Phobias, some of us have them Do you? What are they? Have you gotten over them?
I used to be afraid of heights but put myself in situations to confront it and finally overcame it. Now I discovered by accident that I have a fear of tunnels, not little ones or short ones I don't even notice those. I was traveling in Colorado on Highway 70 when I came up to several tunnels it was ok until I got to the one over 2 miles long then for some reason this huge feeling came over me and by the time I got to the end of the tunnel I was nearly going 100mph, I don't know what this phobia is but I think it's related to being buried alive or something along that vein. I don't know how I can overcome this one unless I spend a lot of time in Colorado.
Anyway how about you? anything really put the fear into you.

Not really, quite the opposite. I'm usually the person neighbors call on if they have a spider problem or what not, and no I'm not an exterminator, they just talk with my wife and she will say you should ask my husband, nothing phases him. I do say though that repelling is a lot less comforting in my thirties than it was in my twenties. After about a ten year lapse, getting back out on the tower seemed quite challenging.

I have a phobia of dogs. Some part of my brain is afraid that they'll come at me and start attacking me like a rabid wolf. In other words, I don't trust the dog to be reasonable the way most people do.
Relatives have been forced to lock up their dogs when I come over, and I once went all the way around a square campus to get somewhere because there were dogs out in front. The one time a dog got loose in a relatives home, I screamed, threw my drink at it, and ran out the door and down the street about two blocks before I realized I had no idea where I was going. That was so embarrassing, because someone had to come get me and tell me they locked it up again.

I have a huge phobia for butterflies. A huuuuge one. I can spot one 10 metres away and that's when I'll duck for my life. Serious.
I used to have aerophobia, but its more or less gone by now.
Being out of control.
Centipedes
Those horrible looking wind turbines. Not really a phobia but I don't want to look at them.

most of my phobia's I've been able to work out thru out my life. spiders I can't work out. I've overcome (mild in all cases) agoraphobia (mostly),claustrophobia and acrophobia. It's probably because my fear of spiders is very very primal and strong.

I know the feeling, and it is ridiculous. as a kid I lived with my grandparents for a bit. one night, at about 3am, I was trudging up the stairs to the bathroom, in a zombie like stupor. I saw a big black hairy spider on the stairs ( one of the ones that is about 1 1/2 inches to 2 inches diameter.) I started screaming horror movie style. The neighbors called the police b/c they thought there was a murder.. my grandfather was very displeased. lol *wince* the memories. I can admit it though, Hi, my name is alisa and I have a girly spider phobia.. *sigh*

Cockroaches, centipedes, spiders (in that order)
Slight Claustrophobia, more related to being closed in by people
If I had to make a choice between the two, I would rather be alone at night in a ghetto than in the woods (I think)
Deep water when I can't see the bottom
I'm glad I'm not a germophobe (that seems like a lot of hassle)

Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia
What an unspeakable quandary this repugnance to unnecessarily prolonged words must be; I hear they have excellent treatment facilities at both the Welsh rural community of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysilio gogogoch and on top of the New Zealand hill Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapiki maungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu. Until you can arrange a visitation to these place I suggest that a good dish of λοπαδοτεμαχοσελαχογαλεοκρανιολειψανοδριμυποτριμματ οσιλφιοκαραβομελιτοκατακεχυμενοκιχλεπικοσσυφοφαττο περιστεραλεκτρυονοπτοκεφαλλιοκιγκλοπελειολαγῳοσιρα ιοβαφητραγανοπτερύγων, which is renowned for its calming properties, might alleviate the symptoms of your Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia.

Okay, so mine only has one of the two main requirements: It's irrational but not overwhelming nor debilitating. Baby corn, to me, looks extremely unnatural and it just freaks me out. I will never eat it because it just looks weird. It's not like I see baby corn and go into the fetal position, it's just something I wouldn't eat because it doesn't look right to me.

that's tied in with agoraphobia I think. From Wikipedia:
The word "agoraphobia" is an English adaptation of the Greek (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.) words agora (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.) (αγορά) and phobos (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.) (φόβος), and literally translates to "a fear of the marketplace."
Agoraphobia is a condition where the sufferer becomes anxious in environments that are unfamiliar or where he or she perceives that they have little control. Triggers for this anxiety may include crowds, wide open spaces or traveling, even short distances. This anxiety is often compounded by a fear of social embarrassment, as the agoraphobic fears the onset of a panic attack (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.) and appearing distraught in public.[1] (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts._note-0)
Agoraphobics may experience panic attacks (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.) in situations where they feel trapped, insecure, out of control or too far from their personal comfort zone (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.). In severe cases, an agoraphobic may be confined to his or her home. [2] (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts._note-NIH91-1) Many people with agoraphobia are comfortable seeing visitors in a defined space they feel they can control. Such people may live for years without leaving their homes, while happily seeing visitors in and working from their personal safety zones. If the agoraphobic leaves his or her safety zone, they may experience a panic attack.

Oh.
Well......I love open spaces. I enjoy exploring unfamiliar environments and traveling as long as I don't have to interact much with people. I hate crowds, line ups, meetings, public speaking.... anything that makes me feel trapped with people.
I've had panic attacks many times in these situations. I do feel ashamed/embarrassed much more easily when I'm around other people........I was raised by a parent who used shame, humiliation, and guilt (amongst other things) as methods of control and I believe my personality was already leaning that way.

Beat me to it!
Do you remember what caused it? I think my flap-o-phobia was caused by a butterfly scaring the crap out of me when I was about ten (by suddenly bursting out from underneath the couch I was sitting next to).
Now, I'd say I hate moths more than butterflies, because they seem more random in their flight.

Used to be snakes and spiders, now only if they're send me to the hospital poisonous. (Hmm, funny story. When my daughter was about fourteen, a boy thought to impress her with shoving a snake down his shirt. Yes, these spiders have 3 pairs of 6 eyes...i killed one with some vodka and busted out my 10x hand lens to confirm, and yes, they are brown recluses. I even had some professionally identified and had a letter written to take to my apartment manager. The apartments, of course, have done nothing except spray...but that does not get rid of them entirely.

When I was a young adult, I had maniaphobia for a bit (fear of having a mental illness), a neurosis that developed when I learned some mental illnesses are genetic (and there's some on my mother's side of the family).
The paradox of maniaphobia is that a phobia is a type of mental illness (if it's truely "irrational"), so by having maniaphobia I was proving myself right. It was like the reverse of the original Catch 22 situation. I eventually got over it as I passed through my 20s with no sign of anything developing. I still do have a mild neurosis of not being in control of what my brain does, and rarely ever get drink alcohol and never do drugs.
I do also have a fear of going blind (I think I'm more afraid of that than dying), which was compounded when I was diagnosed with diabetes a couple of years ago.

Ants. I can`t stand them
Though really that is a "learned" fear in a way:
My bedroom was on the first floor next to the balcony. For some reason every March and April there used to be an ant path which led up the outside wall of our house, across the balcony and through my bedroom, there was nothing that we could really do to effectively prevent it. Now imagine the following scenario:
It`s the end of February, 5.40 AM, I am nine years old and getting up to prepare to go to school. It is quiet in the house and everything seems normal. It is fairly dark in my room and I am still very tired, I reach for a box of tissues lying on my bedside table and lift it up. Suddenly hundreds of ants start streaming in all directions from the spot where the tissues had been, like a black blob that is quickly spreading, some come directly in my direction and onto my bed.
It really freaked me out at that time, and while I never liked ants before, ever since I have really hated them (though, except for that one time, they never caused me to scream, run away or anything similar). When I see ants today, as long as they are outside I will ignore them. But, while I generally capture a spider under a glas and take it outside when I find one in the house, when I see ants inside, I will try to kill them.

Fish freak the shit out of me for some reason. I love swimming though. Never had a fear of the water just a fear of fish. If I touch one I FREAK out.
It's weird, I kayak and will often practice rolling when I'm out, and my biggest fear isn't drowning while I'm underwater... it's that there will be something in the water. Like a drifting piece of seaweed or a fish will touch my face. I hate not being able to see into the water. I'm not phobic, it just creeps me out.
Obviously I don't like things like wasps because they sting but there is no panic. I would say that feeling of panic is what defines the phobia.
Now I am afraid of heights. I am fine up a ladder but apprehensive. When I am dangling from a rope over a cliff I am fighting to hold the panic in. I see those guys building the skyscrapers, walking and balancing on the iron work without a care. I would be looking for something to cling to. It have to be brave and just leap when I bungee jump.
Another odd one is when my mask fills with water when scuba diving. I panic and have to control it as I clear the mask or dash for the surface. This is due to nearly drowning under those same circumstances as a kid. I can sit in the shallow, stick my head under water and flood the mask. As soon as I do, I get the same panic feelings even though I logically know there is no danger.

you should go. I put off going to the dentist for a couple years due to insurance reasons. Deep cleanings aren't fun which is what they have to do to you after missing cleanigns for a couple years. if you go long enough they have to do some very unpleasant things to your gums. I hate dentists too but losing teeth is something even less fun. not to mention infections in the gum line can affect your heart kidneys and liver.

I love the last one... fear of long words is such a BITCH! Its almost the same logic that there is an 'S' in the word 'lisp'. Bastards out there.... bastards.
As for the original post, I don't think I have any phobia's. I have real world fears, being mugged walking at night in a dark alley, getting into a car accident... etc. None of those paralyze me or stop me from walking at night/driving. However, I have an intense aversion (you could maybe call it a phobia) to people thinking I am stupid. That is hell for me.

Fear of Spiders, Fear of Bees, and a weird aversion to little girls, I just think if I get too close, (I honestly cross the street) they'll say I tried to rape em or something. Also fear of being seen without a shirt.

Dentists. I ABSOLUTELY HATE DENTISTS.
Also crying.Weird but true.
For all my life, dentists, esp ones with sharp pointy needles in hand made me panic.
Until...Yesterday! Huzzah!!
I found a nice dentist who actually took reasonable steps to make it go away.I got out of his chair all happy. I think I'm in love.
I am slightly claustrophobic. If I am not concentrating on something, I also tend to worry that I will do something stupid. For example, if I am sitting in the passenger side of a car, I have to lock the door because I don't trust myself enough to not just randomly fling the door open in the middle of the highway. Of course, this makes no sense at all because I could just unlock the door and then fling it open. However, the added lock would increase the amount of time it would take to fling the door open, and consequently, I would have more time to "recover" should I ever lose all sense of self-control.
I had thought I had agoraphobia for a brief time during an extremely stressful period in my life. Or maybe I just needed extra time alone to figure things out??? Not sure now.....

If I can help it, I never sit with my back to people. I wouldn't call it a phobia, but I can't stand having people behind me. I'm worried that somebody will sneak up and knife me (not really, but I like to give that as a reason when the subject comes up).
I'm the same way. That's probably as close as I get to a phobia. It's not even the idea that someone could knife me or something, but I just don't like not knowing what people are doing. I'm a little paranoid. And suspicious.
Besides that, I dislike intensely elevators, the dark, and jellyfish. They just have all those tentacles.... They make me think that I'm going to go swimming in the ocean one day, and get stung, and become paralyzed and then drown. I mean.... they don't even have any discernible sensory organs! (Unless you count tentacles....) And then, like a couple people here, I'm afraid of being touched by something underwater. I avoid murky water at all costs, and I almost always wear water shoes when I go swimming somewhere that's not a pool.
I fear people.
Yep, +1 to that.

I do not like clowns. They arn't the end all be all of my sanity if I see one- I just don't like them.
I am afraid of heights. If I am secured onto something though, I feel much better and the fear diminishes slowly.
I used to not like spiders, but I ignore them now. Instead of stomping on them I try to get them on a piece of paper and I let them back into the environment.
I don't like thorn bushes- obvious reasons. It may also be psychological in nature- I don't like being bound with thorns in my side, dragging and tearing lacerations in my side every time I step forward.
I also tend to get claustrophobic at times, depending on my mood. Most of the time I don't mind. If people are in my personal 2 meter bubble though...
I have known people with a fear of:
balloons
snakes
the number 13
cats
ladders
shampoo (??)
toothpaste
and I could never understand some of them- and even laughed at some of them- until I realized that I was afraid of heights greater than 200 feet or so.

Insectophobia. Well, not quite a phobia, because I'm not afraid of one or two bugs. But if they come in large numbers...
Phobophobia. The fear of phobias. Does that make any sense?
But to be honest, I really don't have many. Or I'm having brainfreeze and can't think of any. I used to be very nyctophobic (fear of dark), but that pretty much went away.

I will jump out of planes, climb mountains, do anything that would scare most people, but just what ever you do...keep those damn bees away from me.
Also, I don't like the idea of going down real deep in the ocean. Caves don't bother me.
Maybe not a phobia, but I really don't like having my blinds open or my door unlocked when I'm alone...just paranoid I suppose.

only one really, small one. i hate the idea of things underwater. the idea that there might be metal pieces, tires, random junk in the water i'm swimming in, like Lake Ontario or something, it creeps the shit out of me. i cannot get the image from that movie, 'What lies beneath' out, even if its been YEARS since i watched it. the idea of wrecked ships underwater, it just creeps me OUT majorly, even if i'm not in the water.
i think it also has to do with the fact that i think dying by suffocating underwater, well, sucks a lot. but, you know, falling from a great height, meh, not so much. so, i have no fear of heights.. actually i LOVE heights.
I hate shorts. I've always loathed and dreaded gym class when I was younger, because I would have to wear shorts, and show off my leg. I don't want people to see my knees. I recently joined a gym, and wear shorts there. I still can't bring myself to wear shorts leisurely regardless of the temperature. They just make you look foolish.

Other than reacting to the natural fight/flight response of dangerous encounters (which isn't fear, really) I have no fears. I cannot understand what is like to have a phobia; it all seems so bizarre, especially of things that are not harmful or dangerous. Perhaps I am protected by my personality type, where I analyze everything so much to the point it negates any phobia and/or superstition? ;)
However, I do have one embarrassing thing that makes me overly nervous and I have no idea why: Grey aliens. I have a hard time looking at drawings or renditions of them, ever since I was a young child. Those black lifeless eyes make me feel uneasy and I am immediately provoked to look away...

Imagine if your fight-or-flight response went off when you didn't want it to. You can't exactly turn it off and your mind goes crazy to get you out of there, which then reinforces the original fear (escape/avoid). Plus, there's so many worst case scenarios in some situations, and anticipatory anxiety can be worse than the actual thing.

I have a really bizarre phobia, and I can't remember the name.
I'm afraid of circular wounds. Its really hard to explain. Circles don't freak me out, nor does circles on the skin. However, if I come across tightly compacted group of circles I can immediatly imagine them as a wound. If it was a wound to begin with.....ick!
It makes me itch like crazy, and I usually work myself into such a fit.
Other than running like a banshee away from roaches, (mostly because a flying one attacked me when I was seven) and getting vertigo sometimes, I'm fine. I have faced and gotten over a lot of my mini phobias.

Insects and Arachnids. They scare me like nothing else. Oh, and I'm terrified of falling from high heights, but that's just not wanting to, you know, DIE. It's not a phobia, just a fear.

One of my greatest fears (besides the big ones, like my own death) is my nose starting to bleed during a concert. I'm afraid of it happening in any public place, really–my nose has spontaneously bled a few times, mostly (thank God) in the privacy of my own home–but sometimes during concerts I'm so sure my nose is going to bleed that I silently freak out. (Add to this the fact that high school bands and choirs generally wear white shirts and black pants. In my college orchestra, we wear all black, but until last year, if this had ever happened, I would have been wearing a white shirt, making it even worse.)

I guess I find a little humour in this because I can relate, I had this nose bleed once while waiting for the subway, of all the places I had to have it, my white t shirt and my hands had a fair amount of blood. I didn't know, I though I just had a runny nose until I was sitting on my subway and everyone was staring at me strangly. It's only ever happened once, and never again, so I dont' worry about it anymore.
My fear is bacteria and germs related to food and drink. I have to wash the dishes to make sure they are clean and I won't eat food that's left over more than a day. If someone drinks the milk right out of the bag then I won't touch it. If at out for dinner I am very careful not to put my fork or knife on the table but make sure they are on the plate, same as the straw, it cant' touch the table or I won't use it. I guess anything that goes in my mouth has to be germ free.

Here are all the phobias I currently have, or one point in time had (I posted this on another forum as well):
1. Mild (noteworthy, yet can generally be tolerated)
- Coulrophobia - fear of clowns and/or dolls
- Equinophobia - fear of horses
- Pediophobia - fear of children (I find most of them [at least young ones] to be frighteningly impulsive unpredictable)
- Glossophobia - fear of speaking publicly
2. Moderate (stronger than mild, yet not severe enough for psychological help to be necessary)
- Algophobia - fear of pain or being in pain
- Hemophobia - fear of blood
- Enochlophobia - fear of crowds
- Trypanophobia - fear of needles (and sharp needle-like objects)
3. Severe (may interfere with daily activity. Psychological help may be necessary)
- Anthropophobia - fear of people
- Heliophobia - dread or avoidance of sunlight
- Tetraphobia* - fear of the number 4
- Mysophobia* - fear of bacteria/dirt/uncleanliness
- Nosophobia* - fear or dread of catching a disease (particularly a dangerous disease)
NOTE: The phobias above listed in italics, and specifically the last three indicated by a *, are perhaps more accurately described as the result of OCD rather than individually-standing, unrelated phobias

Fruvous added to this post, 9 minutes and 4 seconds later...
My, some of you folks have quite the constellations of phobias. (Phobiae?)
I'm somewhat claustrophobic. It's mild and fairly generalized. I don't like going through tunnels, I don't like small enclosed spaces, I don't like being deep underground, and I can't stand the thought of being trapped or locked in, in any sense, on any level. The example I like to use is that I could be in a full-sized sports stadium, and yet the moment I found out I was locked in, I wouldn't be able to think of anything else but getting out.
And I am agoraphobic as well, although the real issue is my much larger and more pervasive social phobia. I have a lot of trouble going into situations where I don't know anyone, especially alone. I have trouble making phone calls. In general, I vastly prefer my social interaction to be mediated through the medium of the Internet, where I am considerably more confident.
I'm not quite anthrophobic like some of you folks. In demeanor, I'm a pretty friendly and warm person. I'm just terribly shy in social situations with which I am not familiar. Once I "warm up" I can go all the way to being practically extroverted, for short periods at least.
Let's see.... mild phobia of stinging insects.
That's about it, I guess.

Wasps; bees to a lesser extent. I keep multiple cans of wasp spray around the exterior of my home and will risk killing ornamental plants with the spray if it comes to it.
I'm LESS afraid of spiders, snakes, than most other people I encounter, but wasps... oh, boy... Rationally, I would argue that they are so quick and mobile, and can work in concert, that they have greater potential for "surprise attack" than almost any other biting/stinging thing. My reaction at the sight of one is completely irrational, though. I'll run, panic, and freak out. I've explained my phobia to the neighbors so they know not to call the men in white coats if they see me working in the yard and suddenly run in an obvious panic...

Large moths freak me out. Not enough for me to run screaming; I just don't like them near me because they're usually dusty, which is nasty enough to deter me from swatting them away. This applies to wild birds too, for pretty much the same reasons.
Edit: I also don't like walking on seaweed. I'm afraid I'll step on stuff (fish bones, fish hooks, broken shells, leeches, etc) that gets concealed underwater. Even if the water is ridiculously shallow, I'll swim over it.

Most of these are mild fears... Except the fear of flying.
Achluophobia - Fear of darkness
Aviatophobia - Fear of flying
Claustrophobia - Fear of confined spaces
Nyctohlophobia - Fear of dark wooded areas, of forest at night
Sociophobia - Fear of society or people in general.
Not sure how accurate that lists actual names are, but those are my typical phobias. And the only one that I'm deathly afraid of like I said before is Fear of flying.... The others i Just try and avoid, but if I have to encounter them it's not like I'll have a mental breakdown.

I don't know if I would say that in my case I have any phobias. I insist that the things which I develop somewhat of a fear about and which I just cannot stand being around are NOT phobias, but actually it's normal for people to prefer being in some environments, and not others, just like some species of animals like cold weather, and some like hotter weather. For example - I am not a classroom person and I would do anything to avoid them now. If I really, REALLY had to, then I would go to one, but otherwise I can't imagine myself in one. While in school, I missed as much class as possible....I can't really say WHY this is for me, it just is, and I try not to question it. I think it's normal for people not to think that they are forced to enjoy every environment....also, I could never imagine myself in surgery. Definetly NOT me. Sometimes I'll have a fight with a person and I couldn't imagine myself ever talking to them, being around them again, or seeing them....although I'm sure that if it did happen and I was in a situation where I had to act normal, I would, but the thought of this isn't something pleasant in this case. It's like I envision a system in my mind's eye with all the people, places and things that make me happy and peaceful and safe - this is pretty expansive, but the things that are NOT in it, I have a really hard time including in that system. This is why I don't appreciate sudden changes that just remove all the things that are there for a reason, and which mean so much to the people who grow accustomed to their way of life.

My phobia ia to be blaimed on my dad, sorry dad.
When i was a little kid my father and I watched a movie (to my moms disagreement), about sewer rats who came in from the dark basement and eat babies. I may have been 10, i doubt I was much older and the movie was diffenitly not in my age bracket.
Now whenever I'm in a basement and I turn the light off to go upstairs I rush up the steps to make sure I'm not eaten by a giant rat.

Trying to heal and emotional or crying person

Well that ties in with the rejection thing. I have a strong feeling of inferiority and fear of worthlessness. I'm constantly questioning why people would like me at all. Neglect and abuse as a child, among other things, spawned these feelings.

YES!! They are so incredibly horrible! I find them in the house every now and then. I live in terror that I will one day find one in my bed.

Arachnephobia - I don't really freeze up, but I do have an immediate violent reaction.
Demophobia - I can feel panic start to set in quickly. Makes having relative come visit a pain since they all want to go to the Strip and see the casinos.
Cockroaches, they get the same as spiders.
And I have a completely rational fear of falling from high places.

I've been developing a serious fear of my smoke alarm- and even the mild smell of hot things/smoke in my apartment- for about a year, now. Seriously; I can't make toast. I need to get over it before it gets out of hand.
I cover my smoke alarm in Glad Press-n-seal when I'm cooking.
Other than that: moderate arachnophobia.

Dead stuff--dead insects, rodents, birds etc. and pictures of human remains--freaked me the hell out when I was little. Like, if you had dropped a large, living cockroach down the back of my shirt, I wouldn't have really cared, but a dead one? Massive spaz-out. Luckily, I got over it, except that I still prefer to pick up dead bugs with tissue, even though they're sterile.

Embarrassingly I am scared of the dark, I start hyperventilating and go all clammy. Most people grow out of it as they get older but me being awkward and weird grew into it as I got older, wasn't scared of anything as a child :( now it's just the dark that unsettles me, still don't know why.

Heights; I jumped off a 25m plank at the local pools to try to get over it... Got a sore bum from the splash.
Metalic objects piercing my skin. I really don't like needles or knives in my personal space. I tried to overcome the needles thing by staring at it go in when I got my jab... Felt so sick I had to lie down for a bit. Did it a few more times and even volunteered to give blood once. It's manageable now. Just a dislike... Not giving blood ever again though because they pierced me like a pin cushion and got no blood at all.
The knives thing was a bit harder. It stopped me from effectively doing real knife disarms during martial arts training even though I was fine with fake wooden or rubber ones. Bf sorted me by attacking me with a real knife over and over again in a controlled manner. Can disarm ok now without freezing and potentially getting stabbed.

I have mild trypanophobia (the fear of needles) and I used to have a fear of choking or drowning some time ago.
I manage the former because I just don't like the thought of needles (not knives, I'm practically nonchalant about knives). Not about the piercing, just the thought makes me slightly nauseous (vasovagal non-syncope) and uncomfortable, but not enough to faint.

Needles scare me. When I went in for surgery to remove all four of my wisdom teeth, the assistant had to put an IV in me. He had to "dig" a little bit to hit the vein, and my heart rate doubled in a few seconds. "You can calm down, it's okay." "Ah, I can't control it!" lol

Flying. It's a pretty horrific phobia and strange as well. I've flown several times a year since I was in the womb really. Even as a toddler, I absolutely hated flying and would cry the whole time because I was petrified with fear. As I got older, that morphed into panic attacks. I think the height was caused by the first time I was returning home alone on a flight when I was 16 and we had an aborted landing over my home airport (so I was pretty familiar with how we were landing and everything). I've also injured my back in turbulence because I lock up my body so tightly on flights.
It's gotten better now that I'm on Xanax but I still do drastic things to avoid flying. I'm quite familiar with Amtrak at this point. My freshman year of college, I returned home from Boston to Atlanta by train- 24 hours. I also visited a friend in Nebraska via a 36 hour train ride each way from Boston. While living in Europe, I made all kinds of long trips via bus or train that could have been done more cheaply and quickly by plane.

Bugs, i still get nightmares of the suckers crawling all over me.
Social phobia, i think i might be about done with this one.
I actually do not think that I have any phobias!
I have a few very mild fears... but these only happen when I'm alone.
The large centipedes that I occasionally find in my house freak me out a bit if they startle me by running across the floor or something... otherwise I'm not that bothered although I don't like to pick them up because they're huge.
I also have a slight fear of darkness, but usually only in my own house (??) when I'm alone.

Foods. I'm not really sure if it's a phobia, but I find that I can't try new foods really unless it's something I'm damn sure I'll enjoy. That and foods in general I suppose. It borders on neurosis.
Other than that though, I don't like bugs being on me (I'm never sure which ones bite). And I have claustrophobia if I think I can't get out. A small space is fine if I know I can get out of it, or someone will get me out. But when I'm stuck then I don't do so well.

The only phobia that I really have is being the person to call time of death someday. I know it will happen, probably sooner rather than later given my chosen profession. It's not the act itself that scares me. People die; I realize that is just a fact of life. I am afraid that the death will be a result of a mistake I make or I won't do everything in my power to save that life, and I'm afraid of how knowing I made a mistake will affect me. I realize that the goal of all the training that I am undergoing is to prevent mistakes, but who honestly goes the entirety of their career without making a mistake?

Im afraid of needles (injections and such), not sure why, just cant stand them. That said it hasnt stopped me getting them when I absolutely have too.
Most likely I think it came about when I got a big cut above my lip and needed stiches and the doc used a local anestetic using a needle before the stiching, something scaring about someone holding a needle in your face, hurt like hell too.
At least I know I wont be injecting myself with smack at all ;)

Wild animals in general, and energetic dogs. If I hear one barking, or worse, see one running around near me (even if it's just 'playing'), I freeze like a terrified rabbit. All my senses sort of turn off, and I can't move. Also, anything with a stinger terrifies me. It's terrible in social settings.
And popsicles. The thought of the horrible cold feeling on my teeth, and the sound...I'm shivering just thinking about it.

I absolutely hate and fear all kinds of insects, spiders and whatnot. I can't - under any circumstances - touch those things and I have to have at least 2-3 meters distances between me and the insect/whatever. Even butterflies, midges and that kinds of stuff.
Other than that I fear deep waters and with it possibly drowning and also losing limbs and not being able to do what I am used to do because of the missing limb(s). Ah and heights, how could I forget this one?! :)

I can't stand to watch television documentaries where SCUBA divers swim through underwater caves. The thought of being trapped underwater freaks me out.
I was going through some of my old stuff recently and found a PeeWee Herman action figure. I took it to show a coworker I thought would enjoy it and she backed out of the room and couldn't look at it. She fears all types of dolls or mannequins. Who woulda thought? I've been teasing her lately that she needs to shop at Old Navy. Their mannequins kind of freak me out too...

Hah! That reminds me of something a particularly earnest (foul-mouthed) lady friend told me. Whenever a guy expresses a desire to have anal sex with her, she says "sure! Before we begin, though, let me put something in your asshole and move it around for a bit."

I turn into a 10 year old girl when I see spiders. Not kidding, I'll screech and run away flailing my arms and beg the nearest person to kill it. I lived in a basement suite for a year and there was a pretty nasty spider problem. They were goddamned everywhere. I used one of the 4 or 5 things I actually learned during my psych degree and did some "flooding" (Picked up a spider and forced myself to hold the fucker even though I was melting down). I eventually got used to the things. I still hated them, but more because they didn't pay rent. I moved to an upstairs suite after and now I'm a big pansy around them again. Stupid spiders.

Don't ever go to Charleston, SC lol. The first time I drove there to see my BF, I was terrified of driving the bridges. A lot of them are very arched and very high, unlike the Brooklyn Bridge or Golden Gate Bridge, which are flat. But you get used to it once you do it a few times. The Cooper River bridge is not so bad...

I just figured out that I have some odd fear of drowning. Pretty minor, considering I can swim pretty well (not Olympiad, but pretty good). I just don't want to drown by others, as with myself I am capable of not drowning.
Major issues with cockroaches. And my house has a lot of them which I'm trying to get rid of. Yes, I scream and run around. Then spray them, and then go out and buy more roach baits or seal some more cracks.

I fear waking up in a psychiatric hospital surrounded by personnel that insist I belong there and being sedated before I can escape.
Suffocating or breathing in noxious fumes. I often feel as though something is stuck in my throat or that I can't breathe, and that often triggers an anxiety attack. I had one while driving the other day, and it wasn't fun.
I'm also a little afraid of getting old. I guess that's normal, but I think about it way too much and when I do I just get really scared.
Other than that, I wouldn't say I have any phobias. I really, really, really don't like mannequins or wigs though. Or being distracted when I'm driving.
