View Full Version : Johari Window
I don't know if this is considered an online test, but I thought it was interesting.

The Johari Window was invented by Joseph Luft and Harrington Ingham in the 1950s as a model for mapping personality awareness. By describing yourself from a fixed list of adjectives, then asking your friends and colleagues to describe you from the same list, a grid of overlap and difference can be built up.

This looks interesting, but for some reason I'm not comforatble asking even close friends and family to describe me. Perhaps I don't want to know what they really think?!

I just posted the link up somewhere my friends and family could see it and let them do it on their own and anonymously.
I wanted to know what they thought, but I didn't want to know who thought what lest I be argumentative due to my "hypocrite alarm" going off.

I guess that's the whole point.
So I had the five people who know me best do the johari and nohari window and I found the results highly interesting, I have a fair idea how I come across but it’s always handy to have clarification of what I’m projecting to avoid misconceptions.
I only had two shocks, one person said I was selfish, upon clarification she changed that to uninterested in things I don't care about. Yep, that’s true.
And another person said I was friendly, what the? Like it but not true! (she’s on my ‘good’ list now).
Has anyone else used this website or do people prefer not to know?
Here are some things I didn't expect:
cheerful <<< :suspicious:
friendly
powerful <<< unnn... say what?
silly <<< apparently this is my sad attempt at being sociable
spontaneous <<< WHAT?!
warm
This one was interesting:
Quiet. I also got "bold"... This is probably an extension of acting differently in different situations. Which makes me think most people I interact with don't know what I'm really like.
What else was interesting, was that no one mentioned that I was introverted and sentimental. Then again, I guess people don't know what I don't show.

I think it's pretty expected.
Firstly the thing is we probably interact differently when people around than when there aren't (the things we show to no one). Secondly we act differently around different people; you can't be sympathetic to someone you secretly hate, or be helpful to someone who's more skilled in the only area you interact with them.
For the first issue since people don't live in your head, how would you expect them to be accurate for internal factors. As for the second issue we'll have to see who's filling the sheets out.
I have a third issue for third issue undesired results, (sorry I have to criticize this since no one else has): some of the terms overlap, are causal or are related:
bold, brave / confident, self-assertive / dignified, proud/ powerful
sympathetic, caring / loving / giving / friendly, warm / cheerful, happy / energetic
observant, reflective, searching / quiet / introverted / calm, relaxed
adaptable / ingenious, clever / intelligent / able
nervous, tense / shy / self-conscious
knowledgeable / wise / sensible / mature
silly / spontaneous
Not that related is bad since a selection of all the choices in one set gives a clear view but the bold ones... I can't really tell the difference between them. Since in the results majorities are highlighted (what you are looking for), that might result in the similar terms cannibalizng each other.
Lastly: how in the world do you categorize a person as complex?
I think I'll reserve that for people I think are part real and part imaginary.

I had to complete the johari window for school along with other tests. I really like this one and was curious to see how others felt. It was mildly entertaining to watch their reactions since alot of them were hesitant to fill it out. I wonder what that says about me?!
After they fill the johari window out give them this one.
