I was big comic book guy growing up. Anyone have favorite character or series that they liked?

For me:
Hellblazer: John Constantine
Batman
100 Bullets
Sandman
Alan Moore's Swamp Thing
Watchmen
Sin City

Calvin & Hobbes, all the way.

Dungeon (Lewis Trondheim)
Black Jack (Osamu Tezuka)
Moomin (Tove Jansson)

I was lucky to happen upon 2-3 of the above issues throughout my random trips to the library last year. I haven't gone out of my way to track down physical prints, but I don't want to read the rest on a computer either. I also really really enjoyed V for Vendetta (Alan Moore)

Batman, always.

Captain America, when done right. Which was rarely, unfortunately.

Early X-Men. (By which I mean both the original 60s books and the Byrne/Claremont/Cockrum mid-to-late 80s and very early 90s books.)

Otherwise, I'm more drawn (ha) to writers than to specific characters or series. I'll read anything Alan Moore writes, anything Mark Waid writes, anything by Chuck Dixon. There are some others that I can't be bothered to think of right now. But I find that a good writer can do wonders with characters that are otherwise kind of lame-o--and a bad writer can take a great character and turn it into crap.

Also I like Usagi Yojimbo.

And I hate Gambit. Nobody can write Gambit well, because Gambit sucks.

Dark Knight Returns was awesome.

Forgot to mention Ed Brubaker's Sleepers Vol. 1 & 2. Amazing series and Warren Ellis Planetary series.

Emma Frost (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.)

Telepathy
Since her introduction, Emma Frost's primary mutant power has been telepathy. She is capable of extraordinary psionic feats, including the telepathic standards of: broadcasting and receiving thoughts, mind-control, altering perceptions and memories, psychic shielding, astral projection, mind switching, brain engram modification, mental sedation, and induction of mental pain via touch.

She is also able to boost or activate a mutant's powers through access of their brain's neurological pathways, and can communicate across global distances unaided.

The exact level of her telepathic power has varied depending on writers and has ranged from weaker than other prominent telepaths to rivaling the abilities of Charles Xavier himself. She has also been referred to as a "psi of the highest order," been ranked among the five most skilled telepaths on the planet, and has demonstrated the ability to overcome more powerful telepaths, such as Nate Grey, or Rachel Summers, through greater experience and skill.

Later, under the writing of Matt Fraction, Emma was classified as an "omega-level" telepath, the highest ranking for mutants, defined as having "unlimited potential."

Diamond Form

During the destruction of Genosha, Frost manifested a secondary mutation giving her the ability to transform her body into organic diamond. In this form, Frost is translucent and retains mobility while being nigh invulnerable and able to support incredible amounts of weight, though different writers have shown varying accounts of her strength. Emma's diamond body is virtually tireless as she does not produce fatigue poisons and has no need for water nor food.

She is also numbed from emotion, pain and empathy, impervious to cold and resistant to heat in this form. Despite this high level of invulnerability, her diamond form has a single molecular flaw, which if exploited —such as being shot with a diamond bullet— can cause her body to shatter.

Frost's full range of abilities between her diamond state and regular form have been inconsistent; however, later occurrences depict that Frost cannot access her psychic powers in diamond form, explained by different writers as either a distinct genetic flaw or suppression by her diamond form's adamantine luster. Her diamond form is also stated to emit low-level ultraviolet light, causing it to glow in darkness.

Smart-ass

Frost has a gifted intellect with college degrees in multiple fields, including a Bachelors of Science in Education with a minor in Business Administration from the prominent Marvel universe's Empire State University.

A superb businesswoman, Emma Frost for many years was founder and CEO of Frost Enterprises, a major multinational conglomerate headquartered in New York City that rivaled Stark Enterprises and Worthington Industries and specialized in shipping, aerospace engineering and new technology R&D.

Frost is also a highly capable planner, an electronics expert, and can invent machines that grant various psionic abilities, such as "Multivac", a mutant locater capable of monitoring the psionic levels of mutants; the "Hallucinator" used to induce hypnotic hallucinations to brainwash others; the gun-like device that enabled her to exchange minds and powers with Storm; and the Mindtap mechanism which enhanced and enabled her Hellfire cohort Mastermind to project his illusions directly into the mind of the Phoenix

Psylocke (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.)

Telepathy

Psylocke originally possessed the power of telepathy, she could read and project thoughts over long distances; control minds; subdue and tap into other's powers; affect people's memories; project mental illusions; and generate psi-bolts that could stun, injure, or kill others. She could also project her astral self, and the astral bodies of other people, into the astral plane. She could scan entire towns with her mind, and leaf through the psyches of the inhabitants of a city to learn of their condition or intentions. She was powerful enough to telepathically "shout" to her teammates in Australia while she was in Washington D.C. without the aid of any type of power-enhancing apparati such as Cerebro.

Psylocke could also use her telepathy to project a focused beam of directed psionic energy called a "psycho-blast" that could incapacitate or kill a living being instantly. This attack was powerful enough to pierce the Juggernaut's psi-proof helmet. The psycho-blast was able to affect inorganic material as well as living targets (when directing a psycho-blast at Sabretooth the energy destroyed the metal Cerebro helmet she was wearing).

Teleportation

After her exposure to the Crimson Dawn, she also gained the ability to teleport herself and others using areas of shadow as gateways. The teleportation could cover huge distances; on one occasion she transported the X-Men from America to Africa in a few seconds. She could also teleport through the shadows of other dimensions. Psylocke has not been seen using this ability since her imprisonment of the Shadow King in the astral plane; during a mission against Stryfe, she mentioned to Nightcrawler that she no longer possessed this ability.

Homegirl got nerfed.

Telekinesis

Psylocke began to manifest a telekinetic katana composed of raw psionic energy. At its lowest intensity her katana functions much like her psychic knife once did, short-circuiting the victim's nervous system on impact. At its highest level, the katana can slice through almost any physical matter. Psylocke's control over the katana is such that she can slice an armored opponent and cut through the armor, but only leave her opponent stunned or unconscious. Psylocke's telekinetic manifestations produce visible radiance in the physical world. Thus, she can use her psychic katana as a makeshift light source in areas of darkness. The katana can also affect beings that are more powerful than Psylocke herself.

Aside from the blade, Psylocke can use her telekinesis to enhance her speed, strength, and fighting skills to superhuman levels. She can also levitate herself and others, or manipulate matter in standard telekinetic fashion. She can also create telekinetic shields of various sizes and strength, and her telekinesis has been said to be strong enough to shatter mountains. At the time of Betsy's resurrection, Marvel Girl claimed that Psylocke's telekinesis was on a level even she couldn't match.

Psylocke was shown to be immune to all forms of psionic manipulations such as mind-reading, mind-control or mental attacks, and attempts of telepathic communication.

She is able to use her telekinesis to modify her own molecular structure to render herself invisible to at least the naked eye.

Ninja Skills

Psylocke has been classified as a master martial artist, though the specific fighting arts she has mastered have never been revealed. Psylocke's fighting skills and techniques have been shown to surpass those of the average Hand ninja, or Crimson Dawn Undercloak, and have been said to rival those of a ninja master.

She could also use her telepathy to mask her presence from other people, humans and superhumans alike, e.g. from Wolverine's super-enhanced senses, or from Jean Grey's telepathy.

Female Ninjas = Awesome

Old Skool fave:
Grendel by Matt Wagner
Grendel: War Child was a roller coaster ride of violence and mayhem
Devil Quest was a very short comic but Wagner put everything into it, even switching up the artistic and writing style for each characters chapter.

Currently reading:
Uncanny X-Force 1 to 4, Rick Remender and Jerome Opena have their shit together, awesome.
Batwoman Elegy. Just started reading it, the art is fantastic, JH Williams III.

Spiderman has always been my favorite. Peter Parker kinda mirrored my life when I was young, troubled, unhappy, and full of pressure.

I love Ironman and Thor, especially the runs in the last twoish years. Such good series, with great writing and art.

Too bad Ironman 2 was terrible. I hope thors going to be good, but i don't they'll be able to make it epic instead of corny.

Daredevil by Frank Miller, Bendis, and Brubaker. The series has quite a few great writers take a shot at the character. I liked the Bendis run the best. He also wrote Alias which was also pretty good.

I've followed the X-Men for years and years. I've spent more money on their comics than I care to remember. Psylocke and Rogue are my favorite ones.

Currently my favorite ongoing comic series is Scalped by Jason Aaron. It is very realistic in style and all the characters in it seem very real.

Also Ordinary Victories by Manu Larcenet was very, very good.

Batman. A hero I think many people can relate to because he doesn't have any super powers.

Don't worry about it. They "reboot" the series every other year. Just like all the rest. It's becoming way too common.
