Well, would you want one?
Suppose you had a package of 50, how would you use it?
I mean a type of pill which allows you to keep your common sense and basic rational thinking. But it stops making you think too much. Like 70% less rational thinking.

No. As much as I hate "overthinking", the alternative scares me. Would I even be a human being if I took this pill?

I already am in my area-of-living. I enjoy my own quirks and short comings, they make me feel human and connected to the life I lead. Why would I give up my humanity for convenience?

There are more natural and active ways to control/stop thinking, like meditation, physical activity, etc. I hate drugging myself for no good reason.

My answer is no. I love thinking and analyzing things. It's an incredible gift when used right. What I would like to do is to be able to better control my train of thought so that it can be more productive. For example, away from pessimistic thoughts that consume you. Apart from that, it does not bother me at all. I don't want a pill that will turn me into a robot.

What happens if I take two or all of them at once (by crushing them into a powder)?
I might use it if I ever get in trouble and get strapped to a lie detector. I'll probably sell it.

Opiates and benzos slow you down and put you to sleep, but then there is addiction and OD possibilities and sideeffects... they're not my thing though.

+1. I want to sleep and be up early with full concentration capabilities, rather then lie awake, to tired to have thoughts of acceptable complexity.

I would try it, but I feel like I can get the same effects from meditation or alcohol. Sometimes the thoughts just don't stop. Yes, I do enjoy being me, and I love the fact that I'm constantly analyzing and thinking, but there comes a time when I'm too overburdened.
However, the more I think about it, maybe this would be a healthier way to control thought, considering that some people resort to heavy drug use or alcoholism.

My point, exactly. I like being me, but I also want to get some decent rest once in a while! ;)

I kind of like the free flow of it all, a pill could stifle creative content for me, or maybe enhance it

I don't have a problem with racing thoughts or sleep. I think about things all the time but I enjoy it. Physical activity, especially sports where you have to react quickly like racquetball, keeps me from getting wrapped up in my own thoughts.

I would definitely try it, being able to go through a class or even a work shift without over thinking some stupid situation that happened earlier that week would be nice.

If I had 50 of them, I would flush 49 down the toilet and flush the last one down another toilet.
I think controlling your thoughts is possible and comes with time.

Get drunk or get really stoned.
Getting drunk does help but getting high does the complete opposite my mind races at warp speed, and I am way to over aware of everything. All the things I do, all the things I say and how I act and others around me. I become extremely analytical which causes me to over think. Anyone else?

Eat some food? I can't even watch a movie when I'm stoned with some good eats because I get distracted by the amazing taste. And worrying about how I'm acting and stuff, I'm always in a comfortable environment so I don't have that problem.

I never have the urge to eat. EVER. Regardless of how much I smoke I never eat a thing. I can't even imagine something I would rather eat than whatever is being offered. My problem with your response is that your implying that I am not in a comfortable environment when usually I am extremely comfortable in the same situation

And what part of "allows you to keep your common sense and basic rational thinking are you failing to understand??!?!?

What elTee13 says guys. It's not about getting drunk, high and whatnot.
I'll reply later providing a goal and what I expect or hope for after taking such a pill.

It's a tough one but yes. Sometimes thinking can be counter productive. Sometimes I want to just escape my mind and have fun.

They already have this, its called an SSRI.
I tried the generic prozac, and when it wasnt making me shit my guts out, it was quite nice. Found out I had to ween myself onto them, as they are the same chemical that makes you have bowel movements. Apparently it is produced in the lower part of the brain as well, usually anyways.
If you take too much, or take it with caffeine, it makes you super jittery and feel like you are gonna freak out. If you ween yourself onto it, you feel confident, and you dont desire to think.
Perhaps this is why happy people tend to be inept.

No, that's damn scary. Some of my best insights come late at night, I do not mind it.
For when I do need be able to fall asleep and work the next day, I resort to meditation. It's absolutely amazing when you get the hang of it.

Lol, you say that as if everything else should be tried before the one activity that's principally dedicated to relieving the symptoms described in this thread.!

I promised to tell you why I ask this question.
I feel the distance between me and the rest of the society is too large. The society isn't willing to narrow the gap I feel. I'm willing to do that. Because I like peeps and would like to interact more with them. I wonder if a wonder pill would be a nice approach now and then. Just for a few hours a day or something.
I like people and would like to be closer to them. But wouldn't such a pill demeaning? Questions, questions.

My migraine pills do that to me. Maybe it`s partly due to the stark contrast between the migraine phase and waking up suddenly pain free, but I always feel weird for the rest of the day/the next day after taking it. It`s like all my deeper thoughts/feelings/creativity are hidden behind a curtain, so although I can partly see their outlines, I can`t reach trough to them. It`s like you suddenly have the depth of a puddle, where normaly you are a lake. It`s not particularly enjoyable or a relief (apart from the migraine pain being gone), but that might not be the kind of "thought stopping pill" the OP was thinking of.
btw, I tried doing a medium level sudoku the other day in mentioned state. It took me around an hour. My mind just couldn`t seem to make the leaps of thought/make the connections it usually would. Frustrating.

When I heard the "70% less rational" thing, I figured he was talking about Estrogen. But that was ruled out when he added that you would "keep your common sense and basic rational thinking"...

I would take all 50 at once. Then I could experience what it's like to be a piece of furniture for a day or so.
