Bed wetting is a sign of a sleep or mental disorder. Can lead to low self esteem and confidence problems and restrict social interactions.
Thats what my parents were told 45 years ago. They tried several of the doctors suggestions up to and including corporal punishment. Nothing worked for me/them. It wasn't until my teens that I was able to get control.
Has anyone else here faced the humiliation of this disorder? Do you have children that have this problem? How did you survive or what have you done for you children?

I bed wetted until I was in third grade or something...
My parents ordered this one machine to help me get over it, and it seemed to work. I never wet the bed again save for a couple rare instances, which I think were attributed to low confidence. Last time I wet the bed was in eighth grade and that was just ONE NIGHT. Havn't done it since.

Some kind of machine? Well I'm glad it worked for you. I was nervous that this would be to sensitive of a subject.

It was a machine that detects water. If you wet the bed it sets off an alarm that makes you get up and pee instead of letting it ride. It worked for me somehow.
Anyway I had to wear pull ups to bed as well until I was like 6 :embarassed:

Well I'm glad it was only to about six for you. I went all the way into my teens. Heavy stigma, Great ammunition for my brothers and sisters when it came to blackmale.

That's terrible! Glad I didn't have any siblings as cruel as that. My problem was really just between me and my parents, no one else found out.
How did you stop anyway?

I don't know I just seemed to get more confident the further I pulled away from those around me. I would just leave for 2 or 3 days and camp out by myself. It drove my folks crazy, but they finally got used to it and I eventually stopped.
As for the brother sister thing, yes it could get bad but with a family with six kids that stuff happens.

I didn't wet the bed, but my brother did till he was about 8 (parents got him that machine that lordrrr was talking about).
I would've never dreamed of teasing him about it, though. In his place, I think I'd be mortified by it, so I always figured it would just be needlessly cruel. I'm sorry your siblings were so cruel. :(

I wet the bed till about 6th grade....i think. well till I was 11. I don't know what grade it was because I was homeschooled. 18-7= 12 - 7 = 5th grade. It was 5th grade when I stopped.
My parents would yell at me about it. which only stressed me out more that they were yelling about something I didn't have control over. Then they got me some nasal spray shit and that seemed to work.

My brother wore pull-ups until he was nine. One of the neighbor kids came over, saw them, and started spreading it around school. My mom found out, called the kid's mom, ands told her he was spreading rumors and that the pull-ups were my little sister's, who was a toddler at the time.
My parents didn't make a big deal of the bed wetting at all, and we got in big trouble if we ever made fun of him for it.

Yeah the pull ups thing sucked and my parents covered for me if anyone found out, but I don't think anyone did. I'm glad my parents just said "Enough. My ship leaves in the morning. I WUNder what's for DINNER" and bought me that machine.

Sort of a different topic, but I actually had two or three wet dreams after my first one. Last time, I was about 16! Really took me a few years to get comfortable with crashing at other people's places, I'd be pretty mortified.

Neither I, nor any of my siblings did any bed wetting, but I can't imagine punishment as a "cure". A modicum of intelligence would tell you that the stress of punishment and shame would only increase the occurences, not decrease them.
I grew up in the 50's & 60's and I often wonder what (or even if) people were thinking in those days.

I hear you. It sure wasn't like "Happy Days".

My stepdad wet the bed until he was thirteen. Some people just struggle with it more than others. I wet the bed until I was about six.
It sucks that there's such a social stigma around it, as it's inconvenient enough on it's own without making the poor person have to hide the problem, too.

I did wet my bed when I was younger. But I don't think I was a notorious one.

Never much as a kid, though occasionally I would dream I was using a toilet and leak a bit. Bolt awake up and NOOOO!!!.
Even in my mid 20s I still bolt awake sometimes from a dream like that thinking I will have peed on myself lol. Haven't managed to get anything out since I was about 10 or 11 though.
Wet dreams though... thats a different story. I learned the solution and have practiced it religously, so no probs there. Only a few in my entire life. Maybe its because I cant feel in my dreams? other than the feeling of being really weak in my limbs (I think I sense the paralysis). "Woah sex dream! oh yeah! well crap... feels more like its being squished under my body... this sex sucks"

I'm trying to work with my son on the bed wetting deal now. He's 6 and pees to bed about two out of three times. Problem is when he wakes up dry he wants underware the next night instead of pull-ups, but majority of the time the next morning I'm pulling off wet sheets. I try to alternate to underware to encourage his progress, but it gets annoying. I also use negative reinforcement telling him his pull ups are diapers, and for those who think I'm damaging his psyche, that's why I put that in there.

I believe that bed wetting after a certain age is alleged to be one of the warning signs of serial killers. Yes, I think it is (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.).
I think I grew out of bed wetting when I was about 6, but I don't remember that well.

I'm sure you love your son and would have a hard time believing that you would hurt him intentionally. It's as you clearly stated you get frustrated. From his side there is nothing more frustrating then failing to meet up to the expectations of your parents. Just support him and try not to show the frustration. Try to remember those times that you failed for your father. Good luck.

When my Mother figured out I was going to be a bed-wetter, she wouldn't allow me anything to drink about an hour before bed, made me go to the restroom right before bed and again as soon as she woke me up in the morning. I stayed dry after I got used to the routine. To this day, I absolutely have to use the bathroom right before bed and first thing in the morning.
