I was curious if anyone else here likes to play chess.

Ive only started playing in November and found that I am fairly good. For whatever reason I really find it entertaining and satisfying.

I love chess. I use to play online a lot but for some reason a screen isn't the same as a good board IRL.

I like it. I first got into it when I bought a book from the school book order in gr. 3 that taught me how to play. I played a bit throughout elementary.
I started playing again recently when mind_wander invited me.

I like how there are so many different setups/openings and how elaborate plans can be forged and broken on the spot.

I'd have to agree with that... but unfortunately I usually can't find many people that like to play.

Where do you both play? I signed up on chess.com under the same name if you want to challenge me. I have to agree with setups and such. No two games are ever the same.

Of all the things I'm not good at, I think chess is the thing I most wish I were good at.

We play on yahoo chess. It's more of a casual social event than an intense game.

I play chess although not very often. My love of the game was pretty much ruined when I was a kid. My dad was a competitive chess player and I was a natural at it, so he decided I was going to be in the top five women's chess champion circle. My first tournament was when I was 12. I rose up the ladders quickly and because of that became a sensation at the tournament. I was beating this guy and had a crowd of 20 or so kibbitzing and it stressed me out out beyond reasonable means. I lost the game because of it and quit chess for the next 12 years. The oppressive feel of it was a pack of hyenas going in for the kill. 40 year old guys were a little peeved to have a 12 year old kid beating their asses. They weren't making literal threats towards me, but they were on another level.
From there it progressed to the point that I'd only play if a bottle of wine was in the mix. I'll play occasionally for fun now but I still have too many issues involved in that game to truly enjoy it anymore.

Used to play a bit when I was younger but I seem to have dropped off in recent years. I still play a game or two against friends now and then, I'm not too bad. I also read a chess strategy book in grade 3, cover to cover, and was really into it back then. I think my trouble was that I didn't have anyone decent to play against, so my interested waned.

I wish I was more into it now, I'm sure I'd appreciate the tactics and strategy a lot more.

I wonder which type is more adept to play Chess; INTJs or INTPs?

I picked it up naturally when I was about 13. I don't play very often, nor have I ever read any book pertaining to it, however, I'm better than most that would call themselves hobbyists.

If you want to discuss strategy, or playing styles, I'm very much and endgame player. People who study the game and different openings can almost always gain the upper hand in the beginning. I find if I trade down to a minimal amount of pieces I can simply out-calculate them. I'm not a gambit player, or even really a strategy player, the way I see it, I just simplify the equation to a point where the game becomes more a test heuristics, which is my best bet to win.

I think chess glorifies war.

Also I never had the patience to learn and no one to play with…

how does it glorify war. it's a very bloodless process. I think they ought to fight wars this way instead of on the battle field.

Okay. I recently read a science fiction story involving time travel in which someone returns to ancient India only to be forced to take part in a chess game played with real people. Whenever a piece was removed the person representing it was slain…

That's not war. That's morbidly creative execution.

I enjoy a good game of chess. I haven't played for awhile. When I was in school we had one of these serious chess players that was a bad loser. He use to play 8-10 people at the same time. The teacher that use to be in charge use to make this guy play regularly against me to teach him patience. All his pieces that I captured I use to make a court yard out of and pretend the knights would drink out of the rooks being the water fontain. Use to drive him insane!
by the end of that year he was alot calmer and wasn't such a bad loser.

Tell that to the pawn starting at B4.

Tell that to the pawn starting at B4.

I imagine it would depend upon who was playing those pawns. Some players prefer to keep the pieces alive as long as possible. others are vicious slayers of all who comes in their path..

but Dreamer... Generally speaking chess pieces have no blood...Although...I just thought of a way to make a geeky killing...

Candy chocolate chessmen with raspberry filling. You eat the pieces after you take them. Although you'd have to have back up in case there is a pawned resurrection of a formerly dead piece.

Played it a couple of times years ago.

Wouldn't mind learning and playing it one day.

i like chess. i play online at: To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. under the id of carbondated333 (or something very close to this). depending on this site i usually range from 1150-1500. i like to play to relax, when i'm bored sometimes or if i haven't played in a while. i tend to get bored with getting any better...raising my rating any higher than it is at present. i will play some her who like the game and/or would like to get better at it. timing i suppose will have to be arranged in advance. i have no problems with this. i do like a good game. who knows may game may even improve. it helps i think to play against someone one is somewhat aware of/familiar with. we shall see.

I like chess but do not play as often as I used to. I started to play at 6 and it was among my major hobbies in late teens. Now I play occasionally on internet. Anyway, I am only moderate player.

Chess is paying for my college education. I have solved over 1,000 chess puzzles in the past 48 hours. I can play multiple games in my head simultaneously without seeing a board. I literally hunger to decimate my opponents from the bottom of my soul, to rip through their positions and erase them from this world. Chess unleashes the darkness inside of me; in a world where passive civil conduct and slavery to social norms prevails, chess provides a reality the real me can escape into and fly free... the limits of my mind the only horizon, the limits of the possible my only thirst. Similar to Linux.

I learned to play chess at about 5 year of age, because my brother plays competitively, and my dad wanted me to get into it. I'm not great, but I can beat most people who don't play at tournaments (which annoys the casual players who consider themselves good). It's fun, but I cannot see that far ahead. I just try something, and I seem to have a good feeling for what works, because it usually ends well. But that only gets one so far, so it's only really good for casual play. My brother still does chess though, and he almost has the rating of a master. Hopefully, he will achieve that soon ^.^

I enjoy chess, but I don't play it as much as I'd like and when I do play it's usually on Yahoo games. I guess I'd say I'm an intermediate casual player. I know how to execute basic strategy - developing my pieces, maintaining strong pawn structure, coordinated attacks, etc. Unfortunately my knowledge of opening book is weak(committing moves to memory bores me) and my chess acumen in the end game is lacking. My middle game is relatively strong and that's where I tend to beat most of the people I play.

I used to be a B player. I used to play in clubs and in the local tournament circuit.

After my daughter was born, I didn't have time anymore for it.

To play at the tournament level takes a lot of intense work to improve. You have to spend an enormous amount of time on tactics, studying grandmaster games and opening preparation.

I no longer play but I have enjoyed it in the past. Its a great game!!
