Has anyone ever used the mindstorm parts to build a robot? I've got some ideas I'd like to try, but things are a bit pricey to spend money on only to find out it's just a toy. Specifically, has anyone used the mindstorm controller to coordinate a robot with a bunch of legs (like 4-8)?

yes, I did it in an engineering workshop @ my school. It almost made me want to be an engineer, very fun stuff and you can get extremely creative, just youtube some people's creations, it's cool as hell
i didn't use the controller, but i programmed the main part to go around this obstacle course and pick up ping pong balls, i say get it if you'll have time to play with it
tons of fun

Yup I did this freshman year at college. I won the award for best robot design :-D. We had to build a robot that navigated a course to pick up balls and place them in baskets. Collect enough points and you win. I wish the video was still up i cant find it though :(
My robot was programmed to navigate the course. I didn't use the controller.

Are you talking about high school, as in you had an engineering course at your high school?!?

What about used components? Do they hold up to abuse well?

My school seemed to be using the same kits year in and year out. For the most part they held up pretty well. Especially the newer sets they seem to have more parts and such.
