View Full Version : Odd Food Combinations

My favorite odd food combo is spaghetti and banana.

I'll cook the spaghetti normally and use a regular sauce, maybe add meatballs, etc. While the spaghetti is still hot I'll cut up a banana and toss in the pieces. Delicious.

Anybody else have any strange combos to add?

My mom used to make chili and throw some peas on top before serving. Not bad actually.

Peanut butter and pickle relish make a good sandwich filling.

I'll have to try spaghetti and banana. It sounds good.

I'll come back with a list of my own when I have more time. My friends think that if I ever get pregnant I'll crave normal food. I was notorious for my concoctions in the college cafeteria.

I don't consider too strange, but I love chocolate chip cookies topped with cold, sharp cheddar cheese. Graham crackers will do well if no cookies are available.

Something I would consider strange is a couple of people I know love twinkie dogs. Apparently this is a hotdog that uses a twinkie for a bun that you top with cheez whiz and dunk in milk. I have no clue who came up with this concept.

Liver and honey.

The honey cuts the bitter taste of the liver nicely. It's something I grew up with so I wouldn't expect anyone else to understand it.

I have a weird habit of eating anyhing and everthing with basalmic vinegar. Tortilla chips, any kind of bread, spaghetti, strawberries, popcorn, sweet potatoes, you name it.

Ice cream on pizza: a delicacy. Preferably vanilla and supreme or some other multi-topping variety.

My daughter thought I was really strange for making this sandwich:

2 slices whole grain bread, toasted
Natural peanut butter
Spicy brown mustard
Sliced onion
Turkey breast
Salt/pepper

until she tried it. Then she discovered how good it was!

Not really that strange ... but i get some strange looks once people pick up on what I'm doing ...

I dunk my grilled cheese sandwiches in ketchup.

Yummy.

Anchovies on just about anything:cheesy:

Eggs over easy on peanut butter toast topped with Worcestershire sauce(which now that I think about contains anchovies so...)

*gag* That's possibly the most disgusting thing I've ever read.

You've probably heard of mixing mayo and ketchup but pour in some lemonade and worcestershire sauce and nuke it in the microwave and you've got a great new spread for a burger or dip for the fries.

Another simple one no one thinks of that my brother came up with is dipping vanilla wafers in water.

An amazing shake in my opinion is chocolate ice cream with Mountain Dew. Everyone else thinks it's weird, but I just say they're missing out.

My most well received sauce creation is ranch 57 - ranch salad dressing with just the right amount of Heinz 57 mixed in.

I loved eating foods that require dipping and come up with lots of interesting combos that way -- like eating ice cream with potato chips. I'll have to give BeerySwine's ice cream on pizza idea a try.

Chicken crunchy bits in fried rice with chunky peanut butter and sometimes curry stirred in. Maybe throw some toasted sesamie seeds in for good measure. I love it, my wife gags at the smell.

Crunchy peanut butter wrappes in a tortilla with tony chachere's cajun seasoning on it. (yeah I like crunchy peanut butter on most everything).

2 bell peppers cut into chunks, 1 onion cut into large chunks, diced tomato, skillet fried in red wine vinegar with some garlic and touch of sugar for seasoning. Looks vile. Tastes great. Comes out vile again.

Ketchup + anything usually equals a happy mouth. Yes, I've tried the ketchup concoctions you mentioned (sans lemonade, did you mean lemon juice?) and enjoyed them both.

I don't know if I'd like chocolate ice cream w/ Mountain Dew. I have had root beer floats and wasn't a big fan. What would you title your float? Dark Mountain Float?

Yes, creating random dips is a fun way to experiment in the kitchen.

Do you cook the soup with milk as a substitute for water or do you drink the milk on the side?

That's not so out of the ordinary. Traditionally it's tomato soup for dippin the grilled cheese, but ketchup isn't too far off.

This one isn't too strange, I don't think, but I don't see people do it often: bagel sandwich. Ham and swiss with mustard and mayo on a plain bagel. Scrumptious.

I think they have those at Dunkin Donuts. Or something similar.

Just remembered another one - melted chocolate on chicken.

Also, I know someone who is a fan of dunking pizza slices in soda.

Haven't actually tried this but I've heard of the fizzle-winkie: take a regular coke and dip a twinkie in it like you would a cookie in milk. I'm too afraid my teeth will shatter if I try.

Actually, I used lemonade, lemon juice, and lime juice the first time I made the ketchup concoction because I was at home. Subsequent times I was in the college cafeteria, so only lemonade was available. Any citrus will work. You just want to get the acid to curdle the mayonnaise a little.

The highlight of root beer floats is the crust they give the vanilla ice cream. I don't really consider the chocolate Mountain Dew shake a float since I immediately stir it. The highlight is the zing it gives to the chocolate. I don't think I ever named that one. Dark Mountain sounds good. The only soda-shake/float I ever named was Strawberry-Peach Passion which I usually shorten to Peach Passion. That's just strawberry soda with peach ice cream.

Intentionally? :yuck: I've done that before by accident... in my Life cereal... on my 8th birthday... but I went ahead with it because no one was paying attention to my fussing between every bite until I'd almost finished the whole bowl. So orange juice, milk, and Life is one odd food combination I definitely do not recommend.

Oh, and I forgot to say earlier that I agree that balsamic vinegar is good with everything.

As the title suggest.. do you ever combine foods that.. most people wouldn't consider and found some unique, tasty combinations? Whether from desperation, curiosity or boredom. So i'll start with 2 off the top of my head..

Sour cream and onion chips with applesauce as a dip
Chicken nuggets with applesauce as a dip

And no.. i didn't create those 2 at the same time. The nuggets were first when i was a kid.. and the chips one was when i was bored and got curious later on in life.

I read about the Fool's Gold Loaf (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.'s_Gold_Loaf) the other day and made my own out of the ingredients I had at home at the time (basically just two pieces of sliced bread, peanut butter, jam, and fried chunks of bacon) and it was good! That's what I make myself for lunch before heading out to school and work now.
