View Full Version : Any musicians in the house?

I am curious how many INTJ's are musicians?
Listening to music does not require personal expression of thoughts and feelings aside from deciding what to listen to. But, creating music, that does require interpretation and expression of feelings--either your own or as described in the music by the composer. To me, it would seems odd to be an INTJ and a musician, but I am one. Anyone else into creating and playing music?

Sign me up for the musical INTJ's. But then, I have flitted between other types so I may not be the best example.

Guitar. Mainly metal. I'd love to learn to play the piano and violin, maybe pipe organ too (just for Toccata and Fugue).

Bass baby, Oh yeah
Grew up with piano, violin and cello though.
I don't think there's anything odd about an INTJ musician, in fact I think it's pretty common.

Used to be with piano, now the violinist, used to aspire to become a conductor.
And I was Principal Conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic in my dream.

Flute, sax, piano.
Another flutist! Sweet. I have played the flute for 15 years. If ever a male INTJ wanted to further alienate themselves from their peers in school and open themselves up for more ridicule, then the flute is the instrument for them to play! I do not know why that it was always seen as a girls instrument in my school. Most of the greatest professional flute players are males. What type of music do you like to play?

I personally use music as a way to get in touch with and express my Fi. What I can never say in words just flows right out in music.
I play alto and tenor saxophone.

I used to play bass professionally (over 500 gigs and a couple of recordings), now I hardly touch them.:embarassed:
In highschool I took AP music theory and composed a few short works for class.
It is strange right now since I miss making music but I don't want to get back into it.

:( why not?
When I went to college I didn't have time to play gigs anymore, and playing by myself was pretty boring. Honestly, I was pretty bored with the gigs as well, but it paid fairly well and wasn't unpleasant. I just got busy with other things. I tend to be very devoted to a hobby for about 5 years, then get sick of it and move on to something else.

I'm not an INTJ, nor a musician, but my ENTj brother is. He actually just finished his first EP (look it up on iTunes ;)) and has a CD release show on Tuesday as well as a concert in front of a projected 3,000 people on the 9th. He is very talented. He has all the creativity and brainstorming power of an ENTP and the drive of a J to get things done.
You can listen to previews of (and buy) his music on iTunes (his band name is The Standalone). The EP One is done entirely by him (he has, up 'til now worked on his own, so everything you here on the album is going to be him), and he has a band for shows. Guy's got talent.

That's awesome, good for your brother. I'm going to have to check out some of his music.
At any rate, I started my own solo project very recently... you can visit the thread that is just a few below this follow the link, and hear some of the tunes!:

isn't there a difference between a 'musician' and a 'player'?
anyways, i'm an accordian player... i've had my accordian for about 4 years... oh, and its awesome... been some time since i touched it last (cause more project compile onto one another)
oh, and i sing... i am critical of my own work so i don't sing those in front of others... but i do sing johnny cash and a few other lower toned songs pretty well... (i am an elvis fan too :)
in high school, i played the trumpet, baratone, and percussion... i love the sound of the french horn also...
I used to be a musician, I've played (to a decent standard) Viola, Tuba, Trombone, Bassoon, and Bass Guitar. I've also made a few songs in my spare time.
Edit:
Actually, I am a musician but I've been kicked out of marching band(Told the band director he wasn't a good director) and now only focus on Viola.

I'm a guitarist. I think taking up an instrument can be very balancing for an INTJ. It's certainly allowed me to express a side of myself that I can't otherwise express. It's one area where I can let go of logic and rationality and just *gasp* feel. :stunned:

I play guitar and piano, and will pick up bass and cello soon. I don't find it odd at all. It's been one of the few emotional outlets in my life, along with art, and it's been very helpful in balancing me. It's actually a very healthy thing to do as an NT.

Flutist over here.
I pick guitar and planning to learn harp and banjo. Playing music feels so great to me. It's like pouring fresh water over my face. I think an INTJ has quite good prerequisites in order to become a good musician. Particularly the determination we possess helps a lot, since learning to play an instrument takes plenty of work. However we (I) play mostly for our own enjoyment, rather than targeting an audience which might not make very good performers out of us.
Atm, I play Bass Trombone for Jazz Band (Trying out for all-region and all state, which I think i'll make) Viola because I just 'needed' to play a string instrument (I love it to) and keyboard. I also have a bass but I don't play it much now after I fixed it

I've been playing the guitar for around 12 years or so. Played Tuba in high school (only my soph and senior years, they just asked me and I said yah). I'm learning to play the viola, right now.

i am VERY into music. i play violin & piano myself & the timpani a lil, but i deeply wish i could play quads (tenor drums).
i love playing my violin to radiohead. probably my favorite thing to do musically.
update: Meh, I've pretty much shelved the Viola, Keyboard, and trumpet and have been focusing on my trombone and bass guitar (soon to upgrade to an actual guitar because lets face it, as many cool bass tabs you can find it, there is a ton of regular guitar ones that are much better)

This kind of thing fell victim to the family and church/school thing. I took a few piano lessons as a kid but didn't want to play hymns or for the church. In school, all we ever did were those crappy recorders. If rock wasn't "devil music", I might have tried electric guitar, but now I'll have to wait for my midlife crisis it seems.
As far as what school music class was actually like google Patch the Pirate if you dare.
I play violin, piano, and can pick up any instrument and play twinkle twinkle little star if you give me 1 minute to figure out the instrument!

Well, I'm a musician - there's a lot of T music out there. Consider Haydn, who was a silly nerd - consider Stravinsky - and, in more recent examples, consider Tom Lehrer. There's an NT.
I play euphonium and am studying composition and conducting in the wind-ensemble context. Of course, I over-analyze my work and it tends to be a little scholarly, but if music is to be about personal expression it should express all the contradictory aspects of one's character.
There's no act of wizardry and systems organization as fun for me as conducting a large ensemble. It's almost easier to communicate with them through that than through normal language (which is a struggle for us all sometimes, I'd be willing to bet).
Oh, and I play tinwhistle, a little bagpipes, and build my own didgeridoos. and Melodica. I spent weekends this summer busking with some friends downtown in my city... fun, but there aren't a lot of pedestrians where I live.
Great opportunity for observational studies in the human condition!

Guitar, played Saxamaphone, currently learning organ.
Is there anything that better lends itself to a "mastermind" than learning to master technique, tone, style etc etc than music? Not to mention it seems to be for me at the least the only way for me to accurately express my feelings, should I have them...You can also play music all by your lonesome. And typically when you do get together in groups you get to figure out what's working and what's not and fix it and make everything sound better!
Is it really any surprise then that we here love music?

Another violinist. Mostly with bands, doing my own fills etc. Also sing, some piano. used to be a huge part of my life, now it's taken a sideline to school. But it's a huge relief, playing or hearing music. Really just gets down to emotion and impulse. Very freeing.

I play piano. My mother said when I mastered the piano I could learn another instrument, but I suppose I never wanted to do it that badly. I rather fancy the cello in my fantasies though. I can also sing when necessary and sometimes when not.

Bass, Piano, and computer composition. I'm actually aspiring to be an underground political rapper right now. I don't have much background in rap, but I am figuring it out quickly. I don't have anything recorded yet, but I should soon hopefully. I play bass in a progressive metal band. I only play original stuff, I've never learned other people's songs. Except when I was in band in high school. I played saxophone back then, I'm still pretty good at it.

Me oh me oh me and I think I have an obsession with creating it sometimes. I like to create intricate, autistic patterns that 'normal' people don't even care about, but in some way I create my very own universe with it.
I have always loved to sing as a child, and when I became a teenager I played in a rock band, guitar and screaming. I learned in my adolescence, that many a heart can be wooed with the talent to create music. It's romantic ahhh yeaah ok
So I have played a bit of keyboard too, but at present I indulge more so in composition and production. I never had the patience to truly get into theory or learning shit, but... I have always seemed to have a knack with it, so I would say.

Guitar, drums, ukelele, harmonica. In fact any instrument I can get my hands on, I'll enjoy trying to play.
One of my main aims is to get a grand piano when I buy a house, and teach myself how to play it.
My auntie inherited a steinway baby grand a year or two back, and wanted £500 for it (bargain). I just didn't have anywhere to put it though, so had to let it pass. How annoying!

I mostly play my guitars, but I also can do drums, bass, harmonica, ukulele, keyboards, banjo, and of course, the spoons. Very few instruments don't make me think, "Man, I want to learn to play that."
Piano and trumpet. I'm the only female trumpet player in the high school band.

Voice, Piano, & Recorder (I know it sounds stupid, but I've actually accompanied choirs on recorder, so I count it even though everyone learns it in school)
I went to college on Voice scholarships and studied both voice and piano in college...until I dropped my music major b/c of a falling out with the department. My rationale was that if I ever found a way to sing for a living I didn't want that music department to get any credit for it.

Flute, Piano, Piccolo. In a Symphony Orchestra. Doing Dip for Piano. Played in Sydney Opera House. I would like very much to play violin, but I've got piano Licentiate planned right after this exam, so I wouldn't have time. I think I can sing; I do so in my private time, but never in front of an audience.

I'm a semi-professional trombone player who can double on euphonium and also play tuba and trumpet fairly decently...I can also play guitar, bass, banjo, harmonica, organ, violin, and accordion.
I also give private trombone lessons, do arranging work, dabble in composition, and work as a music and visual instructor for a local high school marching band.

Guitar, bass, a little keys and even these days singing (well no one else was going to do it and filling the gaps does seem to be an INTJ trait).
There's something rather nice about stopping the constant thoughts and analysis and just thrashing the hell out of a guitar plugged in to a nice loud valve amp.

Guitar, bass, keys, some percussion.
I pretty much am some kind of modern bard as I compose, sing and write the lyrics to my songs. Also do some occasional electronic production/mixing here and there.
I'd like to learn how to play the cello and the flute sometime. Hope I'll make it. :)

Don't know if anyone mentioned it, but dealing with music does not necessarily involve emotions. Much of 20th century classical music had eschewed emotions (starting with Stravinsky). Music as expression of emotion is a 19th century concept that has lingered in pop music and popular, often uneducated mentality.
