So I checked all 572 threads in the lounge and no one has asked this before. So fess up we all have them. Is it fried, grilled, stewed, frozen, boiled? Maybe it comes out of plastic wrapped packages, make my taste buds water and tell me the food that gives you the most comfort.

My comfort food hands down is a homemade Mac and Cheese topped with chips and baked in an oven, with at least three parts cheese to every noodle served pipping hot. Damn now I got to go and make Mac and Cheese for dinner tonight now.

Sounds more like a 4 course meal!

I'm simple: pretzels (any variety)
Oh, I also like raspberry truffles.

Generally food of the home made variety. Fried chicken and poutine.

Yup, mine too, grilled cheese sandwich dipped in ketchup (I don't even like ketchup) and horrible Campbell's Tomato soup with plain soda crackers crumbled on top. :cheesy:

Lipton chicken noodle soup (the dry nasty stuff with 10,000 mg of sodium) when I'm sick.

What is comfort food exactly? Is it a kind of food one turn's to when one is upset? Broken-hearted? Sick?

I tend to lose all sense of appetite when I am physically ailing. When I'm stressed/sad/suffering from the throes of unrequited love, well there's always chocolate...

I always think of it as deep winter duldrums depression type food.

and campbells and ketchup? :yuck:

I usually make my own tomato soup or buy something like pacific organics. I am also a whole wheat type person instead of white, unless we're talking about thick crusty peasant bread.

Sure that sounds great, but for comfort it's gotta be Cambell's and Heinz, just like mom used to make. Don't forget to use plastic cheese (American cheese slices) for the sandwich. Or Velveeta if you have it.

I'm pretty sure food needs to have very little or no nutritional value at all to qualify as comfort food. :p

ughhhhh, eeek... i'd rather die than eat velvetta!!!! YUCK!!! srlsly ickarooni!

I use tillamook extra sharp. I prefer not to eat like my mom fed me, that's not comfort, that's acid indigestion! it's a wonder I made it to adulthood...

(my dad's dish was mac and cheese without cheese but lots of Catsup. ugh, when he made that my mom and me always went out to eat.)

There was one dish she made that made me puke every time she forced me to eat it. I'd end up puking in my sleep too. turns out I was seriously allergic to one of the ingredients.. and she forced me to eat shellfish even though my better senses said stay away.. turned out I have the serious shellfish allergy too.

I have hostilities when it comes to my mother and the things she made me eat. ;)

Thanksgiving dinner... The whole deal, of course (including the cranberry sauce shaped like a tin can)...

It's the fact that I can't abuse Thanksgiving dinner same way I can abuse chocolate. Thanksgiving dinner has value in its scarcity, so it never gets old...

I eat something like a grilled cheese sandwich almost every day. It's (brown) bread, butter, slice of turkey breast, cheese, all of this grilled, then yogurt & curry on the top, sometimes with lettuce, onion, tomato and green pepper.

But black forest cake is the real comfort food for me, too.

I don't know if I consider it to be comfort food, but the worst thing I can think of that I absolutely love is chicken fried steak and mashed taters. I try not to eat it too often though.

I've gone for periods where I eat nothing but a whole wheat sandwich with sharp cheddar toasted then add butterleaf lettuce fresh vine ripened tomatoes onion and (this is the controversial part) mayo pickle relish and mustard.

I didn't know there was more than one type of curry. I've just checked it, and it's rather curry powder, standard European version.

I have this period since a couple of years, at least concerning evening meal. Mayo+mustard should add up to something like a tartar sauce.

I ate some lamb in an Indian restaurant, but I don't remember exactly what it was. It was spicy and had a good taste. I've just checked out the menu. Maybe it was 'Madras Lamb Curry', but I'm absolutely not sure about it.

Without a shadow of a doubt, Homemade Lasagne or Moussaka. It puts me into a happy sleepy state of mind every time. Especially after the 4th helping, and the 3rd pinot noir. ;)

Everyone should try a side car. I want them showing up in restaurants across the nation. I've already had wins in two restaurants. They are the best mixed drink 'tini type thing evah~

For comfort food, I like a blueberry cake donut and a bottled, room-temperature vanilla frappuchino. When I'm at work a Pepsi from the vending machine works quite nicely as a comfort "food" also.

a couple of years ago I got to go to spain. the problem with going to spain for someone like me is that I am highly allergic to a couple things and I don't speak spanish. this greatly limited my food choices. I spent a week living on choc croissants and cava and patatas bravas. I was also walking a good 20 miles a day though so it all worked out ( as I said I didn't speak the language and I kept misjudging distances between things. IIRC I actually lost 10lbs on that trip. It really wasn't a bad trip ;)

I hope to visit Spain some day. I am not by any means fluent as I don't get to converse much in Spanish. But, if I have a couple of reference books, I can get around. I would just be asking.. repita por favor ALOT! hehe

I have a recipe for patatas bravas. I still haven't made it for myself. MMMM!

olives (but strangely enough not olive oil) Olives are guaranteed to make me uncontrollably vomit though. it's not the taste or anything like that.
sage (big allergy)
shellfish (big allergy)
most melons but only mildly allergic
soy again mild allergies I can eat small amounts without reaction but larger amounts or soy sauce give me difficulty.
Turnips
there are other things too that are mild but because they are mild i don't remember them easily. they don't come up in my life with regularity..

Goodness girl! You are racked with allergies. I have heard (haven't done the research) that the process used to make olives fit for consumption is necessary because before that they are poisonous. I don't know if that is true.

As far as I know I am not allergic to most things really but I have Irritable Bowel Syndrome so I have difficult with foods at random. I stay away from red meat and I don't eat alot of onion or garlic or foods that produce a lot of gas. It sucks because I garlic a lot.

If you're interested, it's likely because of proteins in the olive. That's what most human allergens are - proteins. That's probably why the oil doesn't negatively affect you.

Um, what exactly IS a deep fried Mac N Cheese ? Is it a big mac deep fried including the buns/bread?

It's the same thing as anything else that's deep fried.

Step 1: Cover in batter
Step 2: Deep fry
Optional step 3: Repeat step one and two.

Home made deep fry is the best.

Naww. Basically you take mac and cheese, chill it overnight, cut it into 2 or 3 inch cubes, batter it then throw it in hot oil.
