View Full Version : how do you keep track of the topics

This forum moves very quickly. I am new to forums. I have traditionally stuck to mailing lists. Things go in order of response to your mailbox that way. If you have gmail it even keeps lists by topic in order of response. This is very different. I've been using the new posts tab but doing it only by that way will probably miss a number of subjects just by rate of renewal. I am finding it hard to shift gears and go area by area and new posts. But if you don't do the new posts area it doesn't give you an idea of how much traffic a thread has gotten. (and for some reason that's interesting to me)
No real point to this, other than interest in how others process this type of board? I am sure I'll figure out what works best for me in time. But it never hurts to learn from others.

With over 1100 post, I think I'll listen to you.

I use the subscribe feature to 'bookmark' threads I'd like to stay in touch with that might have new postings, but due to refresh rates might not be in the new posts page. I use the subscribe/no notification and I navigate to them by just clicking "quick Links > subscribed threads" if there are new posts, the ones I haven't read show up as bolded in the list.
I do the same thing as you to find new threads to post to and I also feel addicted to the new posts and the thread traffic on them.

I tend to check out new posts first (Quick Links->Today's Posts) and sometimes check my older posts to follow older threads (Quick Links->Your Profile->Statistics->Find all posts by .../Find all threads started by ...).
It would be nice to have a feature showing how many posts were on a given thread since my last post and last visit.
I avoided subscribing threads. Somehow it feels limiting.

I'm used to a forum that didn't have subscriptions or "show new posts," so I just skim the first page of a subforum.

I subscribe to threads I'm interested in keeping a close watch on. Otherwise I just go to each subforum and look for threads with new posts. If the title interests me then I read it. I don't mind seeing the old threads along with the new so I don't use the "new posts" button too often, I just look at the ones in bold. There is also the "mark forums read" button if you do like the new posts button and want to start with a clean slate.

yeah, I agree on both points. good idea on the checking older posts to follow older threads thru your quick links.

i don't like subscribing to threads since you only get the ones you want and none of the new interesting ones that i check out
so, i do a broad sweep throughout by new posts option

Wow, there are ways to selectively look at threads? I'll try some of those out. I've been having trouble remembering which threads I've posted in and which ones I've only read. I like to go back after I've posted in case someone asked a question or for clarification. I'll try the subscribe option so I can keep track.
I'm new to the forum so I just cruise the sub categories for interesting topics, new or old, doesn't matter to me. I tend to gravitate to a few more often than others, yes I like silly threads.
I also stalk people. Not in a creepy way, but if I see a comment that is interesting or well thought out by someone I look at other posts by them and jump to threads that way. It puts me in the middle of threads sometimes but that's ok, I just scroll up to the start and then read through if it's of interest to me.
So that's what the 'New Posts' thingie is for, I'll try that, but I'm still working my way through some of the old posts for now.

Actually someone has made it one step longer in the last few days by changing the 'your profile' screen.
