I hasn't used windows in so long. I've been on linux for years now and 2 hours into my windows online time I have picked up a virus that keeps trying to trick me into downloading more viruses. Does anybody know any good, FREE virus removal software that isn't malware?

This is NOT an issue I ever have to deal with in any of the nix's and after paying 90 dollars for Windows XP SP2 I do not want to pay a single cent for more software. I have comodo installed but that's done nothing to stop any virus's and has not even picked up several of the virus's I know are here.

This has to be the worst time I've ever spent online.

Yeah, blah blah, 'nix is better etc etc, we all know.

Without knowing what the virus is, what it's doing etc. It makes it difficult.

Do this, work out what it's called, research it. Chances our plenty of other people have had to deal with the same one and there are instructions on how to remove it out there.

Also, nobody makes decent virus's (virii, don't care) anymore. It's probably just another boring trojan/spyware thing. The world needs the virus's of old, it's sad.

When I tend to other peoples windows machines I tend to install Avast anti-virus and ZoneAlarm firewall. They've never failed for me ^^

*note* each have a pay version and a free version, so you may have to dig around for the free one

That Storm bot-net seems to have stirred quite a lot of people~

I've used AVG free and paid versions for years, do try again to download. Since I'm in Australia, I'll link to a download site which might be different or a mirror site... To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

Now I think of it, I had to dump Norton (no loss) to acquire AVG. Would I tempt fate and say I've never had any virus? Ha!

For future reference. Although Norton's AV is terrible in terms of efficiency, the virus labs come up with some good reports. By the looks of it threatexpert had some good information on this.

For future reference you should be able to figure out what the main process executable is then search for it in google.

And yes hacker we need to go back to the good old days ;) to real viruses, before these little script worms and spyware.

Sobig (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.) has potential.

As does the Joydotto (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.) worm

Another free malware and virus remover is Spybot just for future reference.

I have a question about AVG... Is there any special reason I cannot use MSN at the same time as having the firewall on?

Shouldn't be a conflict between those two, I have them both functioning fine (if you like msn which I loathe)but there is a conflict between Nortons firewall and aspects of AVG. Mines a paid version of AVG and consulting them long ago re conflicts they had me search for everything related to Norton and delete. So I did, then reinstalled AVG. Plain sailing since. Two other computers of mine have the free version and also working fine (grr they freeze/die/crash and I buy another cuz I want the newer speeds then whizkid partner gets curious and fixes them, though he's allergic to using them!). AVG also has a forum anyone can view. Good luck - I am so not the person to ask about computers, you're way ahead of me, but happy to talk about my experiences.

I prefer pidgin to the ad infested msn, but i can play chess on msn, so that's the benefit

Generally speaking, you need tow things for security: regular, free AVG and Windows Defender for anti-spyware. Other software tends to be a pain in the ass; AVG's free edition is hardly silent, but not terrible if you shut off the startup scan (AVG is great for preventing viruses, but if the virus infects you, you're boned and need to manually kill it).

As a general rule, viruses and malware need to be unregistered in order to effectively detach them from Windows. This often involves killing the Winlogon and Explorer process trees and going through the registry to kill services and startup entires related to the virus. After that, just delete the files and reboot. It's maybe a ten-minute process, barring any really, really nasty infections, and just requires a bit of experience and the right tools (Process Explorer, Autoruns, HijackThis). On another note, I haven't gotten a virus in years with my current security setup; the best way to prevent viruses is to use your head and be careful about where you go. As a general rule, as long as you're not downloading cracks from piracy sites (use Bittorrent for software, it usually comes with the cracks and has comments to warn you of trojans), looking at some niche porn (again, use BT if you're into that sort of thing), or installing software that comes with bullshit (zwinky, Kazaa, etc), you shouldn't have problems.

Generally speaking, you need experience of using Windows. I use it for about 9 years. Now I have used the version on my computer for 1 year without any Anti-Virus software, and only once it was infected. If there are any virus in my computer, I'll soom noticed that and delete it manually ( I mean without using Anti-Virus software to scan ).

And don't allow other people to 'borrow' (use) your computer. My co-worker, a computer sciences student no less, managed to get a virus on my computer at work while he only used it for a couple of hours. Tard. -_-

That is why if someone else uses my computer they get the guest account, not allowed to download, and only use Firefox.

Best way to protect yourself? Use AVG, Spybot S&D, and Lavasoft Adaware. And NEVER use IE, Limewire, or have 'toolbars' installed into your browsers.

It gets even better. He managed to download the virus through Firefox, as it was in the Firefox temporary internet files folder. :faint:
