View Full Version : Do you own the entire discography of one artist?

I just want to see if anyone here really loves a band rather than simply dabbling in them. So, do you own every single studio album, EP, whatever, that a band/artist has put out? Music videos, DVDs, live concerts, etc. don't count, just musical compositions.
Based on that criteria, I own the entire discography of Tool (everything from Opiate to 10,000 Days) and have probably listened to every song at least 3 times (notice I said three, crap like the "Swamp Song" off of Undertow is abhorrent) and about half of Led Zeppelin's discography. I used to own almost all of NIN's, but I gave away every album except Year Zero. I'm slowly getting most of Pink Floyd's discography, but I'll probably never complete it as A Momentary Lapse in Reason isn't that good apart from "Learning to Fly".

The only artists I have full discographies of are those with like, one or two albums. Otherwise, I can't be bothered. All of them have good, average and bad songs, and I can't see the point of taking up space on my hard disk (which is already very full, for some mysterious reason) for songs that I'm never going to listen to. I've had full discographies before, like, 7 albums. I ended up deleting 90% of the songs.
Oy. Fine. If you count Beethoven. But it's at best a very incomplete attempt at a discography. I have all of his symphonies and piano sonatas, but you and I both know he wrote a helluva lot more works than that. I love every single one of them. That man is legend.

they're far better than what you hear in no rain, possibly my favourite band.

well, the intent of the OP was to determine true love towards a musical entity above and over other bands.. that doesn't apply to me in the cases I own the entire collection. I just have it.. my favorite music I actually don't have hte entire disco or I don't love everything that the band produced and so keep it to the albums I did like.
the disco sets I own are
the police
the beatles
fleetwood mac.
I haven't actually listened to any of these for a few years. I haven't put in a single DVD in a few years actually. I rarely listen to music anymore. I listen to satellite radio in the car now and again but I don't just listen to music anymore.

mal,
I don't have audio on my home computer but I'll try to check that out at work Monday. I do know Hoon and Rose were friends and both hailed from Indiana. On top of owning almost all of Zep's catalogue, I also own several rare discs of outtakes or concert bootlegs. The outtakes are incredible to get to see their progression through rehearsing a song and grinding it out.
azel,
When I was a kid I never understood why all thirtysomethings like Sting/Police. I thought his stuff was really boring but the older I get the more I appreciate his music. I actually really enjoy Sting now and I also happen to be 30. lol. I think now that I'm older I realize "good music" doesn't have to be complicated. His stuff is pretty pure.
Orbital
Isn't Chime and Impact on the Satan Live Yellow single possible the best piece of live dance music EVER recorded????? :lovestruck:
It's EPIC!!!
Recorded at the V96 festival I think.
Can't remember for sure.
Amazing track(s) though, way better than the album versions.

Went right out and bought it on the release date.

Just Pearl Jam (nine studio albums, Lost Dogs, rearviewmirror, and other assorted singles). I guess I have over 150 Pearl Jam songs. I still haven't seen them live though but I'm working on it.
I'm not even close with any other band (I think three studio albums from Oasis is as close as I get).

I suppose we'll have to disagree. Riot Act, in particular, is one of my favorite albums and is very underappreciated. Pearl Jam (album) and Backspacer are both good in their own way (almost as good as Yield and Vitalogy in my opinion). I will agree that No Code, and especially Binaural, are Pearl Jam's weakest albums but both have value in offering a unique sound.

I could claim to own full discographies of several artists, but that wouldn't really be fair since a great number of them have discogs that consist entirely of 1-3 singles. Such is the electronic underground.
But there are at least two artists that actually have semi-large collections which I own in their entireties: ATB and Poets of the Fall. I don't count ATB's mix CDs because they are stupid and consist of other artists' work.
Poets of the Fall release another album in two weeks, so I'll have to buy that to continue to make that claim. I probably will.
Yup, Tool and Bad Religion foremost.

hmm..not sure i have ever owned copy of every song/album put out by any artist/band. However, I have off and on or over the years attempted to collect everything put out by Fish (not Phish), Marillion (Fish era), Floyd, David Gilmour, Roger Waters, The Who, Roger Daltry, Yes, GTR, Jon Anderson, Steve Hackett, Asia, Simon Says, The Box, The Reasoning, Jo McCafferty, Molly Hatchett, Skynyrd, Susan Tedeshi, Eva Cassidy, Headful of Monsters, Glyder, Wishbone Ash, Aimee Mann, Rush, Ayreon, Streams of Passion (love Arjen Lucassen, Lori Linstruth, and Floor Jansen especially Arjen project albums like Into The Electric Castle, Star One, Human Equation and one particular song on newest album, E equals MC squared), and oh so much more artists/bands I love listening to and pends upon mood I am in. I LOVE Frost* as well. Declan's voice truly adds to the passion behind the intensity of this concept and progressive based music. I enjoy classical music too which I favored Vivaldi's Four Seasons in particular.

I own very few live albums, because, as a rule, I hate them. If I want to hear the band live, I go see them live. I went to Germany just to see Running Wild live, so no trip is too far if I am determined. Best trip of my life!
After looking at my CDs's thinking I don't have any complete artists now, I do have the complete Gin Blossoms catalog - 2 Cd's.
Some bands were complete for a while, then I moved on or they put out crap. U2 until Achtung Baby. Boston's first 3 albums. Van Halen thru 5150. Led Zep and Pink Floyd until the early 80s, when both groups ran out of good music.
How about bands that only put out one album? I had the albums from these no-hit or one-hit wonders of the mid 70s to early 80s, long ago tossed in the trash....Couchios, Max Demian Band, Billion Dollar Babies, The Muffs, the Elevators, Moving Pictures, Marc Tanner Band, Goanna, UK, GTR.
