In light of the great George Carlin's passing, I thought I might ask what everyone's favorite comedian is/was. I think George Carlin was one of the funniest and most insightful comedians of the 20th Century, if not all time. His combination of intelligent, insightful wit and stage presence always appealed to me. Not to mention the complete disregard for social mores and subtleties that we have all become habit to! So who makes you laugh? Who are your favorite comedians?

There have been so many that started out great and then petered out, but some of my favorites are the ones who die young, maybe they just burned to bright to stay here for a long time. So I'll list a few dead and a few live ones.

Dead: Sam Kinneson - His grasp on humor was original a bit vulgar but not overbearing his choices for subject matter were things that most people have fleeting thoughts about, all he did was linger on the subject.

Dead: John Candy - From Second City to Saturday Night Live to Most of his movies, he was a great situation comedian, able to draw your sympathy and still allow you to enjoy a laugh at his expense. I miss his work.

Alive: John Pinette - Hands down the best comedian on food related topics, he has ventured out into other topics but I enjoy everything he does most when he stays with the food topics.

Alive: Robin Williams - I have enjoyed all his stand up and most of his movies. He shines the most with an unscripted interview, his mind is so quick and witty he can find the humor in most anything.

Bill Cosby. His humor is drawn from experiences common to all people... and he doesn't need the crutches of vulgarity and sexual innuendo that lesser talents must use to prop themselves up.

Cosby is great. But I must say something about the statements afterward: What about a comedian who can do both vulgar and subtle humor? George Carlin does both. He's also written three books. I suggest EVERYONE read them.

Another Cosby fan here, it has been so long since I've heard him do comedy. The lack of vulgarity is also one of the things I like about George Lopez, his act is pretty clean.

Colbert is awesome, I love the Report. (and the Daily Show for that matter)

My favourite comedian has to be Bill Hicks. I love the guy.

I've seen a bit of Carlin, they seem kinda similar so I'd recommend checking out Hicks if you're a Carlin fan. :)

Is it just me or do more modern comedians rely too much on dirty humor? (I hate Will Ferrell)

Peter Sellers, he was extremely versatile and witty.

Bill Murray (the older and mature version), he has one of the best dry sense of humor in the business

Ricky Gervais
