What is your reason for taking photographs?
Is it visual satisfaction (the beauty of a leaf)?
Emotional stabilization (the photo of a long past loved one)?
Or is it something more intimate in yourself? Something subconscious, even?

I was wondering this a while back, and I think I posted it in another forum of scientists a long long while ago, but..
Say, for instance, one day I spoke with one of my photography-classmates, and her reasoning as to why she took photographs was because she wanted "to remember, to never forget" the thing she photographed..

In that instance I kind of took interest in the reasons we, as humans, need to remember things. And maybe the reason that the still camera was created was solely to remember things in more detail than before (paintings).

I take digital photographs of astronomical objects using my telescopes. I love astronomy, and I love the mathematical aspects of image processing... it all fits!

Here is a picture of me and my large telescope superimposed on a picture I took of the Orion Nebula (scroll down to #117). It is a true-color image... violet color indicates the presence of ionized Hydrogen:

Weird. This topic actually made me think of why I like photography: "Why do I like taking pictures?"

Not sure. I'll think on that though.

Because I like looking at pictures to look back on old times. Sometimes looking into the past is fun. I do it also to avoid having my picture taken--if I have the camera people can't use it on me.

These are some preliminary efforts I've had at creating a prayer background for a prayer I wanted to hang on my kids' bedroom wall. The photos are my own. I may change the fonts and colours, not sure. Any feedback is welcome.

I like to make Photos too. Last Time I went outside for Motives I went to the Graveyard mainly (Many cool Stuff to see, since it is REALLY big and has many Trees. Also all the Crows etc), the Rhine and also around in the City. I have a good Eye for nice Shots and I just LOVE Graphics. I feel much Joy when working with them. =3

Great question...One I believe that gets to the heart of what it means to be human. I think you answered it for me in your question. I believe that photographs are memories and memories are one of the only things we can keep or pass on. The only things a parent can give to a child are memories and values (and perhaps memories are what create values in us...I'm not a psychologist so can't say...). If you think back what do you remember?

An appeciation of art and beauty is also something that defines us as human (think early cave drawings as an expression of this).

I never really reflected on this before, but I can sit for long hours looking at old photographs. I guess I just find the whole process rewarding - the thrill of taking just the right picture and then being able to relax and enjoy it afterwards. So, I'd say it's a combination of visual satisfaction and emotional stabilization.

I enjoy working In the darkroom with b&w photography, or using photoshop with digital photos. For me it's about creating essence, everyone knows that the scenes in any photo exist. Your job as a photographer is to polish the photo, like a theatre director. Make it the most influential that you can. I enjoy altering photos, It shows how fragile reality is, when people let themselves be convinced so easily. But I just do it for fun, not to trick anyone.
