Ok, here is the problem I've been working on for days. This is on Vista.

Windows Installer, that little POS of service, is started but it doesn't work. I can kill it and start it as much as I like. I have uninstalled the KB with the 4.5 version, didnt fix it, reinstall 4.5, still doesn't work. Unregister and re-register the service from command prompt. Take ownership of and delete all of the files associated with it then reinstall them. Run chckdsk, run sfc, even did a voodoo dance... Looks like im going to have to reinstall Vista if no one has any ideas? I REALLY hate to do that though... I don't think Vista even has the option for repair install like Xp did, though I guess im going to find out :(

Just install XP, and partition off your data when you do it. Vista is a terrible platform.

Alternatively, reinstall Vista and partition off your data when you do it

Can't use XP. Have a DX10 video card and I keep thinking DX10 is going to be put to good use... one day.
I do have several spare drives in the system. A 120 gig maxtor (Actually has an image of my current drive 3 months ago on it, I just cant find any free imaging software and my acronis trial is over). Also 74gig raptor, and a 500gig seagate. Seagate has games and data on it, raptor has windows and steam games on it. I wont lose anything important, just time, annoyance, and downloading lots of updates again. Probably a 2 day ordeal of all my after work spare time :(

Just do the reinstall. I've never tried a repair reinstall on vista, but I can't see why it wouldn't have one as per XP. If you can find a way to do the reimage then do that instead.

Ultimately, starting clean is nice.

Of course.. something like this would never happen in XP....

Can you just system restore to the date you didn't have that KB installed?

Fixed it and got my 4850 clocks back all in one day. This is a good day :D
The 4850 clocks were bad because the flasher mixed up the power states. I had to edit the last 3 power states in RBE and up their voltage to default voltage to get back to 700/1125 (Was stuck at 680/1030).

Now for the windows issue... this one is WEIRD... Know how I said I had a backup image? Somehow windows was using BOTH windows installs at once... across two different hard drives. It was booting from the 74 gig but accessing and storing information on my old slow 120 storage that was supposed to be just sitting idle. I'm not sure nor do I want to theorize how the sharing was happening between the two drives.
I unplugged the 120 to force 74 gig to be alone. It would boot to windows but hang on "preparing your desktop" then eventually go to an all teal colored empty desktop.

I then unpluged the 74gig and forced the 120 to boot on its own, it booted all the way to my desktop and worked BUT it was missing several sets of drivers. Even Windows installer works when its by its self!

Now... if I can just get an image of this functioning windows install onto my 74gig raptor...

Curious...what temps are you running with the 4850? I know that card runs hot as hell with stock settings, which will hopefully be helped once the aftermarket cooling solutions find their way into the market.

DX 10 is "alright" but by the time you get a game that really utilitizes it without burning your computer to cinders, the vista platform may be better.

What I plan on doing is a dual boot system with XP pro and Vista home premium.

I personally dont agree to partitioning hard drives as effeciency will dramatically drop when more then one partition is being used.

As for fixing the Vista. You went through all the methods I knew to fix your issue. Given some time, I am sure you or I could have fixed it. But that could lead to being inefficient.

is at 750/1125 now, idles in the 40s and maxes out at 65. I modded the bios to have the fan scale with temp. Goes to 100% if it were to hit 70*C. Yes it is noisy but I game with sound blocking headphones.
