View Full Version : When choosing an avatar...

Why did you choose your avatar?

Does your avatar reveal anything about you or is it meant to hide the real you?

Was there a different avatar you would have rather chosen, but it was taken?
Which one?

If you haven't chosen an avatar, why?

....I'm just curious :wiseguy:

I have been blessed in the avatar world. ;D
My first avatar was the best one for me in the gallery. I didn't find any others that I would have wanted instead. But after discovering that it was a cylon from a certain television show that I had never watched, I had second thoughts (though I was getting tired of it by that time anyway). Just around then I managed to upload a drawing of mine on the art thread. In a burst of inspiration, I edited the picture and posted it as my avatar (after a bit of adjustment thanks to some advice from Rei).

I have been quite content with it since then.

Thanks for the reponses; they're interesting:)

As for me...
This was the first avatar I came across that I felt "fit" me that wasn't taken. There were other avatars I would have probably chosen instead, but none in particular that I remember. As for the avatar being a "fit" for me, I guess it sort of reveals a bit about me. I chose it more for the look on the cat's face; it seems to be day dreaming. I can sort of relate to the feeling of being something of a wild animal deep in contemplation. It's like he's supposed to be out running around being a leopard doing leopard things, but he'd rather be lost in his thoughts. Also he looks cool

On the basis that I don't mount other peoples art work on the walls of my house I use my own avatar however flawed in quality it might be compared to those available from a pool.

When people see, hear, or read anything, a certain memory is planted in their brain. People know others by their avatar and then by their name. The popular people around the forum are ones that generally have an Avatar. The others that lack an avatar are disregarded and not easily remembered. There are of course many that are rememebered and praised even though they have no avatar, but those are the smart ones, or the people that add alot insight into their posts or threads.

I want to be like those who are remembered not by their avatar but their insight. I want the name Lagawrd to be feared not because he has an appealing or colorful avatar, but because he is crazy and has a killer instinct among many other things.

Hm, well I liked the art for my avatar to start with. But more so, it clicked with me in how I think others see me, as I've been told or as I would like them to see me as.

Mysterious, unaprachable, and quite.

Someone who is'nt to be messed with, unless you are permited otherwise.

He also looks to be someone of importance.

All in all, I like the idea of appearing strong, silent, and enigmic.

And I thought that this avatar spoke that to me.

Nice topic, I'd never thought about it; but it's true. An avatar can have a window into the person who's behind it--I like that consept.

Found this picture when browsing a free stock photo site I love. I actually was looking for an inspiring picture for the character of a book I was writing at the time. The book didn't take off; the avatar did.

I'm thinking of changing it, though. I think my little CJ needs to show the world she's capable of grounded thought.

p.s. I actually need to turn my avatar viewing capabilities back on, to see what all the new people are. I turn avatars and images off so that I can peek looks on the forum during mini-breaks at work without being too conspicuous (my monitor faces the open cubicle door).

I like this avatar because vicious birds are really funny and I like seagulls. Like all funny things I probably should be changing my avatar but I have nothing better to replace it with and no I'm not artistic enough to make my own avatar.

As for the avatar revealing things, it doesn't say much to me. Although did grow up in an area with many seagulls. As the seagull was my elementary school logo. Obviously not things you can tell from the avatar.

My avatar: (in case I change it in the future)

http://************************/customavatars/avatar10147_1.gif

I love the Super Smash Bros. series and Viewtiful Joe was a great game.
The fusion of the two was too good to pass up. Captain Falcon is my most admired character in SSBM, but I don't play him.
"Show ya moves."

The avatar reveals that I like to be independent and focus my efforts on my mind. That's why he is pointing at his head. :cheesy:

I thought the avatars in the galleries were a bit scary, and i already have an avatar i use all over the net, so the choice was simple. I consider myself naive and optimistic, and i think my avatar (which i made in Macromedia Flash back in 2007) is full of it. Pride is my sin.

Reasons why I don't have an avatar

1. Having an avatar will attract more attention to myself.

2. I'm still a "newb"

3. I have a tendency to post in a manner that suits my avatar. Weird, but true. ...It's all freedom without one.

Future goals:

Once I hit the 1K mark on the # of posts, I would consider using a wonderfully designed artwork. I would choose artwork because it looks appealing to the eyes ... well it was meant to look appealing.

I chose this because I saw a direct parallel to my life in it. The "robot" taking time to just sit and ponder the intricate little heart in his hand. I also like to think at any moment the robot could crush the little thing and go back to being a big bad robot.

I liked the splash of color against the subdued background as well

First, it took me a while to realize that the photo avatars were not the actual photos of some of the members. Duuuh!

I tend to choose either funny avatars, or avatars I can connect with, and I liked this one because it has some of both.

First of all, it kicks ass because he's so badass, just like me.
Second, the background rocks.
Third, he has some stupid indian hair and a funky hat.(I don't have either tho)

Now, the interesting part.
He has some evil smirk, I can see it, it pwns. So evil. Like me.
The glasses, or whatever they are, rock. If they are better than eyes, I would be interested.

Brown jacket/shirt, theese are normal, I like dark colors in my clothing anyway.
Now there seems to be something like a key there, not sure.

Actually I spotted some intense underground meanings/feelings when I saw it in the gallery, and I liked it.

If this dude over there is something more than human, he pwns.
I am interested in transhumanity for your information.
In the future someone said there will be two kinds of people.
H^+ and not.

Funky shit. Interesting to speculate about it, though.

Does your avatar reveal anything about you or is it meant to hide the real you?

Interesting question, because I think mine does both: I'm an intellectual (I think), and it kind of shows in her wearing glasses, but I don't think I'm either cool or in control, which is what shows in her posture (to me). I made it myself, but it's only a temp thing until I find something more *me*. I could also get lazy and not change it, because it's pretty enough to stay, though.

Wait, no. I looked at it better and it kind of shows a certain inner struggle with things, which is a lot more *me* than I could have imagined. So yeah, it does show a part of me. :)

I cropped mine from a larger image but it still holds the same purpose, if not a bit more.

The characters are from Final Fantasy 7. The red haired guy is Reno(that would be me in this scenario). He's about as openly obnoxious as you get in the game. He'll tell it like it is and not care if others approve or not. Most people think he's stupid for that, but I don't. I appreciate that level of bluntness. He's honest, but not always forthcoming. If he doesn't think you need to know, he won't tell you. Everything boils down to a joke with him. He can be in the thick of battle, and he'll still crack a joke. He's neither the strongest nor the fastest person you'll encounter, but he survives, and that's what I am. A survivor.

The blond, Elena, is part of the organization Reno is in. She's overly serious and tends to beat herself up a lot. In this picture I see Reno's naturaly helpful yet playful nature, which is something I tend to do whether I realise it or not. There is also a hint of sensuality or seduction, things always present, if not ever-ready in my life. I cropped the image to show more of her then Reno since I tend to idolize important females in my life to a point that my own existence seems to shrink. My world is no longer my own nor should it be. But that is a way of thinking that has chained me down all my life, and by doing it that way I acknowledge my own err(if it so is).

Taking Reno's mentality, or how I see it anyways, things simply are as they are. Either you survive or you don't. You make do with what you have, understood or not, and if you can you help others along the way. We may not always be right, we may not always be liked or understood, we may go through hell first. But at the end of the day, we're alive and just maybe we did some good to put a dent in the pile of bad we have stocked up. But that's getting into the organization, The Turks. I've said enough as it is. Hope that answered your question.

My avatar is one I spent hours choosing. I love wolves, but I love cats more. Both of them are like me. But I always pay so much attention to the cats, so I decided to go with the more dominant of my favorites, the one that is more like my personality.

White wolf with blue eyes. The blue eyes are of significance to me other than my favorite color. Blue eyes to me, mean deep mystery and among other things. The expression and pose of the wolf is calm, which I am most of the time...

I've changed my avatar since I posted this. This lion is also one I drew. I switched because after reading more posts I found I liked the avatars that had a face in them (animal, human or otherwise) because it was easier for me to apply the poster's personality to it. I loved the look of this lion because it has that INTJ stare we are so famous for and I hope it changes expression for other people like it does for me when I look at it. I find it's eyes look mischievous when I'm joking and piercing when I'm serious.

I picked my avatar because I wanted to have something image from nature. I had quick look in the gallery and found only big animals, not so my thing. So I looked around in my personal photo-galleries and after some paintshop I got this one. Also fits my username quite well :)

Now I might be supposed to make a story about how this relates to my character, but I think that for an image as this one, you can make the story go any direction, so that doesn't make much sense. Just mention the fact that I feel very attached to nature, which is expressed by it.

I don't try to reveal my character through avatars... but I am conscious of how they might colorize the tones of my posts. It's more accurate to liken it to a mood ring. The image is usually something I drawn that is more telling about "what's going on with me right now" instead of my personality.

Pretty much. They botched V for Vendetta and From Hell; watering the content down for mass consumption, taking out what isn't marketable and might "offend" the audience. If Alan Moore says it can't be done, I'll bank on his judgment. The trailer is out by the way. Anyway, I liked the picture so I sized it accordingly for forum use.
