How many brave souls do we have? I know of a few people but most of the time I find myself wondering... is that the person or someone else they want to represent themselves with?

Ok my avatar is definitely not me. But in my defense. I am a computer retard (very unINTJ). I don't know how to post pictures in threads, don't have a digital camera (and probably never will), don't chat/aim and dont know how, don't know how to make a website, don't know any computer languages, have never played a computer roll playing game, have never taken my computer apart, don't play any kind of video games, this is the first forum I have ever posted in etc, etc.
Luckily, I am a quick learner and as soon as I figure this game out, I will show my lovely face.

Mine is based on a photo of me, but I wouldn't say that I look too much like that. Of course, I'd probably say that about an actual photo of me, too.

I don't think that. (I think you look like Diane Keaton, but that isn't really relevant.) The fact that you are laughing is enough to make it a good opportunity.
The art of the Joker makeup is making a convincing mimicry out of someone who looks nothing like Heath Ledger.

More docile than Clint Eastwood, I suppose; is that what you meant to compare it to?
i like it due to the color and depth. and i manage not to make a goofy face in it, which is my natural response to cameras or photographs :P
in regards to your photo - in comparison with your user name, and many many posts on this board which are always on-topic. i suppose i am analogizing a soft, round, non-imposing face with that of a soft-spoken, non-confrontational, limp-wristed male. you seem like none of these from your posts ;) interesting.

Ah, reflex avoidance. I too suffer from a tendency to plaster on a forced smile for photographs; I look most normal when I'm the one taking the picture, with no one standing there telling to look a certain way.

Oh, I see what you meant. Just so you know, I probably look friendlier in my avatar than I normally do IRL (I refer you to my more realistic portrayal in the Member Pictures thread). Nevertheless, perhaps I can establish a new standard for face typing. ;)

Just you and me, I think. Mine can be verified by going to http://atheists.meetup.com/686/, which is run by me, with a picture of me. I can also post something on rudyhenkel.livejournal.com verifying my identity here, if anyone wants me to. I am also on facebook.

I looked toward the initial reaction to most of someone in a gas mask. I would expect surprise and then fear. Is there something around me that maybe I can't see that's toxic? The panes of glass over the eyes are reflective, maybe someone will see something different about themselves when looking in the panes? It is also a shield for me to be protected from the rest of the world. It might be bulky and awkward (perhaps introversion) but it works, I stay alive.
I won't go on, but clearly my avatar isn't me, but it's often how I feel. It worked out well.

Indeed; what other picture could capture our magnificence? ;D
I don't think it defeats the purpose of an avatar, though. The function of an avatar, in my mind, is to be an image that one can visually associate with a poster in order to better recognize their presence in a thread. Photographs of oneself serve this purpose very well.

Plus, it is nice to actually see who you are talking to. If someone does not display a photo of themselves, I always visualize that I am talking to a single brick [person] amongst a giant wall of bricks [forum], and some are more decorated than others... which signifies some individuality.
