Qualitative Top Five
This is what I would select myself; the most authentic and/or moving pieces within what I would call my favorite genres of music. You won't like it.

5. Atrax Morgue - Living Dead (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.)
4. Steel Hook Prosthesis - The Excruciation Sequence (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.)

2. Prurient - Cocaine Death (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.)
1. Black Boned Angel - Supereclipse II (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.)

Quantitative Top Five
This is what I have played the most by count over the past few years, according to last.fm. Two tracks bumped (1 and 6) because I could not find them streaming anywhere. No overlap. You might like it.

5. Nový Svět – Souvenir de Kashmir (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.)
4. Haus Arafna – Blood (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.)
3. Unto Ashes – Convivio / Canzoni (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.) (partial sample only)
2. Doseone – Civilization (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.)
1. Death in June – The Mourner's Bench (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.)

Both methods of ranking have advantages and disadvantages and I'm not sure which is more meaningful a measure anymore. A good excuse to list ten tracks instead of five.

Yes. But even then Lou Reed's work was nothing new. To understand where these artists are coming from, we must return to the Futurist movement of the early 1900s. One highly influential Mr. Russolo will explain (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.). With regard to the transgressive character of the found sounds and elements, the sampling which dominates these contemporary genres, Dada has certainly been influential as well.

This is all very stuffy and proper, I assure you. The taste can be acquired.

Certainly, I very much have an appreciation for the idea of enjoying sounds simply for their own sake, to listen with positively childish pleasure à la John Cage (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.), but I will always love the über-melodic pop of the Beach Boys, the sublime counterpoint of Bach, et al. I try to enjoy a wide range of sounds without being limited to convention, but... sometimes when I chance upon a work that is purely 'noise', I just get bored (albeit, recognizing an actual 'idea' behind such a work will certainly abate the boredom for me). I blame rapacious environmental conditioning.

Oh, and I cannot come up with a top 5.

People in the anti-Satie camp. Those who regard Górecki's third as training wheel music for zinfandel-tilting yuppies. Diehard baroque drones. Proud owners of the entire Rush discography. And Estonians, apparently.

sometimes when I come across a work that is purely 'noise', I just get bored. I blame rapacious environmental conditioning.
I find that I am bored by noise that seems intended to be as random or free-form or wild as possible. For example, I have never been able to appreciate the Japanese noise art and it does seem like a cultural disconnect. Use of noise as a more precise instrument (paradoxically!), on the other hand, is something else in my opinion. It does often require active listening though, and it is perhaps more readily boring than something with a hook if the artist is mediocre.

Eh, I had a couple of intelligently written paragraphs to post, but decided to scrap them. I enjoyed the article, but I felt like it was just a verbose way to say, "go study Ohm's Acoustic Law". At any rate, it's a musical movement that few are good at which makes it all the more interesting to me. I can see how someone with a lot of electronica knowledge would eventually be attracted to this style.

I've actually rather enjoyed Black Boned Angel - Supereclipse II upon repeat listening. You start to hear the hooks after a while. But it's still too relentlessly dissonant for me to seek out.
