As I was checking what type is most closely related to my own personality, I wondering about the definitions of 'introversion' and 'extraversion' in MBTI and how it relates to being 'introverted'.

From wiki I got:
"The preferences for Extraversion (thus spelled in Myers-Briggs language) and Introversion are sometimes referred to as attitudes. Briggs and Myers recognized that each of the functions can show in the external world of behavior, action, people and things (extraverted attitude) or the internal world of ideas and reflection (introverted attitude)."

As I understand it, this is mostly focused on the area of your interests.
Generally speaking, "Introversion" leads you more to the natural sciences, "Extraversion" would lead you more to social sciences.

This differs with whether you are "introverted", regarding other people, whether you need/enjoy social interaction.

In my own case, I am highly interested in economics, politics and history, while I have little interest in physics, chemistry, biology, etc, hence I can consider myself more "extraverted".

But I feel I am really an introverted person. I tend to be more comfortable on my own and I have very little need for social interaction, relative to others.
(Though I'm certainly socially 'capabable' and generally getting along with people very well)

So which definition would be more appropriate? The definition that matches your own interests or your attitude towards social interaction?

Is there a very strong correlation between the two or are they, in practice, not that related?

i love social science, especially Sociology since it deals with people

but to escape that, i withdraw into physical science, which peaks my interests

i work in a technical field, so my expertise is in computer science

My favorite area is linguistics, which is sometimes categorized as a social science, since it is a human phenomenon. But what I study is mostly theory, formalisms, ideas, etc. related to linguistics and I haven't done any fieldwork yet. I am definitely an introverted person. To me, introversion is more a concentration of energy going inward.

thoughts and feelings that intro-vortex instead of the other way around

i don't think it can be specified into a narrow spectrum of career choices though

You attitude, or your preference, towards social interaction.

Your interests may be influenced by your preference for introversion vs. extraversion, but your interests are not the determining factor of I vs. E.

This is it.
If you are recharged by being alone, you are an introvert. Although many introverts have tendencies towards math and science, you are not an extravert (still bothers me to spell it that way!) just because you don't follow the majority of introverts.
