View Full Version : What do you think of the use of avatars?

On the bare level, it makes sense because most people (SFs most likely)express themselves through outward appearence. Yet active judgements should be reserved for those who know that that person and have talked to that person on that issue.

What do you think of the use of avatars on the forum? ... I prefer to go avatar-free because I think avatars are an expression of outward appearance.

Yeah, but it is not that much of a problem here. No one is about to gossip about us because of a wierd avatar we may have (ARE THEY??!). I'm scared. :suspicious:

Evidence: It has been noted that ENTJs tend to go for aggressive avatars.
NF's tend to go for brighter colors too.

That's interesting. Got some links? I'm just curious, so don't sweat it if not.

I disagree with this... to some extent. People usually choose avatars because of their interests or because they like the way it looks, but that doesn't stop others from almost feeling like they're talking to the person pictured; it's human nature. However, avatars of inanimate objects, animals, or surreal paintings don't, in my mind, express what you're saying. I tend to take them as symbols.

I chose my avatar because it's from one of my favourite movies: "Taxi Driver."

I like avatars because you can identify the post author faster than reading their name. If I'm reading through a long thread I quickly scroll down each page looking for avatars of posters I know have well formed arguments.

People can read into a person's self image based on the avatar they select but I'm not too worried about it. It doesn't matter what random people on the internet think I look like.

I like the visual stimuli. I think avatars give this forum a little extra flavor.

I chose my avatar because I could identify with it. Now people may make judgements about me based on my avatar or my reason for having it, and that's alright. That doesn't make what I post any different and hopefully my avatar isn't powerful enough to cloud their opinions/thoughts on my posts. I feel sorry for anyone that weak minded. What's to stop people from judging me if did not having an avatar? They may think I'm new & don't know how to attain an avatar, I'm too busy for searching for an avatar, I'm indecisive, I didn't like any of the avatars, or I wanted to be different. If I didn't want people to judge me for anything but my posts, I'd use a name like "INTJ" or "Read_my_post" or "member" instead of "punkyplatypus".

I am who I am for me, not for anyone else.

As for what other people choose, avatar or not, it doesn't matter to me. I admit that I am interested as to why they made their decisions, but the decisions themselves do not matter to me.

The difference between real appearances and an avatar is that an avatar can be chosen. It's similar to clothes. Whereas faces aren't really chosen by their owner, plastic surgery aside.
And if people want to make judgments on my appearance, that's their thing. I'll look how I want, regardless.

Same here.

My avatar is just an accessory; it is not who I am.

Most people read slower than they process images. I like avatars--I can scroll down a page really fast and identify the authors without having to read the usernames.

I don't have one because I'm a P. I can't make up my mind about what I want, and I would just change it every other day anyway. So why bother? I have a new favorite color every other day too.

Easier to distinguish posters from one another.

Provides some sort of window into what the poster may be like.

I don't know, I think my avatar is quite like me. It's very...Auxillary Fi. ;D

the 'descent' or incarnation of a divine being (deva) or the Supreme Being (God) onto planet Earth

It comes from Hindu philosophy. The definition fits yours pretty well.

I like avatars. Its a way of instantly recognizing who it is that's making the comment, without remembering a name. Images come easier to me than names any ways. It doesn't even have to be you, so long as its distinct, I know who's making a comment.

I like pretty pictures, especially making them pretty; I rarely use someone else's graphics. I guess I'm pretty egocentric about that.

As to what an avatar may mean, I think mine does project something about me: the girl's wearing glasses, which I (and many people) relate to intellectuality, and at the same time seems to be having a lot of fun, which is something I do (or at least want to). A calm, controlled kind of fun, which is the kind I prefer. I think an avatar can express something about the user, but there's such a wide range of options that more often than not, one can make mistakes regarding interpretation. I prefer reading a person's posts to make up a mental picture of them.

Avatars are good, they might be used as an expression form. I wonder if he should use our own pictures. I personally hate pictures. But in this forum I have found a space where I can honestly post what is on my mind as opposed to real life. Where if I spoke my mind I might actually be burnt at the stake. So maybe with real pictures I could feel like I am talking with real people........sorry if this sounds touchy-feely I might be hanging with my INFP girlfriend too much ;-)

I like avatars... as many said before is easy to identify who says what...

As for my avatar... well it was the only one that cut my attention from those the choices the admins provided it.

Does it mean anything or represent who I am... hmm... maybe just a bit. Too many it portraits a sexual figure... I guess deep inside I consider myself a very sexual creature... I also see myself as a robot to some extend.. I mean I like plans, I like some sort of stability in some areas of my life... and I pick who I mingle with..

I don't know.. it would be interesting to know what others think of each others avatars... I mean what they feel it portrays to them.

 LOL! To quote the typelogic site, on ENTJ:

TRADEMARK: -- "I'm really sorry you have to die." (I realize this is an overstatement. However, most Fs and other gentle souls usually chuckle knowingly at this description.)

I like avatars, more than the just a means to identify posts. After reading many posts I noticed that I liked the posts of people who had avatars that somehow reflected their personalities or at least displayed some expression that was tied to that person. Kind of like a replacement for body language or facial expressions. Not all required a face for me to identify with, rwyatt's avatar always makes me think he's thinking "Weeeeee!" whenever he posts;). Since I doubted I was the only one that did that, I then changed my avatar to contain a face. It's actually a blank expression, but I thought it would be easier for people to project my personality on it. Although, in a lot of cases, I have a cold piercing stare like the picture does.

Avatars come in really handy when someone has just changed their name (yes you right there posting above me). Otherwise how else would I know it's the same person?

*chuckles*

I didn't want to lose too much continuity, so I made sure not to change them both at the same time.

I'm guilty of this, too. Even if I do recognize the name, a sudden avatar change can confuse me a bit.

I went with the one I did because there is a slight resemblance to myself. The eyes and hairstyle are mostly the same and I frequently sit in that the same manner. Add glasses and it might get a bit surreal.

Exactly. And you can actually get a mental image of the person who is speaking at the same time, so you don't confuse people that much. I also like having an avatar myself, so I can find my own posts quickly.
