Obvious we can go with a number of bands here, but I thought we would begin with one of the greatest.
What is your favorite?
Why?

Shine on You Crazy Diamond, all 25 parts of it. I just love the feel and construction of the song. The guitar in it is incredible and everything about the song is just amazing. I love that part where they fake you out when you expect Roger Waters to sing, but you have to wait for another guitar rift then he starts.
I love Echoes too, except I hate the middle part where there is no music and it's just a bunch of noise.
But I mean, every Floyd song is good.

AGREE!!!
It is near impossible to pick just one. BREATHE, always hits me like a ton of bricks.

What is it with INTJ's and Pink Floyd? Your tastes are similar and defy cultural differences. My boyfriend (who is an INTJ) has driven me crazy with "Shine on you Crazy Diamond". I have listened to it with him so many times that it is gradually becoming our song (like I have an alternative). He has imposed already his opinion about the superiority of Pink Floyd to his friends but I am trying to resist.

Pink Floyd is not one of my favorite bands, but I did like The Wall album. Another Brick in the Wall is my favorite song from there. We used to sing it to the substitute teachers when they would try to teach us in high school. Also, I saw a rockumentary about their early days with Syd Barrett. Now his lyrics were interesting. I liked his song Bike. You should have asked this question about The Who or The Doors. Them I love.

Anyone like Atom Heart Mother Suite? That song is so powerful.

Probably "Money" or "The Wall". I know, how obvious. But I'm not a huge Floyd fan. I lump them in with Nirvana as a "very good, yet ridiculously over-rated" band.

Whichband is very good and not ridiculously over-rated?

It would be hard to nail down just one song most of their albums are so played by the media that several great pieces get overlooked I think one that falls into that group would have to be my selection. "Careful with the axe Eugene".

Well there are a lot of bands that would fall into this category. But if you were asking the more direct question "Who do U like!?", then I'd say "Led Zeppelin".
Floyd is good, to be sure, but I sort of discovered Zeppelin first, so I'm sort of wrecked for rock music now. Nothing else lives up to The Mighty Zep. Floyd very talented band though. Just a bit too mellow for my taste. I prefer the high-octane feel of Zeppelin, or The Who, or AC/DC. But imo, no band comes close to Zeppelin, the best rock band ever. The Beatles are the Greatest rock band of all time, but Zeppelin was the Best. There is a slight difference.

Comfortably Numb.
It's just so soothing. I asked a guy in the band at the Queensland Irish Association (Eliz street, Brisbane.) to play it, and he said no, informing me that it was voted in the top 10 most depressing songs of all time... Heh, and I loved it at a time when I was on top of the world. I suppose I might have just been happy there were depressed people, but it still felt great. Uplifting.

I second that choice.
"There is no pain, you are receding..." Bliss. Pure sonic opiate.
But that is of course because I am already a melancholic soul chronically disassociated from reality.

At least you have good taste. I think the top bands best bands of all time are:
1. The Beatles
2. Pink Floyd
3. Led Zeppelin
4. Nothing definitive here maybe Queen, Kansas, Radiohead or Supertramp

What is it with INTJ's and Pink Floyd?
Well I know INTPs and ENTJs also who like them so maybe it is an NT type of thing. I think this is because the Floyd have so much depth and intelligence.
My favourite stuff is from Live in Pompeii. "Echoes" is a masterpiece. "Careful with that Axe", I love the screaming in the middle. I also love Dark Side of the Moon. It is an incredible recording technically.

Lol, I'm sure you can find a lot of different people who like Pink Floyd, they are a very popular band. If anything N has more do to with liking Floyd, nothing else. There music is really deep and intuitive, I'm sure Roger Waters is an NF, but I'm not sure what his type is.

I couldn't pick just one, but in the interests of adding to the discussion, I'll mention "Free Four." I like songs whose cheery, upbeat music doesn't fit very well with their depressing lyrics.
I also really like the part of The Wall with "One of My Turns," "Don't Leave Me Now," and "Another Brick in the Wall Part III."
Some others that I like a lot:
Dogs
Sorrow
Yet Another Movie
Lost for Words
High Hopes
And of course, there are also quite a few that I am required by law to mention, like "Wish You Were Here" and "Time."

Raconteur, I'm finding your tastes more and more acceptable.
Tough question! Their music is so excellent all around.
Top pick: Us and Them
Runner up: Time
Favorite album is The Final Cut, tho. The story it tells actually makes me pretty emotional if I play it thru.

Comfortably Numb.
There's another song on the radio these days that has a similar opening chord arrangement, and I'm always like, "No way, are they playing comfortably numb?" and then I'm like, "Aw, crap."

Yes probably. I have noticed that my friends who have quite opposite personalities to me absolutely hate Pink Floyd. It disturbs them! I am a songwriter too and I notice my music has the same effect on them (whereas my NT friends like it).

Oh I love that one. Cracks me up every time!
Comfortably Numb was great...
But I'd have to say the Bike song because it was my first, and it cracked me up.

No other band will ever top Pink Floyd. My favorite is also "comfortably numb" but I love them all and I've listened to them over and over for years. Roger Waters is my hero and I hope he tours again...I'd hate to never see him live. Richard Wright died last year.

Breaking the mold here:
I choose "Wish you were here" it reminds me of my little brother. He died when we were both young.

High Hopes is my favorite. It has my favorite guitar solo of all time.
Time, Echoes, Another Brick In The Wall, Shine On You Crazy Diamond and Comfortably Numb are also awesome. I probably forgot some songs.

It's interesting that several people mentioned The Final Cut, since that is really more of a Roger Waters solo album. I listened to it a lot when it came out but I haven't touched it for about fifteen years or twenty years.
Shine On You Crazy Diamond is one of my favourites, along with the whole of Dark Side Of The Moon.
From the early Floyd, which was really a different band, in my opinion, I like Arnold Layne and See Emily Play.
You can listen to all (I think) of Syd Barrett's solo stuff on Spotify. Pink Floyd aren't on there yet.

Astronomy Domine (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.) - Never heard anything quite like it.
Fearless (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.) - The lyrics are perfect & the music fits.
And as said before, anything off Dark Side of the Moon.
Pink Floyd is not one of my favorite bands, but I did like The Wall album. Another Brick in the Wall is my favorite song from there.
i completely agree with this portion. if Floyd had done 'The Wall' when i was in high school, i guarantee i would have been singing it to certain teachers. good article in a recent 'Guitar Player' on 'the Black Strat'.

For me it's a tie between Us and Them and Comfortably Numb---but then I also love the entire Dark Side of the Moon album as well as The Wall. And Shine on You Crazy Diamond is totally, totally great.

High Hopes. Great intro, amazing lyrics, excellent climate. It's just the best. And "The Divison Bell" is my favourite Pink Floyd album.

All of it. I really couldn't pick a favourite, as I could listen to Pink Floyd all day. I also enjoy some of their various solo albums, particularly Roger Waters's The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking. A lot of the less well-known albums are under-rated.
I think I like Pink Floyd for the same reason I like James Joyce - it's very complex, and it's all about the alienation of the individual, something I suspect a number of INTJs feel acutely. The one bit that kind of annoys me is the mention of "the bleeding hearts and artists" - I am an artist, but NEVER a bleeding heart!
I'm also quite fond of the Who, the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Talking Heads, and a lot of David Bowie. I like a few more recent bands as well (the White Stripes, in particular), but when I'm really feeling down, I listen to Pink Floyd at full volume and read Modernist literature.

Strange. When I'm really feeling down, I tend to lie in a darkened room and contemplate suicide. Ah well. Each to his own, eh?

Hey, wait, what? Only one person to even mention Echoes? How is this possible? Yeah, okay, it's not my favourite song either, but I think it's definitely their greatest and 'best' song.
I couldn't pick one favourite song as they have so many great ones, but my top five would be
Breathe
Time
In the Flesh (both of them, really)
The Happiest Days of Our Lives
Empty Spaces/What Shall We Do Now?
My favourite albums are The Wall and The Dark Side of the Moon (not very original, heh) and Meddle.
In my opinion TDSotM is Pink Floyd's best album, though the most overrated one too. It has amazing lyrics (to my mind Roger Waters wrote better lyrics than Dylan and Lennon combined) beautiful music and all the members of the band were still working very much together.
The Wall is awesome too, but the team spirit is lacking.

Hey! I listen to Pink Floyd too when I'm feeling down!
I don't know if this sounds strange, but Pink Floyd really changed me when I discovered it all those years ago. And I would've never discovered it if it weren't for the Atom Heart Mother album cover.

I know what you mean about that cover. It was brilliant. In fact, the late 60s and the 70s were the best time for album covers. Many of them were works of art. It's sad that the CD came along and limited the canvas to a tiny 4"x4" rather than the 12"x12" of old. Of course, the gatefold covers were even bigger. I think I'll start a new thread on favourite album covers.

David Gilmour - There's No Way Out of Here (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.)
I'd never noticed the contradiction between the two until I listened back to back.
Roger Waters:
Who needs information
When you're living in constant fear
Just give me confirmation
There's some way out of here
David Gilmour:
There's no way out of here, when you come in, you're in for good

Wish You Were Here, it reminds me of an old friend who chose different path in life than me. I do miss her dearly. It speaks to me on other levels as well.
Dark Side of the Moon was my first cassette tape (I found it on the side of the road when I was, like 6, and thus it was my introduction to music (other than the country my parents listened to). It will always be one of my favorites & all the songs hold special meaning for me.
