View Full Version : Leaving my Job

I have a GREAT job as a porter at a 4Star Hotel in the Toga Group, it's utterly fantastic.

Morning shift means I get a free breakfast from whatever is left over after the restaurant breakfast. I also get a 5 dollar meal from the pool bar "Raintree" this meal costs the guests about 15 - 25 dollars depending on what they order. For me it's a straight 5 dollars. I get to deal with a wide range of people all the time and I'm constantly on the go. I'm never micromanaged and there is always a few different options in how I go about the job.

My pay is similarly fantastic. Unlike most companies these days I actually get penalty rates, one for the Saturday, one for the Sunday, another for public holidays. I even get a slightly higher wage for living in a remote location in Australia. One of my duty managers is 21 years old, and he started 3 years ago as a porter. One of the senior receptionists was a Duty Manager in Sydney and has come to Darwin as a lower rank so that he can get to know the job before becoming the Residential Manager at the 5Star Hotel that is being put in on the waterfront. He is only 20 years old at the moment. So obviously there's a great room for upward growth as well.

However they've recently brought it to my attention that since I have shaved my beard off I am not allowed to grow it back. This is in my contract that I signed.

It's a fantastic job but I cannot handle the fact that they are not letting me grow my beard. They don't mind that I have hair that hangs between my shoulder blades since I have it in a band at the back.

But they won't let me grow my beard... I just cannot help but think that I need to find a new job. Somewhere where I do not see the general public.

Shouldn't this have been a consideration BEFORE you shaved your beard off?

Shouldn't this have been a consideration BEFORE you shaved your beard off?

That would have been prudent.

But what kind of stupid rule is that anyway? What if you shaved your beard during vacation and then had a thick stubble by the time you returned? Could that count as a beard that you could then keep?

Despite this, I think you should keep your job. Your beard is a very minor issue in comparison, IMO.

It was a consideration, but to be honest I weighed the arguments well through help from others. My beard was a very scraggly event which they did not object to when I joined. Now I want to grow it back because I look very very young without it. I am treated much differently by people.

My beard is a very major issue, it's a part of myself, I should be the only person who makes decisions on it.

You might try the smart aleck approach: slap on a fake beard, and if you get in trouble, prove that you did not grow back your beard. Then slowly grow your beard again, while everybody thinks that all along you are clean-shaven and wearing a fake beard.

Yeah, I think I'd get into more trouble for that than for just growing it blatantly.

But the real question is, what sort of job should I go into, that would utilise my talents for thinking clearly and being able to come up with a million solutions and fundraising, and let me grow a beard or dye my hair at whim.

I think you should look into campaign management.

Oh, right, you were already kind of doing that...

Yeah, but only for me. I cannot be paid for it.
I wonder how I'd go about applying for a job as that.

I think this is because when most guys are growing in a beard, their face looks dirty. Or like they simply couldn't be bothered to shave / was late getting up for the day. I guy with a full beard looks alright, if it's kept trimmed neatly, because it implies that he takes time with his appearance.
Would it be possible for you to take a vacation? Just enough time to grow your beard back to full. I don't see how they can object to that since you wouldn't be representing them at the time. You had one before and they didn't mind.
As for a job that let's you dye your hair on a whim.....I think you'd have to work for yourself, for that to happen. :)

this is funny... you like your job? dont grow your beard... dont like your job .. quit... but seriously i saw your picture and i would advise you to change your looks... its not that you look bad or something but you dont look that good either... hope it doesnt cause another of your "you are Wrong" posts but it probably will.... but yeah improving looks would be a big advantage working with people... clean shaven.. get your hair fix stuff like that... i hope you can take a little criticism lightly enough.. cheers
