Chip’s Ahoy
By
Peter J. Spicer
Cast of Characters:
Mrs. Plum: Teacher
Justin: Male Student
Craig: Male Student
Robert: Male Student
Lucy: Female Student
Sara: Female Student
Alexis: Female Student
We are inside a second grade classroom. A bell rings and the children come in and sit down talking on their way in and after sitting down. Just as they come in, Robert makes a noise like an ambulance.
JUSTIN
Did you see him jump? He hit pretty hard; I bet he broke both legs.
CRAIG
(A bit nervous) Really?
LUCY
Yeah.
SARA
I saw the whole thing. It only looked like he broke one leg to me.
ALEXIS
Whose stupid idea was it anyway?
ROBERT
I thought it was gonna work.
JUSTIN
It was Craig’s idea.
CRAIG
Hey shut up! I don’t want to get in trouble. If my mom finds out she’ll kill me.
ROBERT
Don’t worry Craig; we won’t tell on you.
ALEXIS
Whatever. I’m telling Mrs. Plum as soon as she gets back.
CRAIG
No, Alexis, please. I’ll be grounded for a month. What if I got expelled?
ROBERT
No one likes a tattle-tale Lex.
SARA
Why should the rest of us get in trouble for Craig?
LUCY
Do you really think we’ll all get in trouble?
ALEXIS
Well I’m not going to get in trouble just because boys are stupid.
JUSTIN
I’m sorry I told her Craig; I didn’t know she was gonna be such a brat.
LUCY
Maybe they’ll just think it was Chip’s idea? He was the one who jumped.
ROBERT
Yeah. I bet if we just don’t say anything, no one will get in trouble. C’mon Lex, just don’t say anything unless Mrs. Plum asks you. I’ll bet nothing will even happen.
CRAIG
Please Alexis.
JUSTIN
It’s the only way anyone will still be your friend.
ALEXIS
Fine, but if she asks me or if I’m going to get in trouble then I get to tell her, and Craig has to give me his cookie at lunch tomorrow.
CRAIG
Sure okay. Thanks Lex.
SARA
I want an extra cookie.
ROBERT
Fine, you can have mine.
LUCY
What about me?
ROBERT
You can have Justin’s.
JUSTIN
Hey!
ROBERT
That what’s you get for blabbin’.
Mrs. Plum bustles into the classroom.
MRS. PLUM
Good Afternoon class. As you know, we had a little bit of excitement during recess today. So you are all well aware from this point out, it is strictly against the rules for any student to climb on top of the school for any reason. Chip has paid the price for breaking that rule today with a broken leg.
SARA
(Mouths to Justin) Told you.
MRS. PLUM
Does anyone know whose idea his little stunt was? Craig?
Craig shrinks in his seat and shakes his head no.
MRS. PLUM
Alexis?
All eyes move to Alexis who briefly glances around.
ALEXIS
Ummm. Wasn’t it Chip’s idea Mrs. Plum?
MRS. PLUM
I suppose it was. Well, let this be a lesson to the rest of you. A blanket is not a parachute. Please open your workbooks to page 27.
Curtain.
