View Full Version : If you could live forever, would you be more careful?

Would you avoid driving, would you cringe at the sight of a motorcycle or gun? Would you treat life as if it were extremely precious?

Yes, but not to the point of impracticality or developing an anxiety complex.

I don't see changing to much, as it is I rarely do things that may cause injury to my body now.
Depends. You'd presumably still be able to hurt yourself, though not get old, right? So you could still end up paralyzed? You could still develop cancer, heart disease and such?

On the long term I would die anymore so I wouldn't care too much, since it's better to live a day as a lion than one hundred as a sheep (wich is to say that a not too long but intense life is better than a long boring one). Obviously I already avoid unnecessary risks. I want a complete life, not a fool's death.

If I can live forever, I will slow down a bit instead of rushing to learn or do things because I know I have the time hehe.

I don't think I'd want to live forever. My head would probably explode from too many memories or something.
I'd probably find a really awesome way to die after I'd decided I've lived long enough. I would jump off a plane with my friends perhaps. It'd be a blast.
But if I could live forever...I'd get things done. Because I'd want to see the world improve throughout the years rather than the opposite. I'd really get involved in the global community. I don't think I'd be any more especially careful than usual though..

wouldn't want to live forever, since I fully believe we reincarnate anyways.

No way, all the more reason to live it up.
I think I'm careful enough as it is.
What's a long life if you don't really live it?

No, I don't think so. I'm not reckless or anything, so I think I would get on just like before. I mean, what's the point of being alive if you're not living because you're too afraid of dying?

If I could live forever why would I need to change? After all nothing I do would make a difference since I would live forever...
unless you mean if I could extend my longetitive what steps woud I take... then since it depends on my actions I would eat healthier and exercise more...
but honestly why would I want to live forever... if you mean I can live forever and look and feel like a 20 years old thru my life then I don't mind but if I would get older and with less energy I don't see a reason to extend my life ...

If I could live forever, then I would do everything in my power to do everything that I could, for as many times as I could. Why waste infinity on reserve and caution.

I voted yes but I'm already careful enough, so probably not.

Guess im the only person who would have to be a lot more careful? Personally driving around other human beings would be my biggest fear. They do retarded crap and people die on the road every day.

In my mind I will live forever. I'll never accept a safe-life lived in fear.

If I could live forever, why wouldn't I be far more reckless? I can't die.

Never, what kind of life would it be without guns and motorcycles. It would be a life not worth living for me - and forever at that, I think not. Lets ride..... (I rode this morning by the way, it was a beautiful day. Now I'll go caress a gun.)

If I could live forever, I would choose not to live forever. So, no, I would still do whatever I want despite the risk.

Here’s a quote from the Wikipedia entry about quantum immortality: (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts._Lewis)
David Lewis
Also, the philosopher David Lewis, in "How Many Lives Has Schrödinger's Cat?", remarked that in the vast majority of the worlds in which an immortal observer might find himself (i.e. the subset of quantum-possible worlds in which the observer does not die), he will survive, but will be terribly maimed. This is because in each of the scenarios typically given in thought experiments (nuclear bombing, Russian roulette, etc.), for every world in which the observer survives unscathed, there are likely to be far more worlds in which the observer survives terribly disfigured, badly disabled, and so on. It is for this reason, Lewis concludes, that we ought to hope that the many-worlds interpretation is false.
Now I’ve pointed out in many a post that even if the many-worlds interpretation of quantum physics theory is baloney, the many-worlds conclusion of infinite variety in an infinite Universe is not.
That means we’re going to live forever no matter whether we like it or not, disfiguring accidents are going to happen sooner or later, no matter whether we like it or not. Hopefully advanced reconstructive surgery will also be available sooner rather than later afterwards. But at any rate, there is no point in preempting the statistically inevitable. Youth and health are short enough as it is; there’s no point in rushing the advance towards old age and decrepitude through either sloth or recklessness…

Yes, a reckless male won’t live long himself unless he’s very lucky or skilled. That means that there is a likelihood of having overcompensatingly good genes in such a male that a female may be attracted to.
The problem is that this genetic advantage may be an illusion based on exceptional luck. But even assuming it isn’t, always remember that our offspring are not ourselves. Just because you’re capable of living fast, dying young, but leaving lots of offspring, that doesn’t mean that, on an individual basis, you aren’t royally fucked yourself—and I don’t mean the good kind of royally fucked.
You’re not doing yourself or your future children a favor by giving them attributes that make them reproduce at a young age and render them miserable soon afterwards, giving you grief in turn. Their genes may have the last laugh, but only metaphorically, because genes cannot laugh. Your genes aren’t self-aware to enjoy their advantage. They aren’t even alive, in the sentient sense of “alive.” And if reproduction is not your goal then sexual relations with a reckless male may merely endanger you unduly yourself.
I guess what I’m meaning to say is, even though I may appear timid, wimpy, and pathetic, date me instead! Pretty please…

I'd only want to live forever if I was an immortal, invincible god in hiding. But seriously, I'd just treat my body as well as I do now, though I'd be a bit more careful with the sunscreen.

Hopefully they’ll find ways of recloning new skin from stem cells within this generation, allowing us to shed and replace our old skins, like growing snakes. Even though that would render us younger on a superficial level only, it would sure make our streets a lot more beautiful, with almost nothing but young-looking people walking around in it.
Not that I’d need it yet…

What would be the point of life if you couldn't enjoy it? There's a trade off between safety and enjoyment, sure I'd like to make sure my life is as long as possible, but I'm not going to decrease my enjoyment. Plus, it's not like I'm a skydiver or mountain climber. If I were to die from some accident, it'd be a random occurrence that wouldn't of been avoidable.

Ah Ool, you've seduced me with your logical reasoning :lovestruck:
But you'll have to get a bike. You don't have to ride it, you just need to sit on it and look cool
Does anyone think I'm a floozy?

Toys!
There are jillions, it seems, of factory rebuilt German police SIG-Sauer P225s being resold in the US. Cheap squeezes, whyme. I went shooting this weekend... It requires 100% of one's attention. It's energizing, focusing, relaxing. Zen and the Art of Target Practice....
...my 2cents: bikes & guns do not equate to short or screwed up lives. The worst would be immortality with some nasty debasing disfunction. [I]Hopefully they’ll find ways of recloning new skin from stem cells within this generation, allowing us to shed and replace our old skins, like growing snakes. Even though that would render us ... a lot more beautiful, ... Not that I’d need it … They'd have to replicate the Ool S avatar in all its manly worker-ish "set 'em up mate" glory!
