This verdict baffles my mind. It appears that Google cooperated and abided by the law to me. Am I missing something?

Really. The vid was up for hours (not days) and they helped in the investigation. The Italians can't seriously expect them to pre screen every vid that gets posted. WTF.

Italy. They were probably shaken down and refused to pay. Enough said.

The law is looking to point the finger at someone. The downs kid? No. The underage taunters? No. The parents? No. Hmmm. Who has money and is high profile enough for the gov't to look like it's doing its job.... hmmmmm.....
Oh. Yes. Executives. JAIL THEM!

I wonder whether this is a politicized ruling, and whether it'll have any bearing as a precedent. If so, I can imagine the Italian executive branch doing its best to take advantage of this case, seeing as their president is very fond of censorship.

The Italian Pres doesn't need censorship... he owns ALL the media in Italy does he not?
Maybe that's the problem... he doesn't own enough of Google...
I can't fault Google in this case; and they appear aware of the dangers inherent in their business and actively trying to mitigate those dangers.
They do, however, need to take responsibility for what it put up on YouTube.
This case is bogus. But it's only one country...

Sounds like a terrible precedent and slap in the face to freedom of expression. It encourages video sites to err on the side of PC to cover their asses.
Other idiot teenagers have been nabbed for bragging about criminal or abusive activity through video. Preventing this stuff from reaching the public is taking away the rope they use to hang themselves.

Italy has some strange laws. I remember a story (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.) about an Italian family who wanted to name their child Friday and were forced by the courts to change the name to Gregory.
In light of that, this ruling isn't really surprising.

Italy is hereby convicted in the Court of Angel1 on the following charges:
Being a laughing stock to civilized government.
Failure to indulge in intelligent thought before performing government duties.
Delegitimizing their court system through sheer corruption.
The Court of Angel1 hereby sentences Italy to:
Growing up!
Submitting all legal decisions to an international joint court consisting of the highest courts of the English-speaking peoples.
Receiving a brain transplant, as clearly they have failed to grow one by themselves.
This fictional session of the Court of Angel1 is hereby adjourned.
Seriously, if I were charged or about to be charged with a crime in Italy, I would flee the jurisdiction back to the United States. When they came looking for extradition I would fight it to the United States Supreme Court. I would not be surprised to see people fighting extradition to Italy on the grounds that the Italian judicial system is a joke.
