I read somewhere once that a person's response to the phrase "I Only Matter When ___________" reveals much about that person's driving motivation.
How would you fill in this blank?

I have been trying to come up with some answer for this and I can't. I "matter" simply because I am a being capable of experiencing suffering. In that sense, I "matter" as much as any other being with consciousness. From another viewpoint, I won't "matter" trillions of years from now, just as nothing now alive will matter after such an immense amount of time. Given those two viewpoints, equally valid, I choose to focus on the fact that, and all my fellow conscious beings, matter now. They don't have to do anything except be conscious to "matter" in the sense that they should be treated as the objects of ethical consideration.

Not really, that made me chuckle. Comedic tautologies are always fun.

I'm not sure.
When I can justify my mattering.
O.o Is mattering a word?
Though none of us matter really.
Do you mean from our own veiwpoint or that of another?
From my own, I only matter when I can find a purpose for me to matter, and when I can justify my own mattering. Or someone else can justify it for me.

__ I look at this world from a singular point of view. If it every becomes possible to exist as more than one consciousness, perhaps this particular part of me won't matter~ at ;east as much.

Oh, I laughed out loud on this one. Somebody doesn't struggle with self-esteem now, do they?

I've only struggled with Self-Esteem once. For about 10 minutes.
For a while I was really really depressed. I realised the only way to raise my self esteem forever was to remove the "High/Low" self esteem levels. The only way to do it was to remove the idea that I should care about what other people think about me. Took me about 10 minutes to finally come to the opinion "Fuck everyone else".
Now I'm on top of the world. I am the world.
Whenever anyone has offended me, I try to raise my soul so high that the offense cannot reach it.
~ Descartes
Therefore, no offense can ever affect me.

Great minds think
The simple have no other choice. :D
I recognise the compliment and thank you for it, but whenever I hear that comment I cannot help but reply with that one. Einstein and Tesla disagreed. They were great minds.
Their thought processes and functions were the same, they just had differing opinions.

No one individual matters. Life would not cease to exist without you or me.

I forcefully disagree. Nothing would exist without me.
Only because that is all you can see.

I only matter when I have caused a change in the exterior world.
(Oh, thanks, guys. Reading this thread has temporarily obliterated virtually all traces of the meaning of 'matter' from my mind. * laughs *)

Obviously, this doesn't hold for INTJs
What does it mean to "matter"? I always matter to myself. I matter to others whenever someone else thinks I matter to them at that point in time. This seems tautological, but I can hardly define the word for every individual that will ever come into contact with me from now until my death. Actually, even after my death, there are tons of ways in which I could matter to others.
