I had to start this thread. I never really thought much of the Mortal kombat games. They were fun but broken beyond belief; invariably inferior to Street Fighter series. They were always fun and worth playing though. However after doing some research on Mortal Kombat 2011 I honestly think this could be game of the year. It seems this time Midway, or whatever they call themselves these days, actually got it right.

Yeah been awhile since Ive been excited for a fighting game myself outside of Tekken or the new Street Fighter.
I loved the MK series up until about the MK 3 Ultimate or whatever it was. Never got into any of the 3d ones.. didnt feel the same.
For anyone old enough at the time to remember, the first Mortal Kombat almost single handidly created the game rating system due to its violence. It just added even more to its mythos instead of making it less popular.. of course.

Looks nice, how does it play though? Beat em ups get it wrong when there's too many moves/combos in my opinion, i'd sacrifice all that for the ease and playability of the old street fighter, maybe im just old fashioned though.

Yeah and I got the censored Snes version.

I like fighting games which are easy to get into but very difficult to master. That's why I prefer SSFIV to BlazBlue. Mortal Kombat was known for having fairly shallow gameplay. From what I picked they are taking a leaf from Street fighters book, which would great.

I agree, this game looks awesome. Mortal Kombat may have always been cheesy but it's also always been hilarious and fun.
Of course now everytime I think of mortal Kombat i think of this video...lol

Mortal Kombat was actually my first fighting game. I never really got into SFII at the time.
I liked the first Mortal Kombat because I was actually able to beat it. I've been able to track my decreasing skill in fighting games through Mortal Kombat iterations. Mortal Kombat II I could get to the final boss but would lose. MKIII I would make about halfway through. The lowpoint was Mortal Kombat IV, where I would actually lose the first match (though the game's transition to 3 dimensions didn't go that well).

I began to lose interest by MK3. Too sci fi and the AI was too difficult. I hated MK 4 like most early 3-D games but eventually found MK Deadly alliance for a pittance and enjoyed. Still couldn't hold a candle to Street fighter in terms of gameplay. That's the main reason I'm really excited by MK 2011. I think they got the gameplay right this time.

The review scores have been universally amazing. An average of about 93%-on par with SSFIV. Could this rival SSFIV?

I never got what was so great about 2d fighters. Even after you learn all the combos and AT they're still really simple and boring... Mostly just mindgames.

I'm not against blood or guts but this is just one of those games where it just seems too bloody; makes me uncomfortable.
Oh no, I think I'm getting old.... :lipsrsealed:

MK1 was a weak imitaion of SF2 but MK2 was absolutely great in its own right. Didnt care much for MK3 and the MK on the gamecube was dreadful bar the well rendered bouncing boobies. ah!the good old days of 16bit computing.

Just got it today. It's brilliant. Almost as good as Super street fighter IV but nothing beats the depth of the SF engine. Best MK game ever by a mile and the second best fighting game on current gen systems.

This game is bloody fantastic. I haven't been this into a fighting game for quite some time.
The fatalities are some of the best ever and the X-Ray moves never get old.
GOTY contender for me.

Here's a really good two part retrospective of the Mortal Kombat series.

Fuck no man.The mindgames are what makes it so good.
Dead or Alive 2 for the win. Screw MK.

Mindgames are just "will my opponent do A, or will they do B?", and reacting with C or D, or fooling your opponent into thinking you'll do F when you're actually doing E. You end up playing poker pretty quickly.
Traditional fighters like SF, Tekken and MK all play rouhly the same and are all pretty simple. I've played more of the first two and they were pretty fun when I was younger - now they're just alright.
What I fail to see is any real depth in this type of engine. You can block high or block low. You can hit high or hit low. You can shoot projectiles or use a gap closers. You can hit, grab or block and counter. There are also an array of fancy special moves you can use with cool animations. Okay.
Your character must always face the opponent. Every stage is exactly the same. There are no environmental mechanics such as spawnable items or changing terrain. The only win condition is to do more damage than your opponent, unlike in other games that have expendable resources and multiple win/tie conditions. I could go on.
I fail to see the depth there. Feel free to educate me.

Sure, I'm always down to share my perspective on video games, in the hope a young and aspiring game designer might be reading and change an industry corrupted by little Nintendo representatives in Prius.

Isn't that what every zero-sum game is about?
Even incredibly complex strategy games such as Hearts of Iron at heart (no pun) requires that the player play mindgames with their opponents.
More mundane mainstream strategy games (Starcraft) also is a huge game of Poker, but with a ridiculous amount of micro added in the mix.
The only difference between mindgames of the fighting and strategy variety are the time you have to take decisions.
I never really liked the games you mentionned however. They were too slow for my liking (espescially Tekken) and I didn't like the little blue sparks when you hit your opponents.
Also, I taught that some fighting games(Soul Calibur,MK) did not make any sense at all and I could never lift my suspension of disbelief long enough to really get into them. Stylistically, them and I did not match at all.
I propose Dead or Alive 2 as the ultimate in fighting games!!!!

I used to play Street Fighter all the time, then got bored with it. But after watching people play Marvel Vs Capcom 3 at my friend's LAN store, I wanna play!

I can remember playing Mortal Kombat with my sister when we were in pre-k! Ah, the simple days, when I had my tiny t.v. and sega system. We actually had to borrow it from my uncle because my mom didn't want both of her daughters playing fighting games.... XD

I tend fantasize a lot about particular things and currently have my mind to Mortal Kombat. What are some creative moves, special abilities, characters and especially fatalities your ruthless little mind can conjure? ;)
A character able to exert concentrated thoughts and ideas to reality and use those working systems to defeat my enemies suits me well, as any other true INJ character type. So generally summoning anything you can think of as long as you can focus is my ideal character, not just the sorcerer repeating already known spells. Thinking of a new creature or working contraption that is a devastating mix of danger focused to destroy my enemies seems good for me.
All the disturbing and horrific fatalities you could get from that character, too many.
My thread was moved, oh no! Just realize the primary function of this post, what are some cool fatalities you can think of?
