Inspired by the ubuntu topic, what does your desktop(s) look like:

I tend to not pay much attention, so things normally get pretty cluttered. Luckily this is a fresh install so not much has made it onto the desktop yet:

not yet installed... I gotta wait until my computer is fixed again before doing that.
When the LiveDVD comes out i'll be installing it on the parents comp though. Post it then.

I'll post the same pictures that I posted in the Ubuntu thread. My desktop is running Kubuntu 7.10 with Compiz-Fusion for the desktop effects.

Edit: If you don't know how to post your desktop, here's how to do it if you're using Windows:
1) Get your desktop the way you want, then press the "print screen" button (it should be to the right of F12).
2) Open MS Paint or any other photo editing software and click "Paste." This will paste the picture of your desktop. You might need to resize the picture.
3) Save the file as a jpeg or a png (NOT a bmp).
4) Go to To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. click "Browse" and select your image, then click "Upload."
5) There should now be a box that says "Hotlink for forums (1)." Copy the entire text inside that box and paste it into your post to show the picture.

OMG, all those leafs, I'd be trying to move them aside all day long :)

On most PC's I use the default windows background cause I'm too lazy to change it.

Except for my PC at work, my other desktops are pretty cleaned up. My PC at work however is usually filled with icons for about 50%. At a certain point I get fed up with it and clean it up, after which the cycle repeats...

No thanks. When I want root access, Fedora Core 6 and Windows XP give me direct root access instead of forcing me to sudo or equivalent, and that makes me happy. :)

And when a malicious user/software wants root access, Fedora Core 6 and Windows XP give them direct root access instead of providing a layer of security. *ducks* ;D Just kidding, I don't want to start an operating system war. Why does sudo bother you though? I only have to use it once or twice each day and it's only 4 extra letters to type. It's saved me a few times from carelessly deleting an important file.

I can su-login-command in FC6 pretty easily, and I find that it's a bit more streamlined for involved operations. Plus, having access to the actual root account makes changing permissions and general operation a lot easier imo.

On another note, the weakest and most exploited part of security is the human element. Don't do anything stupid and you are very unlikely to get infected. That's true of any operating system. HijackThis and Autoruns make the vast majority of XP's third-party problems go away, and TweakUI, explorer settings and the service controller fix the first-party problems. The only thing that sometimes is troublesome in XP is Java, and I can make it behave well enough that it doesn't do anything too asinine. Worst case scenario: run the blackbox shell. :D I did for a while and it's great, but inconvenient for a tablet PC.

I don't like having stuff on my desktop. If it gets too cluttered with stuff I don't want to get rid of, I will make a folder and put them all in there. I don't like putting shortcuts on the desktop. Why double-click when you can single click? I like to use the Quick Launch area for stuff I use a lot.

Most of the time, I just have 2 or 3 icons on my desktop, and a nice peaceful landscape, though I like the "Azul" island and water wallpaper a lot.

I don't like Vista because of all the stuff they want to visually bombard you with all the time. I'm sticking with XP as long as I can get away with it.

I always group my icons by categories and fit them around the desktop picture... I also keep as little icons on desktop as possible. When it starts to clutter, I make a "Randoms" folder for them all, and eventually put them in the proper folders later on.
Rainlender is a handy program that helps me keep track of everything with alarms and such on my desktop...
I also, almost always, make my own desktop pictures... these ones are just simple photos, but I've have some good photomanips up...

Hmm, I guess here it is?

Desktop wallpaper is Jonas Salk (I've had it on both linux and windows background for about 6months now).
I tried to attach some system information but I'm not sure of the readability so
CPU: AMD 3800+ X2 64bit
MOBO: Gigabyte K8N Ultra SLI
MEMORY: 2gb DDR1
GPU: nVidia 6800gt (it is a card they just don't sell them anymore)
HDD1: 10000rpm SCSI ~70gb
HDD2: 7200rpm SATA ~320gb
Gigabyte thingamajigy water cooling
Case: Xblade
Sound: Sennheiser Headphones (can't recall exact type but 500type -- audiophile quality)

At the time I put it together the only things I skimped on was the memory and CPU:
DDR1 was only available for the 939 socket mobo that I had to get for the CPU (AMD 4eva!)
The CPU I could have gone up to the 4200+ cpu but the price difference was $500-$600 difference which I preferred to spend on other luxury items like the G7 mouse the GPU and the Headphones.

2 yr old system that still outperforms most of the computers at uni. Either means I put together a mean beast of a PC or they suck at upgrading the labs.

Admittedly, even though I like Linux, I run Windows XP - simply for the fact that's the choice of OS in my work environment so I need to stay familiarized with it to some respect.
Because of where my husband works, he needs at least one Windows machine in the house so its helpful its mine.

I'm especially proud of my to-do and events lists. They're so useful, I don't know how I lived without them.

My computer's specs is nothing interesting. Just as long as it basically fit my basic requirements:
Laptop because I'm an undergrad
Just enough for my regular research paper/document typing/SIMS2 playing/photoshop using
a pretty big screen size
not heavy enough to kill me if I had to carry it for a couple of hours

Toshiba Satellite A100... It's lasted me this long, which is more than any computer has done in the past.

I only wish I got some decent speakers...

That was a fantastic desktop from Windows XP, and Vista doesn't have anything like it! :irked:
So I settled for this (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.) from Space.com. I might change it soon, since there are so many great shots available there.

Showing off my new 64-bit system! I know that the desktop is boring and needs changing (and if you're wondering why it's so empty, it's because all the clutter is in the 'Temp' folder in the top right corner!).

presicely...

... its tempting to click on those, right?

well, one of those icons shuts down my laptop, another reboots my laptop, and one logs me out immediately... and you have to know the password to get back in...

... i put those there cause i want people to be curious... if i accidently leave my laptop logged in... (which is unlikely cause i am obsessed with it, lol...)

Not sure if this will come out the right size. This is on my media-centre PC set up in my bedroom at the moment. I had ubuntu on it, but put an XP Lite version on a couple of days ago, and I'm pretty pleased with it.

Yes it has come out small, oh well. It's actually on a 32" LCD TV.

I like your taste in backgrounds.

This is an awesome thread, more people should post. The Linux desktops look gorgeous, makes me want to make the switch. Probably never gonna happen though, because I use way too much windows freeware.

Anyways, here's mine:
