against them, 3-1 :blank:
If they can get by Ottawa, New Jersey will probably win the first round, and both of those teams will steamroll right over Tim Thomas. A NYR v. NJD would be another amazing game to see...hard to call that one, they're so evenly matched.
If Detroit makes it out of the first round, I could see them easily advancing to the finals. As long as the Penguins get knocked out, in my heart of hearts I'm hoping for a Wings v. Rangers finals :wiseguy:

I won't lie, I'd be really, REALLY happy if someone nailed Boston for us. Then again, I'd also be really happy if the Canuck's got over their grief and personal demons and could beat them on their own. Still. The two teams have different playing styles, Boston likes a way more physical game and unless the 'Nucks find a way of neutralizing that we'll be in trouble.
EDIT: As an aside.. I also really hope my team doesn't get as physically broken as we did last season. Half the team was injured and.. okay I get a bit choked up when I see my boys get hurt ;_; to me the beauty of the game is the finesse and strategy, the skill, not so much the brute strength of I-can-smash-a-player's-head-into-the-wall. I think I feel this way because I was raised on the Canucks and their playing style, but it's a bias I'm okay with having.

I agree about your analysis on the Pens / Flyers series. I don't think the team that comes out of it will go far. With the first series being as physical as it is in a very physical conference the attrition rate of players will be pretty high through the course of the playoffs.
It would be pretty nice to see an original 6 match-up in the finals. I don't think the wings will make it though. Their top two lines have been hot and cold, the power play has been atrocious all season and their PK hasn't been that great. That's not a good omen for playoff success.
I hope the Flames get their shit together for next season :(. Don't like the 'Nucks, so I'll toss my hat in for the Sens.
The Flames need to add a lot of quality parts to make any real progress. They don't have enough depth to compete. Do you think they will make a big move for Parise during the post season or do you think they will try to trade Iginla to get some high end prospect for the next couple years?

The Canucks have a real shot. I think they have to worry more about St. Louis in the west before they get to the finals. Since Hitchcock took the reins the blues have been outstanding. They allow very few goals and have enough depth and team toughness to really give anybody a tough go. Add to that Hitchcock's Cup experience (Dallas Stars - 1999) and that makes them a serious roadblock.
Mind you, that the Blues are one of our primary rivals and I have no particular love for them. That being said, I think out in the west, they are right with the Canucks as front runners to hoist the Cup. If they meet in the playoffs, I'm definitely following that series.
They really should play Schneids more, he's become such an excellent goalie. I really hope he doesn't leave the team, he deserves to be a #1 goalie but I'd miss him so much u.u;

Oooh, hard to say. I've heard rumblings that the team may be rebuilt. But, Iggy has openly said he won't have any of it, and he usually doesn't fuck around with words. If he says it, he means it. At this juncture it's hard to say. I'd really hate to see Iggy go, but the team needs some serious overhaul. I don't think they are terrible, they just lack consistancy. You can see how motivated they are when they hit the ice. Some games they fly out of the gates, other games they bumble out.
I'm eager to see how this develops.

Gotta give Cooke credit though. He really cleaned up his act this year. I hated him for so long because he was so dirty. He has dropped the dirty play while still playing chippy and being very productive. I have a lot of respect for his play this year.

Western Conference:
Canucks over Kings 4 - 2
Blues over Sharks 4 - 1
Blackhawks over Coyotes 5 -2
My second favorite team in the NHL
Red Wings over Preds 4 - 3.
Nashville is deep this year and has a lot of fucking heart, but the Wings are simply a better playoff team. (plus, I love the Wings, can't help it. I know they're the Yankees of the NHL and I'm def not a Yanks fan)
Eastern Conference:
Sens over Rangers 4-3
Because the Sens have heart...and I always root for the underdog
Bruins over Capitols 4-1
Washington has been way too inconsistent this year for me to think they would advance past the B's
Devils over Panthers 4-1
No idea don't really follow either, will agree with you here
Flyers over Pens 4 - 3
No reason for me really choosing this, but this is how I think it will play out. This will be the series to watch though. I love watching this match up.
In the end, I'm thinking it's the Nucks for the cup this year.
On another note, Seattle (where I'm from) is considering acquiring an NHL team...we are such a hockey city waiting to happen. *fervently prays to the ghost of Lord Stanley*

It's like I said, the question mark about the Pens is that having to play the Flyers puts Sid in the crosshairs. He's been batting concussion issues all season. He hasn't played many games. It's very easy to get another after you've had a couple.
If they survive this round (which I think they will) I think the toll will be too great on them to make it to the finals. This is made even worse should they get the Bruins afterwards. It won't be pretty.

The Red Wings absolutely sucked and were an embarrassment to the organization and their fans. I really hope they know how lucky they were to be in the President's Cup race midway through the season because without that great opening they would have been nowhere near close to the playoffs. That was easily the most pathetic Red Wings team I have seen in all of my 'fanhood' as a Wings fan. Holland better make some damn changes in the off season or I'm going to be pissed. This series was huge to the Red Wings because if they won then I would have believed that they got the leg up on the Ryan Suter sweepstakes but he's staying in Nashville long-term.
I have never seen worse defensive play from a playoff hockey team and then I've seen only a little worse than the offensive output that they had. It's like the old farts decided to roll over and play dead. Enjoy the golf course because you will be going there earlier next year if they keep this up.
This is why I hate being a fan of professional sports, because I know I can run a team better than 99.9% of the GM's out there. Holland was one that I didn't think I could do better than but he's slipping into that category with disaster teams like this.

Interesting aside, I went to school with Ryan Suter. He was a freshman when I was a senior. Good guy, very good U.S. system player.
Honestly I try not to get far too involved in hockey, because I feel like I have to little time, so I do what I can and just check the scores 3-2 times a week.
Rarely have time to watch the games.

I can understand Nashville beating Detroit. Nashville has been a good team for a long time, but hasn't gotten the recognition they deserve. It's hard to get a lot of press when you battle the Red Wings and Blackhawks all year, every year to get into the playoffs. Also, remember that during the trade deadline they added Kostitsyn, Gill and Gaustad. Also they got Alex Radulov back from the KHL while the wings only added Kyle Quincey.
Add to that the fact that they have been battling for first with the Wings and Blues most of the season, and you have a team that presents real problems.
New Jersey on the other hand.... has just been shitty. The Panthers barely got into the playoffs in the first place. A good share of their points the last 10 games of the regular season were from overtime losses (for which I think getting a point for is utter bullshit) even though they played well in the beginning of the season. IMO, the Panthers shouldn't have been able to hold the Devil's jock strap, much less take this to 7 games.

Stanley Cup Playoffs: Round 2
Okay, Second round starts out west on Friday night. Since the East won't be set until after this evening, we have to wait until it's over to ask about potential winners.
Who do you call to win the series in the Western Conference?
Coyotes vs. Predators
Kings vs. Blues
My picks....
Predators in 6. The "pack mentality" of the Coyotes worked against the Hawks but the Predators have a pack mentality of their own. Plus they beat a team with mediocre goaltending. I think it's safe to say that Pekka Rinne is anything but mediocre. No easy or cheap goals will be scored against this guy.
Blues in 6. Once again, the Blues are my pick to win the cup. I think it will be a good series, but the Blues have been playing playoff hockey since Hitchcock took over. They don't give two shits about line matching and will roll all three defensive pairings and all four forward lines. Add to that they have the lowest total goals against this season (165) and I think that it's lights out for the Kings.

Rangers haven't won anything since 94.
Knicks haven't won a single playoff game in 10 years.

That and the fact that Hagelin was back on the ice...he didn't tally anything, but who knows, he might be making that much of a difference.

Might simply be a case of Ottawa having to spread their defensive focus. Sometimes having that other threat (especially on a different line) makes it that much harder to shut down the other teams offense.
Who do you think wins between Florida and New Jersey tonight?

Considering the defending champs just lost in OT on home ice in a first ever 7 series that had every game decided by one goal.... I think anything is possible haha.

There is no such thing as optimism when you are a NY fan of any team other than the yankees/ somewhat giants.
Rangers haven't won anything since 94.
Knicks haven't won a single playoff game in 10 years.
Mets - Involved in Ponzi schemes.
NJ Nets - Moved to brooklyn b/c they suck too and they wanted to join the party.
Jets - Have Tim Tebow.
There was an interesting column in the Post on Sunday about a friend of the columnist who developed something he calls the Fan Satisfaction Index.
Here is the link if you didn't see it:

Using the FSI, the Mets, Nets and Jets were the 3 lowest rated NY teams in Fan Satisfaction and the Yankees got the highest score. Like I didn't know that!
That is my plan for getting into heaven. When I get to the pearly gates and St. Peter pulls out all 37 tomes listing my sins, faults, shortcomings, and most of the times I got drunk, I plan to play my trump card "I was a lifelong _ETS fan!"
I figure not only will that get me in, I'll probably get a Sky Box between the 40's.

The Devils are on the list, with a very high rating.
The inclusion didn't bother me, they played in the same building as the Nets and it was only a 9 iron from Giants Stadium.

...Who was named Willie O'Ree.
It's everywhere unfortunately. It's not as bad as it used to be but it is still there. I know people who play that grew up dealing with it and still have to deal with it even now and that's just playing league or pick up. There's also ignorance in their own communities about how "black people don't play hockey."
In a word.... pathetic.
That being said, the ignorant few shouldn't be reflected to be the hockey community in general. It isn't.

It's insanity, really. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure there are way, way more black hockey players than south/east asian hockey players. Affirmative action don't work in the NHL, if you're there it's because you've got the skill to be there.

True enough. I can only think of Brad Park (Penguins) and Devin Setoguchi (Wild). Same can be said for Indian / Arab decent. The only two I know of are Manny Malholtra and Nazem Kadri.
I simply believe it is good that the game is growing. The last thing we need is affirmative action. I put affirmative action on the same level as the forced salary cap "parity" in the league. If you can compete, you can compete. If you can't, you can't.

Rinne did make a lot of great saves. I was surprised that he let in so many after what he did to the Wings facing 30 shots or more a night and giving up practically nothing. When Phoenix put up a five spot on them my first reaction was... WTF? Now he gives up goals?

My SO has a reputation as being near-suicidal during playoff games, because a friend of ours who does photography for the city newspaper took a picture of him with the most intense expression during one of the local hockey games (and it ended up in the newspaper), so we both get texts nonstop during the OT Rangers games from friends asking if he's all right and if we need an ambulance, particularly after power plays.

Yeah they do. But even by their own admission, they didn't play well in the first period of the last two games. I'm sure that will be addressed in the next several days.
If the Rangers advance, you'll have two big market teams in the playoffs. That will be great for hockey, although after playing three long series I wonder how much they will have left in the tank.

Maybe it's me, but every time I watch a playoff series, the team that has the extra time off just starts off so bad and in some cases just never recovers.

My roommate is a Kings fan and he is pumped as hell. They earned it though they played out of their minds this postseason. My roommate told me that he hoped my Sharks got them ready to play after beating the Kings the last two games of the regular season and preventing the Kings from winning the Pacific Division. They did just that, 16-4 in the postseason (10-1 on the road) and had scoring to go along with their great defensive and penalty kill play. The Devils played hard but were to small to deal with the Kings mix of size and speed. Like thehammer, I feel for Marty, a future HOF who is still playing great at 40 years of age.
