.... the best RPG of all time? I personally haven't found anything that comes close. The Witcher is kind of funny, but still can't compare.

Discuss.

I liked Planescape Torment more. Shadows of Amn is excellent, but myself and others that enjoyed Torment..actually felt like better people for experiencing the game...

BG2 was good, but will never ever compare to Planescape: Torment.

If you havent played it you should try find a copy, the best dnd game on PC ive ever played.

Nope. Can't say i've ever played but will have to check it out.

What I liked about BG2 was the immersive storyline. Obviously the graphics are way too outdated now, but even so, the game was able to make you feel as if you were in the Forgotten Realms. I've never had any other game come close to simulating the immersiveness of the gameworld.

wow. Allot of forgotten realm based games! Jeesh.. I still like the original BG best in that grouping. And I liked Icewind Dale as well. Doesn't mean the BGII wasn't good, in fact, I loved it, but was taken from it before I finished it.

I don't know if I would call it the best RPG of all time, though I would call it one of the best single player RPGs ever made with Diablo as a close rival. All in all, BG2 had descent graphics for the time, inventive character roles, a complex and intricate story line, and an expansive game play system featuring numerous powerful, fun to use spells like time stop, absolute immunity, illusions and death fiend summons.

As with any good game, I found it to have tremendous replay value. After beating it the first time I still found myself going back to it curious about how the game would have been different if I had tried approaching the story line from a different angle, as well as how the game play varied from class to class.

Though I still think it’s a great game, the main reason why I wouldn’t put it as “the best” is because it lacks multiplayer elements that games like WoW or other modern games can offer.

I enjoyed "Planescape: Torment" very much and find Planescape in general the most interesting d&d campaign setting. I also found Neverwinter Nights 2 story quite good (a bit obvious maybe, but very epic: you become noble, fight ordeals, defend a castle in a battle....) and it lets you develop your carachter (bad or good, pro-system or against the system).

Yeah I agree. No multiplayer was a drag. In that case I will say that in my opinion it was the best single player RPG of all time (up until the present).

Diablo II and its expansion has probably one of the most extensive item systems working imo. Playability wise, I think that with the more recent patches, the game tends to be heavily equipment based (a blizzard trend btw), which tailors to hours of countless farming runs. Pvp might be the only redeeming feature online even though it is still catered to hours of item trading
/farming to get the right build.

On another note, are we discounting other pc based D&D spawns?
Neverwinter nights 2 and the expansion were good. Knights of the old republic anyone?

KOTAR the first one was loads of fun, the second one was to buggy for me to enjoy :(*

PS:T hands down. The game is genius. "What can change the nature of a man?"

BG 2 was nice, but I actually prefer 1.

I would call it one of the best single player RPGs ever made with Diablo as a close rival.

Allow me to nitpick, but Diablo is really Hack 'n Slash more than roleplaying. I find it to be quite different from the RPGs I've played. TBH, I find it boring.

Planescape: Torment is probably the most interesting from measuring based on storytelling intertwining with interactivity.

I could never get into either of the Baldur's Gate games, and I've finished over a hundred PC & Console RPGs over the last 20 years. There needs to be a hook for me to get into more open-ended Western-style RPGs. The Elder Scrolls series is another that I've found to be lacking. Fallout series had it, as did most entries in the Ultima series. KOTOR just barely had it.

I'm tempted to talk about console & Japanese RPGs, but that's not what this topic is about.

I don't play many RPGs, I have tried Morrowind, but yes, I think SoA had the richest story line and I haven't played another RPG that was able to provide as vicarious an experience.

I played it and loved it years ago, but I never finished the second one either.

The thing is, my flatmate is bringing back from his country in september. I don't think I'll be able to resist the temptation. Not good for working :scared:

Definitely one of the best RPGs. I remember Baldur's Gate 2 taking up way too much of my time in college. I only regret making my main character a Ranger in the first game, as it forced me to drop Minsc later on in the series for a stronger fighter.

Planescape is something more than a mere RPG. That game was DARK, and I loved every minute of it.

Seeing this thread reminds me I've yet to play through RPG classics like Baldur's Gate I & II, Fallout 1 & 2, Icewind Dale I & II, Arcanum and Planescape: Torment. Funny thing is that I have them all, except for PS:T. I've tried playing them, but can't get past the dated graphics. That's what happens when you arrive at PC gaming in later years, argh. Still, I must try, as I'm sure it only takes a little getting used to. Oh man, so many RPGs, so little time.

As for recent RPGs that I've actually played through, I adore NWN 2: Mask of the Betrayer (go Kaelyn!) and Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines (not D&D, but still). I also have a deep love for NWN 1, having spent countless hours playing it online.
