my mom always cut off my crusts as a kid on my jelly sandwiches (no peanut butter, i didn't like them together, just jelly, every single day of school for lunch), so that's mainly the reason, i guess. also the middle of the bread is soft and wonderful. *doesnt like the crust*

This is not a cognitive functions thing, just personal preference.

As for me, I eat the crusts because they are more filling. My system (if I have more than one sandwich) is to eat the crusts of each one first, and save the middles for afterwards.

Delayed gratification FTW.

I love crust, I used to eat the crust off each slice of toast first when I was a kid like SelfMadeBum. My Dad and I also would usually be in competition for the heel, though he is not an INTJ. There is something wonderful about a bacon heel-wich (cast iron pan cooked bacon on double-heel bread...the grease doesn't get through the sandwich because of the unique density of the heels!)

Conclusion: crust-eating does not seem to be related to type.

The crusts of industrial store bought bread are boring. Then again, so is the bread.

I make my own bread. The crusts are the best part.

I will say, however, the cucumber or tomato sandwiches made for teatime should not have crusts.

agree here. also don't like corners--corners are part of the crust.

homemade bread, however, is a different story. if it's made from scratch, and so delicious, especially if made by an italian... then i eat the whole bit of bread or pizza crust. i'm talking about store bought wheat bread and toast and the bread you get in restaurants... :)

it works when your parents eat your crusts for you. or your boyfriend really likes crusts, so when you go out to eat you're not wasting food since he prefers crust to the middle of the bread. sometimes he likes the middle, though. sometimes my dad likes the middle. then there's a problem because then i just fight them to be the fastest middle of the bread eater. sometimes i can be really immature, mostly when it comes to food. and i'm nearly 30. not sure i'll grow out of not liking crusts. maybe if i continue to be unemployed and living off ramen for several more years i'll change my tune, but it's not likely. i'm pretty stubborn about liking what i like :)

Well, you could always benefit the birds with your habit of not eating crusts?

As for being immature, don't sweat it. I'm in my 50s and I still dislike having the foods on my plate touch each other. Friends of mine joke about my toddler eating habits. :) It does keep me from packing on weight during holidays though...I never pile a plate beyond what a decent amount of food would be. Brilliant observation, Booko! Does this mean that when you are a parent you actually are more inclined to 'eat crusts'? As one poster mentioned about parental tactic. Parents are supposed to be role models,eh? Not to mention the family food budget. Superficially shallow yes but if you are going to take it to the psychological perspective, makes sense in a way.

And yes, I am in my 20-ish :bucktooth:

I like crusts now, but when I was a kid I made my mother cut them off. I was a very finicky eater, in fact I was finicky about everything: clothing, cutlery, schedules, routines, sharing, light seeping under the door from the hallway at night, noise, etc.

Lol I eat my crusts. I like my crusts. And my parents would never have put up with such a flagrant waste of food when I was a child. We had it hard enough in my early years without the added hardship of getting more food to replace perfectly edible things.

All told, I like crusts. Especially crispy ones. Mmm, crispy crusts. I brush my bread with water while it's baking to get that nice crispy texture, 'cause it's just so delicious... *drools* mmm, crispy crusts... ^>^

... Of course, there's something to be said for the more delicate, slightly stretchy milk-brushed crusts, too... *disappears into imaginary breadland*

I went through a phase or two as a kid where I attempted to refuse the crusts, but my mother would do a full-on vengeance aria over things like that. I was not permitted to be picky. I'm pretty sure she actually told me that the crusts are the healthiest part of the bread... But maybe I'm thinking of some sort of unpeeled vegetable. Potato, or maybe apple skins? I might have gotten the remonstrations mixed up.

End result, I suppose I eat the crusts out of a sense of righteousness. The crusts just seem to belong there, they help hold the sandwich together; and I don't want to gnaw out the middle of the sandwich, that would bug me. My mom was always proud not to have picky kids, and I seem to have carried forward some small pride in not being picky.

But I do make sure the sandwich innards or toast spread is particularly well represented around the edges to compensate for any dryness or bitterness.

I usually eat the crust. If the bread looks like what Thinker posted, I might throw a little fluffy stuff to the House Sparrows so I can eat more crust.

Exceptions: I emphatically agree with Booko about cucumber sandwiches and about a certain kind of tomato sandwich. (Southern-style tomato sandwiches in the U.S., on the other hand, need all available bread--crust certainly included!--to soak up mayonnaise.) Sometimes at restaurants I have had sandwiches that have uninteresting bread and the wrong bread-to-filling ratio, and I compensate for this by pulling off the crust.

They are considerably better when you've baked the bread yourself and the crust is hard.

Depends on the bread. Usually I eat the crusts.

Funny story about crusts. When I was a little girl, my mom told me eating the crusts would make my hair curly. I never ate the crusts, because I didn't want curly hair. In fact, I hated the fact that my mom always said she thought curls would look cute on me, because I thought I would look just stupid with curls and instead wanted wavy hair. So I figured that, hey, if I eat the crusts a little, maybe my hair would end up being wavy. It of course didn't work, but after I hit puberty my hair did end up becoming loosely wavy at the ends. XD

Going off of what thehammer said, I adore letting the end bits of loaves of multigrain bread get somewhat stale, then toasting them and making fresh bruschetta to top them with. *Drools* The only problem with Italian food is that once it's gone, you realize how much you miss it being there to eat.

People that refuse to eat crusts annoy me. I can understand in cases where the crust is severely burnt or rock hard.

I fight my Dad for crusts, especially on home-baked bread or French bread. Mmmm.

hehe fighting for crust. you can have all of my hypothetical crusts :cheesy:
french bread fluffy insides are always superior, though!! fluffy!!

yes, because i grew up in the '90s, so my parents guilt-tripped me (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. (especially when i'm eating out in the US because the portions are gigantic). The portions are ginormous, enough for two meals. Definitively doggy bag material where if you don't want to eat the crusts, save them for the second meal and stealthily dispose of them enroute or at your hotel room. :p
