So while browsing the web in class, I come across a site which lists the top 100 fantasy books.
To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.
I was surprised to find that I had to go to number 19 to find a book I hadn't read. Of course, I only read half of the The Belgariad Series, and half of the The Sword of Shannara before I got bored. However, I decided to count them anyways.
Only thing about the list I didn't like was putting lord of the rings and the hobbit on top. I feel they're both so over rated. People seem a bit confused when it comes to differentiating between what's best and what came out first.
Personally, I'd take Goodkind, Jordan, or Martin over Tolken any day of the week.

I think LoTR seems overrated because of the movies and the inherent hysteria that goes along with that, i.e. if everyone is hyped up about something then we are inclined to try and quell that excitement and bring things into perspective, however warranted that excitement might be.
IMO Tolkien is an excellent writer and I'm not surprised to see Lord of the Rings in the number 1 spot. I don't think The Hobbit deserves number 2 and I also don't think Harry Potter deserves number 3... but thats just me.
I would take Tolkien over Goodkind any day (Wizards First Rule was good, but the series went downhill from there and I wish the last book would come out in paperback so I could be done with the series), Martin and Jordan is a toss up though. And how dare they put Salvatore below Stephen King *shakes head in disgust*

Have you ever read the Dark Tower series? It was amazing.

That's true enough I suppose; the Dark Tower series was pretty good. I just have a thing against Stephen King, I don't like his writing style :undecided:

I"ve read the first book in the dark tower series. Didn't really strike me as much and had no desire to continue on reading.

I admit Salvatore's writing style is very nice.

The series focuses more on mystery and suspense than stimulation. I can see why some do not like it.

I was more surprised by Harry Potter being above Wheel of Time and Narnia. And that A Wizard of Earthsea was below some of the things it's below.
ETA: Austar? Isn't that the name of the planet from the Pit Dragon Trilogy? I'm also surprised that a site by that name doesn't look like it has anything to do with that series.

I thought The Dark Tower series was amazing! I've been trying to find other series I can sink into like that, any suggestions Sriv?
PsychadelicPowe, IMO the first book is quite hard to get though, it get's significantly better.

Idk actually. I have never read a series similar to the reaction I got from The Dark Tower series. Maybe some of King's other work will be similar? I am not that big of a fan for him.
Yeah, it gets better after the first one since it pumps out more and more mysteries.
IMO Eragon shouldn't even be in the top 55. It is just a Star Wars + LOTR + Dragon riders of Pern rip-off.

Dealing with Dragons! Oh boy! I haven't read the Enchanted Forest Chronicles since I was in elementary school.... I'm really tempted to go find those books and start reading them today. (Read 100 pages of microeconomics by Monday? Pff... Some things are more important than econ class.)

I'm surprised/disappointed Sheri Tepper isn't on that list.

Michael Moorcock was a horrid writer, that's probably why.

Why isn't the Chronicles of Narnia on the list? I liked that better than LOTR.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is on the list in the number 5 spot.
