Starcraft, one of the most popular computer games in history, how did you play this excellent game ? Perhaps you are still playing it.
Did you simply do what was necessary to complete the level ?
Or did you have your own goals as well ? Perhaps wipe the enemy off the map, every trace gone.
Did you use cheat codes or try different approaches to crack the level ?
Did you rush through like a first person shooter or carefully work your way to victory ?
Which were your favorite missions, favorite race ?

Multiplayer. The campaign is a fun mini-game.

Q. Starcraft, one of the most popular computer games in history, how did you play this excellent game? Perhaps you are still playing it.
A. No, But I have put well over 100+ hours into the game in the past, mostly during my adolescent years throughout high school.
Q. Did you simply do what was necessary to complete the level?
A. I mostly played multiplayer mode, offline.
Q. Did you use cheat codes or try different approaches to crack the level?
A. No.
Q. Favorite race ?
A. Zerg
I've mostly played Multi-player mode, and LAN modes. I was never interested in the campaign.
My method of madness?

I haven't played in a long time but I exclusively played multiplayer after going through the campaign once.
My primary tactic was the terran rush, w/siege tanks and marines using scvs and mobile buildings as fodder/mobile terrain to break up zerg/protoss melee. If the game went long I'd use ghosts/wraiths/science vessels depending on the opposing army. Hit and run with transports was always fun too... it's all coming back.

I primarily played multiplayer. My race of choice is zerg. My strategy was to have mass hatcheries around the map with no "main base". Spawn hydralisks and lurkers at each location then mass attack from all sides. The strategy seemed to work well most of the time. High templars were always a thorn in my spine.
My favorite mission would have to be the survive for 30 minutes.

Agree, classic mission.
Zerg tip - the queen can "parasite" a doodad critter. Critter wanders around the map as your spy.

Still playing, logged in over 2000 hours on x-fire... and that's only since 2004. I probably have 4000+ hours logged into that game. Competed on a semi-pro level, winning tournaments and competing in private leagues.
I haven't competed in a few years, mostly playing casually, now, with a few friends. Currently playing 3on3 BGH games (how the mighty have fallen...), and mostly doing silly things to embarrass the opponents. I pretty much just build zealots the entire game, trying to give my opponents a chance, while teching to a 2nd race and getting some imbalanced unit combo that involves zealots (ultralisks / zealot which is like a better zling / ultralisk combo, BC / Carrier, guardians / zealots). I don't think we've actually lost a game in a good while.
I still follow the professional scene in Korea pretty avidly and routinely watch their replays when they are posted, though I hate VODs.
Playing a lot of Starcraft 2 right now... I mean a lot. I like the game, but it has some glaring problems that need to be addressed, balance wise. Will transition into purely SC2 when it is released, unless there are glaring imbalances that are unresolved during the beta. It hurts to say good-bye to my dear friend SC1. Met a lot of my internet friends / gamers in Clan-x17 (USEast) and Protoss Strategy pre-broodwar.
Did you simply do what was necessary to complete the level ?
Played the campaign about 4-5 times. It's really fun, to be honest. The story is great. It was pretty easy, after learning how to play the game.
Which were your favorite missions, favorite race ?
True Colors was probably my favorite mission. It is the one where you ice fenix and edmund duke

Ive played the campaigns a bunch of times. I also played quite a bit online, tho mostly with friends, never been much of a competitive gamer. I used to really enjoy playing protoss so I could use mind control or w/e it was to steal scv's and drones and build all the different units. I reinstall it every once and a while and go through it again, its still fun. Fantastic game.
i like zerg. i usually do zergling rush or lurker rush against terran.

Terran all the way. Whenever it comes to games like that usually am always a human or an elf.
Fan of the counter rush however that usually only works against Zerg users that rely only on zerging. Also would love to build up quickly a Drop Ship and fill it up with Vultures + mines. Drop them by the enemy's mining, drop the mines around all the workers, and then take out their base. Many of times ended a match with that.
Prefer playing teams though, then focusing on Goliaths + air or Seige Tanks + air. Defense would usually be rows of turrets with bunkers behind them.
"In the pipe, five by five" and loved "Goliath online".

To those who have played SC2, did it have the same feel as SC1? My friend is concerned it will be too much like WC3.

Keep selecting the unit, they say different things.
They say SC2 is a trilogy, perhaps more units added with each part.

But of course. Although WarCraft had better extended quotes in my opinion. Just those were my favorites via Terran.

Zerg and Protoss fan here. I usually started with Protoss, and used the Dark archon to get a hold of a Zerg Drone or an SCV so I had a multi-racial empire:sneaky: I didn`t play the campaigns much. And I confess to using cheat codes.

Protoss fan. I love putting codes on. Setup 50 photon cannons outside enemy base just for fun.

I've been too lazy to get the beta. (if you preorder at gamestop you get it as well as some other stores) but my cousins have it and they were die hard sc1 fans. They love it. Still has some feel but smoother and much more developed. Haven't heard a single negative response from them.

So how did you play that one out? I always took the fight to the zerg before they had a chance to send a huge wave at the end (though part of me wonders if the huge wave wasn't auto-generated by an in-map scenario trigger and didn't have anything to do with the zerg's actual condition). In particular I went straight for the hatcheries and pretty much ignored everything else. It made the end of the mission less harrowing, but more fun throughout.

It's a very familiar game. The play-style is the same as SC1. Also, it has improved UI & unit responsiveness. There are enough new features to keep the gameplay fresh, though. It has a very different pace than the original SC, but at the same time the core mechanics have not changed much (macro / unit diversity / timing / unit micro / positioning, etc...).

Last time I played the mission was 8 years ago. I can't remember much. I think I continually built bunkers all the way into zerg territory.

I've played it a couple ways.
Total defense - get your base set up with tanks, 3 bunkers at each entrances. They don't get in and all charging zerg die before the drop ships get there. Make suvs right off the bat to get your economy going. Space out some mines outside the base but not so close they drag to your guys. Get upgrades.
Take the fight to them - Get some upgrades, control group of marines. Head out and start killing. Keep making marines.
Remember you can slow the game down or speed it up :) Keyboard keys: - +

I played LAN style against my brother. I was Zerg, he was Protoss, every time. I would attack him with Zerg rushes of massive armies, but he usually won- he always built a massive defense system that I had trouble getting through.

I played and still play the original Starcraft. I can't beat the last Protoss missions in single-player, yet.
In single-player, I usually preferred trying to wipe all enemies off the map when I can.
To defeat Terran Mission 10 (The Hammer Falls):
1) Do not upgrade ground units beyond level 1; you'll need the resources to build and upgrade your battle cruiser fleet.
2) Take out the red force to your northwest, and use their territory as a staging area to take out the Ion Cannon.
3) Build a wall of missile turrets two rows thick; you'll need that many to stop enemy battle cruisers when they attack your base.

I have some good memories of this game. I played this game at least 4 hours per day over the course of about 3 years during high school. I usually played online with a friend of mine, and we'd play 2v2 games on Lost Temple. 90% of the time I would go with a random race selection just for kicks, although I my preference was Zerg > Terran > Protoss. I had about 3 accounts over that time period, and altogether my record was something like 800-500-50 (the disconnects were mostly from using dial-up).
My favorite tactic to pull off was mutalisk + zerglings. Disrupting their resources gatherers with mutalisks at the 10 minute mark always put the opponent on edge :p
I played using every style I found. I used to frequent a korean site with videos of all the big names playing the game. I became pretty good at using BoXeR's style (marines + medics, then later in the game tanks + science vessels), hydralisks + lurkers, and dragoons + reavers. My biggest problem was my APM, as I could never break 120 actions per minute, even while utilizing hotkeys.
Single player was also very good. I must have played through the game (both the regular game and Brood War) at least 5 times.
My favorite mission would have to be the survive for 30 minutes.
After a couple of times through the game, I started massing marines and vultures on that map. I would wipe out all the Zerg on that map and have expansions at their bases with 5 minutes to spare.

I played very badly. My favorite race was Zerg thanks to their general awesomeness. That didn't work out so well with my favorite strategy - building base defenses and upgrades. I'm an RPG gamer at heart and losing tons of units in reckless attacks somehow irks me.

I just got to True Colors, it's one of the zerg Brood War missions.
In 6 min. they will counter attack. The trick is what to do with that 6 min.
There are many possibilities but which combination will yield the best results ?
Strategy seems to be all important in this mission.

I've been playing for about 10 years (it's been awhile now) but fun times loggin on to battlenet. Yeah, I was one of the few females who actually played well, but the game is just incredibly awesome. I was sent a beta key for starcraft 2 so I decided to have game before diving into more studying. For my first game of starcraft 2 I choose to be good old simple and easy Terran. Soon I realized that all was not as it seemed. Marines required gas!!! WTF! I had no idea what some on the units are or what they do. Then something with a jet pack was killing my scvs. At that point in time I thought I would go old school and make a marine and tank army. Built 20 marines and 4 tanks and ran them into my enemy's base. Some big thing killed most of marines and one tank. To remedy my losses I sent another 10 marines and 2 hellions in and managed to win the game.
Crazy shit...sigh

Yea theres tons of new units. What was the enemy? Terran as well? Seems so. It was probably a thor that kicked your a** :-D.
Protoss have a new unit called mothership but it's identical to a flying arbiter. Most of the stuff is just reworkings for a new balanced game.
I'm loving it so far.

Marines do not cost gas.
That big thing is the Thor. Pretty sure Arnold Schwarzenegger did the voice acting for that unit, or someone who can do one mean Arnold impersonation

Beta is probably gonna end around June (I'm thinking end of June, hoping for mid July), just fyi.
When that happens I don't know what I am going to do.
Hiding strategies for a game is probably one of the worst things you can do. It stunts the growth and development as a whole. I guess it doesn't really matter for SCBW, since all the strategies are explored, but being secretive about a build is very detrimental to a new game.

Yeah, it was a thor. I have played a few more games; won a couple, lost a couple. I think I will play some AI games to get use to the tech trees and build orders rather than 'winging it'.

I can see how this game would have a really steep learning curve, even for people returning from SC1. There is a LOT of new stuff that takes getting used to.
I was following the development since day 0 and the first game I played I still felt overwhelmed by all the new mechanics.
After about 300 or so games (since march) I've gotten pretty comfortable and am just now exploring off-beat and non-standard builds.

I played SC to death. Mostly multiplayer in the later years though; my favourite strategy was a low-tech brute-force Protoss army, consisting of mainly Zealots, Dragoons and a few Dark Templar. Ah, the memories.

Favorite race: Terran (I know boring)
Best race: Protoss
Favorite unit: Hydralisk
Figure that one out.
Basically my strategy was to pump out zealots as fast as I could to defend against early rush and possibly counterstrike. Against most people that was usually enough to win. If not, it was a tech race to get to carriers while turtling with upgraded zealots and photon cannons. The same strategy works well in SC2 except the ground mechs are pretty good too.
Same for zerg with me. Pump out zerglings and defend early rush. Except if I wanted to get anything done, I needed hydralisks.
I sucked as terran. I had a habbit of using the creeping bunker strategy except with seige tanks and escorting them with goliaths + SCV. Totally screwed when air units came into play. Terrans just needed a more variety of units to be any good with me.
