Why are there so many Jap-dedicated avatar sections? I'm not dissing it, being a Jap, but I don't see "Chinese art" or 'Tiki art' (sorry, Tiki was random... just the namesake of TykiMikk, my new avatar, heh). Just wondering...

The manga anime explosion is starting, I noticed it was when I begain to dreft aways from it--I always detatch myself from something if it gets popular, without intention.
I agree, I want some chinese, indian, or egyptian icons; that would be cool.

Well, I guess Japan is a rather INTJ-oriented culture, like Germany. Curiously, a lot of INTJs on message boards, including myself, have Germanic usernames.

I'm not as familiar with art from these cultures and/or have not found websites with enough quality images. If you have any recommendations of specific artists or links to online galleries, I'll take a look at them.

I dislike the Wapanese. But I can't say I wasn't part of that stupid cult once. Who really cares, the Japanese have dominated the arts section (animation) for a long time now. I still prefer Seurat's Gray Weather as opposed to some crap Naruto fan-art.

No, could you give me a link?

um.. try some scanlation sites.. What I usually do is just google the terms "tsubasa chronicles" and "scanlations" and usual find good items. Although sometimes it takes a great deal of time, the results are satisfying.
Anime/Manga is certainly great, but I think the quality of the art in them are decreasing as the demand increases.
I must say though, Clamp artbooks are still great!
Tsubasa was a good one for art, and so was Magic Knight Rayearth even though that's much older.
Can we get some good ol' fashioned Sailor Moon stuff up here? The artwork for that series is superior to a lot of the new stuff out there IMO.
BTW, you get plenty of Chinese art stuff if you (picture) google it.

EDIT:
I also suggest Miyzaki Hayao art. Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Laputa, Nausicaa? Best anime art EVER
Try Minitokyo (http://gallery.minitokyo.net/scans/) for a selection of anime/manga scans. I think you need membership for original sizes, but for avatars that's not necessary.

Gankutsuo: The Count of Monte Cristo has some of the best anime artwork I've ever seen, and the style is unique as well.

And I thought I was alone!
I agree the whole anime thing is wayyy out of porportion. But i think it's better then that jap inspired american cartoon crap that we see on cartoon network, that is just wrong.

That depends. Computer design is more and more used as time passes, but while some anime become awful just because of that, there are others which turn out to be pretty nice.
Nausicaa? Best anime art EVER
One of the best, sure. Best, hard to say!
Anyway, the whole anime thing becomes more and more of a trend as time passes, and that's why we see in more and more places anime-related stuff. Let's hope however that the producers won't kill it's beauty on the altar of mass-production for the sake of the masses, because if that happens, well, bye bye anime art, even if it will not vanish.

Heh heh, and I just used a manga pic to make my avatar...
I like pretty pictures, and there's a lot of that in manga and anime, so I have a lot of pics related, but I'm more a pretty picture kind of person, anything and everything it may involve.

hmmm... People like anime, they like manga, they like video games, and if it comes from Japan, so be it.

I think the point is that, it's not so much the popularity of anime/manga etc that is the cause, but the ease at which Jezebel is able to find images to use for avatars.
If you want a particular subject for avatars, go beyond saying "I want this" and actual go out and get it.

Man, those are some sweet artist. Thanks for the share!
For the original poster, I have to admit, I recently got into Japanese culture/language/anime/manga/whathaveyou. It's quite addicting.

Being stationed in Japan and interacting with the culture on an almost daily basis since 2006, I can truly say that this country has a "comfortable" feel to it: low crime rate, widespread common courtesy and manners, strong work ethic, and a vivid imagination.
Even though I'm strongly considering staying here after my military term is up, I don't see myself doing that immediately: I want to move to Europe, particulary the United Kingdom. I like to travel.
