An acute overdose of caffeine, usually in excess of 250 milligrams, can result in a state of central nervous system over-stimulation called caffeine intoxication.
i read that exactly 1 second after I skulled 4 no-doz tablets... no-doz tablets are 100mg.
no wonder i'm an insomniac.

I just occasionally drink tea and rarely drink coke. I wouldn't be at risk, although 4 cokes and it will be a sleepless night.

Throw in 45-60 minutes of exercise a day, less coffee, and you will sleep like a champ! Shoot for 8 hours

A 20 oz. bottle of soda (such as Mountain Dew) can give me the shakes if I drink it on an empty stomach. I have a little tolerance now (thanks to vitamins with 200 mg of guarana powder/caffeine that I take once in a while), but a single caffeinated beverage can keep me going for at least six hours past when I would normally sleep.

well, i typically have a red bull, a soda, a large coffee, and perhaps a tea throughout my typical day. tis the life of the lonely security guard, working the night shift and trying to stay awake :)

What is it like when you are high on caffiene? Are you able to think better and faster, or are you constantly distracted?

A lot of it depends on how tired I am when I have it. If I am exhausted, caffeine will keep me awake and enable me to focus extremely well on things that don't require too much higher brain function. So doing flashcards, reading, etc. If I am merely tired, I feel as though I got three more hours of sleep. I think there are studies that show that caffeine increases brain function when you are focused on a single thing. I'm guessing writing a paper wouldn't go as well (actually, I don't even need to guess).

What about taking ridilin or addrerol to improve concentration? Even if you don't have ADHD

i took adderall for a short while. didnt really improve my concentration (actually, i thought it kind of made it worse) - but i slept like a baby on it. but i probably didn't need it, and from what i hear if you dont need it then you tend to have the opposite effect.

They make them in sizes? The 250mL can has 80 mg of caffeine. An 8 ounce (240 mL) cup of drip coffee has somewhere around 135 mg. A 12 ounce (355 mL) Mountain Dew has 54.5 mg.
There's a nifty little chart about half-way down on the right side here-- To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.
I drink a pot of coffee every day, and I don't notice any difference compared to when I "miss" a day.

yep! they have 250, 355, and 500 ml cans now! i like the 355 size myself.
here's an interesting tidbit for you. caffeine has an effect on increasing blood pressure. i, personally suffer from LOW blood pressure. it runs in my family. i've always wondered if my need or craving for high doses of caffeine is my body's way of compensating for it.

Low blood pressure too, i drink what family and friends refer to as 'truckers coffee' (if they have any...it's half a cup of coffee, and diluted with tap water to fill it) always wondered if it was some form of self medication.

That is a dumb idea, particularly if you are studying for a test. People assume their main problem in studying is concentration. However, just because you can stay focused longer doesn't mean your ability to retain information gets better (it gets much much worse, in fact).

DON'T DO IT! (I apologize to the anti-caps lock people out there)
I've heard horror stories about it.
Plus, it's made for people who are ADHD. Normal people aren't supposed to take it. Don't take drugs if you don't have to.
I've seen it have really bad side effects on people too when they shouldn't be taking it.

This is true. I take amphetamines for ADD, both adderall and dexedrine. For me, they have a powerful (and necessary) calming and focusing effect. On the other hand, for people who do not have ADD, they have practically the opposite effect. Think racing thoughts, bouncing of the walls, jittering around, etcetera.

I second this. Amphetamines are a powerful drug, and really aren't in the realm of self-prescription. If you don't know what you're doing (read: If you aren't a psychiatrist), you can really screw yourself up.

For psychoactives, particularly stimulants, it's not easy to draw a line between normal effects and intoxication. Caffeine is the national drug of the USA, and its stimulant effects power a lot of people. But where does stimulant turn into intoxicant?
Another factor you really have to take into account is tolerance to caffeine, and to stimulants in general. I drink on average 3 Red Bulls per day. Caffeine doesn't intoxicate me, but it does help give me some driving force. But even the increased alertness, focus, and attention span are psychoactive effects.

Back to the original question.....
About a pot a day, plus a few cans of caffeinated soda. My pulse is around 60 bpm, and I tremble like a sleeping rock. So I imagine "caffeine intoxication" resembles being awake.

Then they need to adjust their dosage a bit, then it can be used as a tool.
But once you know the advantages of this certain chemical, it may be a little hard to forget about it (but this depends per persona's).
They tend do work a bit different for people who really have ad(h)d, but you still will get the (bodily) stimulant properties, at least thats what I read in some scientific literature (sorry too lazy too retrieve them now).
Note: I don't have anything against ritaline/dex-amph usage, some people can benefit tremendously from this medication.

"I drink a crap ton of caffine and it does nothing to me!"
Your body learns to compensate for it. The blood pressure effects stop and the rush stops after that. Some people even get a headache if they suddenly stop taking it.
So.. makes you feel good if you are taking it
goes away if you keep taking it
makes you feel bad if you stop (some people)
understand how it hooks ;)
For occasional use it can be useful, if the higher blood pressure isnt detrimental to your health.

Yep, serious headaches when you stop. Goes away with a Motrin and a gallon of water, though.

My neuropsych teacher said it was the blood vessels in your head being wide open when you are used to having them constricted. Don't know if she was talking about something with solid proof or just guessing about her own condition.

That may be the mechanical cause of the headache, I don't know, but the overall malady is caffeine withdrawal. Caffeine is highly addictive.

Only 250mg? I'm guessing they're referring to the point when you start feeling more paranoid and jumpy, haha. But for someone who frequently uses caffeine, to hit this point its much higher than 250mg.

I usually drink a full pot (60 ounces) of coffee every day. If my simple arithmetic is right, that means that in a regular work day, I consume between 980 and 1500 mg of caffeine. Of course, it's spread out over the day, and in the mean time, it's diluting in my system and getting eliminated.
Either way, I've never felt anything that I'd call intoxication. I don't even get hyper or all jazzed up or anything like that. Maybe I should try tripling my dosage. Hey, that gives me an idea for something to do this weekend.

I tried them as concentration enhancers, I didn't care for them, they made me too jittery. I've had good results with modafinil to fight mental fatigue though. I don't use it often, sleep is much better but it's not always an option and modafinil doesn't make me jittery like other stimulants.

I'm going to become intoxicated tonight. I'm taking a caffeine pill, drinking a bottle of iced tea, a bottle of Mountain Dew, and eating dark chocolate. Around 400-500 mg, according to Wikipedia. I have a paper due tomorrow. :(

I have one maybe two cups of coffee a day. however, I use 44 grams of coffee for a 6 cup pot and that equals abotu two cups of coffee. So I just take my coffee concentrated. I haven't worked out teh caffeine intake.. I believe it's a lot though.

I also remember the 250mg number from Psych class. In the DSM-IV, acute caffeine intoxication is diagnosable.

I drink 1-2 cups of coffe a day. My body works caffeine out of my system really efficiently (so far). I have a noticable caffeine spike for about one hour, after which I can easily fall asleep if I need to. Some people can't have iced tea past noon, or they'll be awake fro hours that night. I can have a strong cup of coffe with dinner and zonk out at 9pm!
I also 'suffer' from low blood pressure. I remember getting a physical and the doctor asking me if I felt alright and need to lay down or anything :)
That may be the mechanical cause of the headache, I don't know, but the overall malady is caffeine withdrawal. Caffeine is highly addictive.
Hmm. I've not heard the nerve thing before but I concur on the caffeine withdrawal thing.
I was a HUGE caffeine addict for years...I started out consuming more and more of it because I was keeping an impossible schedule where I never got enough sleep. I'm a person who really only needs 4-5 hours to make it through a day. More if I can get it, but those 4-5 hours leave me perfectly functional. Anyway, I had a period where I was trying to get a business off the ground AND working a job that required a 40 minute commute each way. So 2 or 3 hours was the max I was getting...and it turned into a Red Bull for breakfast with a Diet Coke chaser. Before I knew it almost every thing I was drinking had caffeine in it. I even somehow managed to find caffeinated water. I drank coffee, tea, more soda, an energy drink here and there...all day every day. Of course with caffeine being a diuretic, it was a constant in and out flow, if you know what I mean. ;)
After things settled down I went on a diet and that forced me to break the caffeine addiction. It was a very structured plan where you are not allowed caffeine at all. Though I was committed to following the plan, I was not happy about the caffeine thing. I tried cutting caffeine cold turkey and no dice...I had a huge headache...so intense that I couldn't even function. After 2 days of this, I gave up - I drank a half a soda and with a few Advil, the headache passed. It took several days of this and each day I cut back the soda more until I finally went a day without a headache. Whew. It was not easy!
Now I consume hardly any caffeine at all...I replaced all the other beverages with water. In the interest of variety I try all different kinds...right now I am stuck on Glaceau smartwater...good stuff! I will still drink a soda when I go out to eat or something but sometimes days go by without me having one...at least not the caffeinated kind. I do enjoy a diet root beer or something every few days but that's caffeine free.
So...yes...caffeine is some seriously addictive stuff!

No-Doz tablets are 200mg, at least in my country.
I popped about 5 onces.
Made me have fun for a couple hours. Then I got reallly paranoid and anxious.
But aye, "intoxication" is just a loaded word. Don't let the man scare you.

Not a fan of Red Bull.
I tried it once in a 50:50 Red Bull to Jaegermeister ratio. The synergistic result of 2 drinks that taste pretty horrible on their own was a monster in itself. Bleh...
Nevertheless, it made for fun times and great memories as my friends and I did the Red Bomb rounds before going skiiing in a blizzard.

yeah, caffeine withdrawal headaches. i can get those. they last about quarter to about half a day sometimes. i rarely ever get headaches except for perhaps sleeping in a room without enough oxygen or maybe letting my blood sugar get screwy from too much sugar and/or sugar-like consumption. not smoking for a day or two or more doesn't even give me headaches. no headaches from not smoking but, after getting used to 2 or 3 cups of very strong black coffee over several days...stopping or skipping a day will likely be noticed. i actually don't like this cycle. time to narrow it's range and get a bit more control here i think.

I used to 'dose up' on a red bull substitute called Kick (UK) during my GCSE exams getting on for 10 years ago. It came in 1 litre bottles and I used to drink at least 1.5 bottles a day for a period of two weeks around exam periods.
It was very effective for revision. In fact, I remember being behind at school, buying an A-Level Physics-in-a-Week workbook, and finishing it in a day and got a good grade with the help of Red Bull!
I have tried withdrawl, but after the initial few days of headaches and generally feeling shite, I just wasn't operating at the same level of mental speed to which I am accustomed. I kept off it for a month, and only saw drawbacks, so now I still drink alot.
Typically, I will drink between 3-5 coffees, and about 1 litre of pepsi on work days, and less coffee but more pepsi at weekends. Is that pretty bad, or typical?
