I've been having piano classes for 6 months now, still pretty beginner, just wondering if someone else here plays...

Taught myself to play at age 12. Took lessons off and on.

Wish I had a piano or keyboard now. I miss it.

My mom used to make money on the side as a piano teacher so I played from ages 6 to 16 or so.

What is DipABRSM? Just wondering... By the way, Amy Lee is quite a formidable pianist. :p

I dabbled with piano a bit during my music theory days. I'd like to get a keyboard at some point.

Started on a keyboard at 15 and played some easy stuff. Started composing few love melodies (all unfinished except from one for a girlfriend), took piano lessons and got bored. My KB is back on the box since 4 months ago.

I played around with the piano back when I was still playing trumpet. I since learned that I'm not very musically inclined and stopped doing both. Once in a while I try to pick up the piano or guitar again, but it never works out well.

Not exactly. I've never played the piano (although I had one of those toy electronic keyboards with the sample music). What I'd like to learn to play is the synthesizer. I just imagine all the freedom it would bring me when I could conduct my own orchestra with the proper software.

My sister and I had piano lessons but performing used to intimidate me.....had zero confidence so did a lot of crying during recitals at the end of term in front of other kids and their parents. Would like to try again now though.

I'm trying to teach myself how to play. I just love hearing music, I always wished I could play some myself.

Did it for 7 years. Got pretty good and then "life" happened and I had to give it up. I miss it though, and I plan to go back to it someday.

Playing regularly since 6. 16 now. That's 10 years.

(Though I don't really like to play the piano. I would go for the violin instead.)

Dip ABRSM = College Level
LRSM = Bachelor's Degree
FRSM = Master's Degree

It's basically a professional diploma. I'm taking Music Performance. Hoping to achieve three majors this way.

It was reported in today's newspaper that a ten year old boy in Hong Kong was awarded Dip. ABRSM. He is known as the youngest candidate who was awarded such diploma since ABRSM was established in 1889.

:scared: WHAT? I'm FIVE years too late?

I play the flute, however, I enjoy the piano/keyboard a great deal. :P

Oh that's cool! I play only for hobbie, I bought myself a Yamaha P-140 and learned to play 2 Bach minuets and the love theme from 1968's Romeo and Juliet so far, among some exercise-like music from my book. I don't plan to make a living from it though, actually I'm studying law, but I really love just to sit down and play for one hour or so, makes me forget everything but the music. :p

I played piano since I was 6 and stopped taking lessons when I was 16 (only because my teacher decided to retire). I practiced and taught myself after that and have always enjoyed playing the piano. I have been yearning to play and practice lately, but I no longer have a piano to play in the past couple of years. Although I can easily purchase an electric keyboard and stand, it is nothing like playing the actual instrument. Playing the piano has always been a release for me in many ways. I really do miss it and I have all the intention to pick it up as soon as I can have access to a piano/keyboard.

Only have room for a keyboard, sadly. There is no room here for a piano.

There really is no comparison. The sound of an acoustic instrument is so much Better than that of an "appliance" instrument.

Played the piano since I was 6, I got a piece of paper from the McGill conservatory of music that looks nice on a CV attesting that I got the equivalent of a Secondary V. The two next levels being Collegial I and collegial II.

Stopped at Sec.V,too much stuff to do,time consuming and it wasn't my passion.

I had a cheap Casio when I was a kid. I learned a little bit, and I can sort of futz my way around on a few songs, but I always had a hard time using both hands at once. I never had much trouble doing that on the tubs or the guit-box, but I can't really do it on the keys. (Yeah, you know I'm cool 'cause I use musician slang.)

I used to play the piano, but I didn't have any idea how the bass clef worked at that point. The teacher didn't even explain well, just saying I need to play..."yes, that one!" I lost interests in the piano as a result, so I quit at 12. I am playing the violin nowadays.

Used to play - hated the theory side.

Have since discovered electricity and it's Bass, Bass, Bass all the way now.

I certainly admire someone who has the patience and ability to stick at it, I love listening to well played classical piano.

I know! I lack patience when it comes to practice. I could bear the theory side though, as long as someone explained it to me well. But I love listening to music though. ;)

I've learnt a little on my own a few years back.. mainly because I wanted to play comtemporary songs. :p Then I got bored of it because I'm not skilled enough.

I studied piano for like 2 years in elementary school. Then I got sick of playing two instruments and decided the woodwinds were my thing (I played recorder at the time, and switched to flute when my hands got big enough/my school got a band program). Now I can play exactly one piece on the piano: Well-Tempered Clavier Prelude #1, that I just play for fun sometimes…far from working on it or anything, I just like to play it because it's pretty.

I've played the piano since I was 7. That's, uh...15 years. Wow. :stunned: I've never been terribly serious about it. It's just fun to play when no one's around.

I also play the violin, though I am quite rusty at that little bugger. I've been meaning to pick it up for so long. My issue is that I don't like people to hear me play unless I've prepared something specifically for them. Weird, I know. It'd be easier if I lived alone.

I've played for about four years now and am in the process of getting my letters.
Theory though.... meh. MEH. Oh, I hate it.
