novels turned movies

is it just me or i'm pissed off whenever movie makers butcher a novel, i.e. queen of the damned just to name one. i think anne rice is also pissed off when she saw the movie. she did not collaborate with the screenplay for qotd but she did in interview with a vampire.

lotr was quite clean except for gandalf wearing rubber shoes and aragorn losing his horse...

so ummm... what novels do you think should be put up on screen?

I would like to see The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum and The Bourne Legacy. I would also like to see Primal Fear, and Batman: Cataclysm.

Usually if I've read the book, I'll hate the movie for missing the important details.
But if I watched the movie first and loved it, I'll hate the book for being long and stretched out.

I usually prefer to read the book first, and then hate the movie.

I think it'd be really cool if they made a movie out of Garth Nix's Abhorsen trilogy...
But I know it's going to ruin it for me. When you read a book, you just get your own little imagination going and have expectations of how it's going to be. Movies usually shatter those... unless you direct it yourself =/

directors are artists, and their rendering of a novel, whether or not their intentions were pure or driven by the dollar, is fair game.

i like to wheel of time on the big screen... good luck to whoever will be filming it... lol... diablo as well. although this is actually a pc game then novels written based on the game's story... definitely, this one would scare a lot of kids and will be banned by the vatican (?)

this one made sense and i would also credit anara's idea. although i've watched the movie lotr first, i was pissed off with tolkien for being so encyclopedic than narrative so the book was pretty boring and you have to pause for a minute just trying to picture a scene unlike narnia, when you read, pictures come into your mind automatically (yey for intj!). i do accept they have different styles but tolkien is way too boring for me.. so for lotr, it's kudos for the director and screenplay writer. i can't imagine orlando bloom would look like portraying the novel legolas - running and skipping around and singing elven songs wherever they went. legolas's a bit perky in the novel so probably if they made legolas perky on film, people won't doubt if the orlando-gay/bi issue comes. ;D

I also want to mention The Historian by Elizabeth Costova. Similar to the Da Vinci Code, dangerous mission from the past and so on, except cooler :thumbsup:
I was alright with the Da Vinci code movie. Haven't read the book yet so I can't judge. But it'd be interesting to see The Historian on film.

One that I thought was equally good in film and novel was HHGG. I didn't get around to finishing the second book though. I'm currently wondering if they're coming up with a movie for the next novel.

Books whose corresponding movies sucked: the whole Harry Potter series... I gave up on the movies... well the books too, but I wanted to know what happens... INTJ need to finish; Ella Enchanted, it was one of my favorite book in my childhood... the movie was horrible... beyond horrible...

he should've written a history separate from the lord of the rings. i do think he was too focused in the entire lotr that he has to jam all the history part. when i finished the hobbit, my friends gave me a congratulatory cheer for the patience. lotr1 i also finished but with a major migraine. lol

Any Matthew Reilly book. Those books are made for the big screen, they read like action movie scripts

Hehe, well queen of that Damned was an okay movie if you ignore the book. The sound track was awesome. But apart from getting one name right, it pretty much butchered the book.

I would love to see Dragonlance Chronicles and Legends on the big screen. As long as it is made in "Peter Jackson style".

American Gods could make a good movie.

I'd also like a decent and satisfying Dune movie. The 1984 movie was so-so and the TV mini-series was really boring.

I, Robot is a sterling example of how not to handle literature turned into a movie. (Technicality: it wasn't a novel but rather a collection of interconnected short stories, but that's not important.) The only thing that movie had in common with Isaac Asimov's book was the title. A travesty.

One of the best and most faithful adaptations was Graham Greene's The Quiet American. Great book and great film. Perhaps because his novels are so short and so compact, and easily followable in terms of plot, that makes it easier. I recall the adaptation of Greene's The End of the Affair quite faithful to the book, as well.

I'm currently reading The Golden Compass and once I'm finished I plan on catching the movie. We'll see how they compare. The book is really good, BTW!

I would love to see The Dark Elf trilogy by RA Salvatore, but they would have to spend some money on it. Some cheap version would piss me off.

No it wasn't :( The book was BEYOND the movie. The storyline was almost completely different. The Lost World was even more distant from its movie.

OK..there were some line for line details different but I thought it was closer than it might have been. no flyers, no tera-dome, etc plus the story of the creation..but the action scenes, actors were the same i thought..maybe its been too many years since i read it :(

The biggest change in Jurassic Park that bugged me was the characterization of John Hammond. In the movie, he was the kind grandfather but in the book, he was just a focused on the future/goal prick.

I also was annoyed that some of the scenes in the book didn't make it into the movie (not to mention the "happy" ending in the movie). The book also, to me, had a much darker tone in terms of scenes and overall feel whereas the movie seemed... not lighthearted but not as dark as I pictured it.

I'm usually very interested in the history of a really good fantasy story. But not before I've read the story in the first place.

I still haven't picked LOTR back up since I first bought it (when LOTR the movie first came out)

Cutting out Tom Bombadil has to have been the best thing the LoTR film crew did. He was a throwback to the sort of story The Hobbit was, and had little place in a mile-long Epic, where everything should be relevant.
