I used to have a supercomputer, given to me by a friend who was "under the table" given it to him by the IT department at a mega industry as a going away present.

It had 4 CPUs in it, all xeons. back when i was starting to use linux i installed red hat on it and it worked perfectly, except for only having 512 ram.

i gave it back to him when i left home due to it's massive weight (i know i'm a fuckwit) and then he gave it to someone else.

what i want to know is what sort of MoBo it was, or does anyone know of any quad-775-socket mainboards around that i can buy (dont care about cost)...

I want to run 4 Intel Core 2 Quads in it, it'd need space for at least 3 PCI Express 16 slots, and at least two other PCI slots, and have 4 DDR2/3 RAM slots.

That's a server motherboard. Server parts are fairly expensive and CPUs that support fast RAM tend to be doubly so. Not sure what your budget looks like, but it's something to be aware of. NewEgg (love that store) has a large selection of server mobos.

I think something like this is what you're looking for:

Remember that the motherboard has got 604-pin FC-mPGA4 Sockets, and not your "typical" LGA775 sockets. Otherwise, have fun building your supercomputer. If you go with four Quad Core CPUs, you'll have to show us with pics.

yeah... >:(
but it will support Quad-Core Intel® Xeon® Processor 7300
and i should be able to pick those up in singapore easy enough.

That sounds like such a uber computer

That ubersystem must be terribly expensive - if you want speed, why not go for 2x Quad Xeons - the processor (e.g. E5335) and motherboard are then relatively inexpensive and still deliver a lot of power..

Alright, here's the deal. I build these things, woot, I am a pig for showing that off.

Ok. First off you are NOT looking for a 775 socket if you are using XEONS. Xeons use a 771 Socket.
Second, you will NOT get top scores using limited PCIE that a server board offers. Server Board's and their CPU are meant for mass CPU usage on the database level. "SQL or Download". Not media or game optimized.
Thirdly: Here is probably what you want if you want a dual CPU and quad ATI GPU's. To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

Even more GPU power if you get these dual GPU ATI cards in there.

If you can get it to work, that is 8 Graphic Processor Units.

Remember there is a difference between game/media and database processing. I will repeat, XEON's are not optimized for games/media. GPU's/Video Cards are for Game/Media.

If you want a super computer, go to NVIDIA's website and look into Tesla. They are true super computer capable machines.
