View Full Version : Phototyping

I've been toying around with phototyping and provided people list their actual personality type I think I go pretty well.

Howto Phototype (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. t=15)
Collection of photo typed people for reference (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.).

Anyone else played around with the idea? It's interesting that most of the people who do it at similar minds are INTJ's.

*guilty* I was pegged pretty fast as an INTJ.

If anyone thinks they can tell a type by physical looks then they are just plain stupid.

You could draw some inference from the clothing and accessories they have.

If you want to type someone quickly then oblique questions based on the following lists will help yopu rapidly assimilate a type.

Is phototyping an actual phychological term? Seems more like NLP to me..?!?

Anyway, judging merely a static picture is very difficult. Its much easier when people are actually "live and kicking". The way they look, breath, move their eyes, walk (and the list goes on and on) are all subconscious signals they are giving off. When interpreted correctly it can tell you a lot about that person. But even then there is no absolute norm for these things, every person is wired differently, just most are wired similarly.

qwerty
11-10-2007, 05:00 PM
I'm pretty sure it's not a real study area and I know that static photos aren't the best way to do it.
The exercise is finding observable patterns.

So something the guys at similar minds tend to do is look at eyes and focus points. Another thing you start looking at is body positioning - is the person hunched over. You begin looking for smile wrinkles etc.

It's just another basic profiling hobby.

I like the challenge of trying to judge someone's type by their looks, but I disagree with many of the typings on that page.

For example, I don't agree that Whoopee Goldberg is an ESFP - mostly because SPs care about their image - what they look like - she has had her hair that way for 20 years. And she's kind of frumpy sometimes. Besides, she's a brainiac.

Also, although Princess Diana related to the INFP Healer description, my INFP sister is positive Lady Di was not an INFP. She was definitely an S.

qwerty
11-11-2007, 04:33 AM
That's fine if you disagree with them. I have my doubts as well and I'm not using specific pictures. Instead when I do it I'm looking for likeness traits.

Ok so as an example I have attached 3 photo's they're not anyone I know I just found them online and by the looks of them they have been through a typing test.

** ALL three are the same type **

All similar in appearance (if you guys want to play I'll post more). Can you pick them?

11-11-2007, 11:14 AM
Hmm, I dunno. This sounds a lot like that old endomorph-ectomorph shindig. I don't think you can really judge people's personalities by their unvarnished appearance any more than you can judge it by their blood type. The varnish, however, might be telling.

Ijz

My guess,

Picture 1: ENFJ
Picture 2: INFP
Picture 3: ESFJ

But I found it really difficult. What are your guesses qwerty?

qwerty
11-11-2007, 05:02 PM
I know what they are already, I took pre-typed people.

Averaging out your guesses as they are all the same type:
ENFJ --- wrong but close

I'll hint that ENxx is correct.

Remaining choices out of
ENFP
ENTJ
ENTP

Ijz
11-11-2007, 10:39 PM
in that case it must be ENFP

EDIT
My breakdown of the guys from above
Extroverted
The two with their eyes open are focused on the interviewer. All three appear to be actively engaging someone to the right of the camera.

2 of them are adopting power stances (first and last) and the middle one appears to be fidgeting.

These are all extroverted qualities.

iNtuitive

Each person appears to have their own personality, they are not conforming to a traditional expression (this is slightly swayed by the E).
The two with open eyes appear to be focused on a single point

Thinking

Upwards slanting eyes. (opposite of similar minds description for feelers)
Mixed with their iNtuition reason but they appear focused on the interview rather than the room around them.

Perceiving

Rounded jaws (except the last one).
All extremely casual in clothing.
They have a p look about them (my own intuition tells me this).

END EDIT

Bom bom -- the correct Answer is ENTP..

Ok once again I'm going to post a bunch of pictures of people who have typed themselves. Once again they will all be the same type.

There are five pictures this time because I'm using multiple genders and nationalities so that makes it harder (plus this type is apparently bad at putting their images online for people to use - shame on them!).

I dunno. I'm kinda skeptical. But then sometimes I do try to guess what people do by how they look - not from a photo - but in real life. There are some people that just fit their job type really well. Others of course not so much. Aren't so distinctive. But the some that are - you kind of wonder why they seem to fit their job so well. Why you have that look in mind for that job. In this case it's type but kind of a similar idea.

Pure guess ISFP I honestly have no idea. I can't type people too well en vivo so to speak.

This would be an awesome way to go about it if you could get her to take the test after the guesses come in.

I'll guess... eSTJ! Maybe ISTJ.

IxFx is correct... until you're sure about the n/s and the p/j combination I'll leave them a mystery

I'll go with ISFJ, because they seem less likely to post their pictures online than other IxFx types. :p

Thegnat and IjzerenHein are correct-a-mundo. :)

I'll do a break down of them later. As for the secretary lets try:

ESFP - Most secretaries are some combination of sf

Extroverted - She appears to be looking out of the picture.
Sensing - She appears to look traditional, she doesn't jump out at me as being different.
Feeling - Rounded eye brows and centric eyes when looking up.
Perceiving - her shirt hasn't been ironed.

Also comparing to the photopage she looked allot like both the ESFP's and the ENTJs' (big contradiction in the photo's)

I don't know it's like watching who wants to be a millionaire on tv compared to people in real life. I'm comfortable with the answer in my head but there's a good chance I'll screw it up.

qwerty

lol apparently SF's in general don't question themselves, and either don't understand it or don't care about it.

----
Break down of the ISFP's

All introverted - all of the photo's have been cut and cropped (there's no background) and the chick with the cat is hunched in protecting herself. I don't see them just jumping out of the page.
Sensing - All are posing in similar manners, are traditional posed. There eyes are in the moment.
Feeling - None of them appear as thinkers, they have centric eye positions, they have that touchy feeling look about them.
Perceiving - I can't imagine any of them being big planners. Lots of rounded jaws (more of a feminine thing here)

I think you're spot on.

She's definitely an ExFx, this was apparent from the start. As for the N/S, based on how she spoke and dressed she has to be an S, no doubt, it was just too common. Also she doesn't seem to be very organized or decisive, but she is quite spontaneous so I would have to go for the N. Hence, also my guess is ESFP.

If anyone wants me to ask her some questions just let me know, I'll just try to slip them in a casual conversation :)

I have to agree with Henry. To me picking someones type based on eyes is like picking someones types going by their blood type as I don't see how there could be any correlation.

However, I do think you can pick someones type going by the persona they chose when acting as themselves infront of a camera, although its a very fine line.

Well the thing is... there's a theory that one's personality affects how they physically present themselves.

Technically, it'd be easier if you had the whole person. Posture and everything.

I don't know, I wouldn't depend on this to type someone, but it's a cool experiment.

I'm always confused about what people have against feminists, anyway. We're not femi-nazis. We just want to be able to be doctors or lawyers if we want. And to be able to vote. Why is that so objectionable?
