A big pet hate for me is the increasing use of 'txt lang'. It drives me mad, the poor spelling/grammar its just plain laziness.
How do you all feel about the use of text language and more to the point, do you use it?

I don't use "txt tlk". I prefer typing out my words completely, even if I might, and usually do, get laughed at.

I abhor it. It seems to even go beyond the desktop and cell phone, especially people within my age group, when just a few weeks ago I had to peer edit another person's paper and...well...my confidence in this country's literacy has eroded ever since.

I don't mind it as much. It's usually a good indicator of a person's intelligence and helps form a basis to evaluate how much I should value that person's opinion. With more care, it can be used to infer other information from the person outside of what they are actually trying to talk about. Of course they don't actually realise that I'm reading what they write not becuase I value their input but rather I'm using it to gauge the uneducated beliefs of their demographic to refine my ability to manipulate them should the need arise. Not to mention increase my own proficency in "net-speak" which can be useful depending on who your trying to communicate/manipulate.

Depending on who you are talking to, it takes more "style" them substance to win them over.

I sometimes write "idk" if I'm actually texting someone, but that's as far as I go. Most people I know use T9 anyway, so it's really more effort 2 rt thngs lyk dys. I rarely capitalize "I" when I'm texting, though, and sometimes I notice myself doing that while typing. It worries me.

I absolutely hate when people use *asterisks* to emphasize a word as they would during speech.

Do you mean to signify a third person point of view?

I tolerate 'lol' but I never use it (this post is the one exception and strictly for demonstration purposes) I find it doesn’t adequately express laughter, when you translate the letters into literal words it doesn’t sound like you’re really amused :undecided:

I never use it by choice, but will only use it when the person on the other end actually seems incapable of full words. As for 'predictive' txt, dont even get me started! It actually slows me down, for some reason.

Ha...No it's when someone uses them to emphasize that they *really* mean something, or that the world is very *important*. That's what these are for.

I find it very disruptive when people write u and ur instead of you and your, for instance. It's not uncommon on another forum where I'm active, and I've noticed that it's especially predominant among, although by no means restricted to, members from a particular geographic region. They also seem to think that please is spelled plz.

I admit to using certain jargon abbreviations, though, like IIRC and AFAICT. I'm also guilty of using LOL every now and then.

I chop off text only if taking notes or for some other reasons I have to write quickly. One of the good things in this forum is that people use proper spelling of words wich turns even complex problems into something I can understand, while many like to turn simple discourses into an intricate mass of strange acronyms.

I don't understand half of it, so I tend not to use it but I have become a user of WTF because I find it less offensive then spelling out the vulgarity.

That's funny, because the other day I was the middle man in a conversation, so I told my wife to text the person back like it was me speaking. When she read what she was going to text it ended in lol, and I had her erase the lol saying I would never put that in my text. It's actually annoying personally.

I didn't know the asterisks bothered people. You must hate me, *really* hate me. I do this quite a bit!

Then again, I'm old school Internet. That used to be the only way to add emPHAsis on the right syLLAbel , so to speak. We didn't have easy bolds and italics back in the day. And too many ALL CAPS is just rude. ;)

Side Note: I don't mind LOL, as a quick acknowledgment of humor. But I have toned it down. And if I am txting, I usually write stuff out longhand, but if I am in a hurry or don't have enough characters left, or am in the car (yes, slow traffic texting ... sue me!) I economize characters for the sake of safety, politeness, or pure irritation.

I don't really do a lot of texting so I don't use the language on a consistent basis. My bad habit is not syncing up my thoughts and typing speed. I leave out words which tends to disrupt the meaning of my thoughts.

I'm 100% fine with texting and lol and whatever other acronyms people use. I actually enjoy them. This is probably because I grew up with the internet (was on it ever since I was 5, hooked since, INTJ paradise.)

Actually, when I'm online I usually only capitalize the first letter [of my sentences] and use commas... otherwise no punctuation. I only am using so much punctuation because I'm here! xD
