I've watched some anime :o I've watched Trigun, Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop and I follow Bleach and Naruto. Bleach can be a little retarded for my tastes at times... they start playing this strange music and the characters start acting really dumb. Overall it's not bad though. Naruto used to be silly, but I find it's alot better now. My friend makes fun of anime after I tried to show him a couple Trigun episodes: "OMG I just turned into a cat for no reason!" He really liked Cowboy Bebop though, but they don't have that same 'omg I'm now a cat' anime style like some of the others do.

I also really like Evangelion. I read more then watch Naruto and Bleach, cuts down on the silliness put in by the Anime writers.
I also like Fate/Stay Night, Black Lagoon, Rurouni Kenshin, and Ergo Proxy along with a few other shorter series.

I've watched and liked Evangelion, Ruruoni Kenshin, Ghost in the Shell, Full Metal Alchemist. I'm also updated on Naruto. Anybody also think Naruto is coming to a crucial point? I think they may kill off Jiraiya as a plot device very soon.

Will do, Guido.
at Sohrab: Yeah I've seen FMA too. It like the manga, but the anime got a little too...self-sacrificing for my tastes. And the movie? Never happened. It. Never. Happened.
Okay I have to ask, does anyone here watch Anime or read Manga besides me?
Well, I don't know about you, but I enjoy me some One Piece!
I haven't really been keeping up with the manga, though. Currently, I'm only watching Gurren-Lagann. I can't really stand watching too much anime, though. When it's good, it's good, but when it's bad, it's so bad, just like American television.
I can't believe anime has infected this forum too...
By the way, I heard fate stay night was good. *It looked good on the commercials I saw, but I also got some bad rep about it.
But yeah... anime has been abandoned after ... grade 10 or so... So I'm sadly outdated *
Besides, American dubbing SUCKS!

So do I! I just didn't really want to mention it because I fear that most people are unaware of the "real" One Piece, not the mutilated version that 4Kids put out.
At Rei: Comics don't have filler. Nuff said.

Anime yes, Manga not so much (mostly because I can't find a good source in these here parts).
My favorites;
- Ghost in the Shell (+ all 3 movies)
- Noein
- Cowboy BeBop
- Full Metal Alchemist
- Evangelion
- Naruto
- Kakurenbo (1 short movie, but awesome IMO)
Comics don't have filler. Nuff said.
Well I don't watch anime with filler.
It sucks that since anime got popular, the production of those have declined exponentially. And hence, I haven't watched new anime in years.
Tarrick

Yeah Rei. It's sad to think, but Rurouni Kenshin was killed off before it's third arc because of bad filler. Thing is, is that the companies can make Anime episodes a lot faster then the Mangaka (the author) can write equal length in Manga.
I KNOW!
I loved RRK... until it started having the exact same episodes but with different characters...
Name some good ones...
I think one of the best EVER was Tenkuu no Escaflowne... though the American AND the Chinese dub screwed it over. I watched the japanese version that was badly subbed...
I watched Evangelion in Chinese. I had no eff-ing clue what the heck they were talking about 80% of the time.

I read Manga as well as watch Anime! You kind of have to if you want to make either of them on your own (spare time).
I generally read Bleach and Naruto in the stead of watching it. This is because I hate all of the fillers that the Animes have to offer. The actual storyline has lots of development. I don't rightly care about my favorite characters playing soccer for absolutely no reason at all.
I did enjoy watching Trigun, Fullmetal Alchemist, FLCL, Big O, Samurai X (OVAs), Advent Children, and various other shorter Animes where there are little to no fillers, and the story line has more substance than "OMG LET'S COMPARE POWER LEVELS!"...

Props!
Though the problem with that is that it really limits you to the anime with subs available.

Agreed. Subs are a lot more accurate, assuming it was done competently.
And Apococlock: How about fighting Animes that ultimately devolve into a unfairly managed fighting tournament?

To Guido: 10-4
To Tarrick: Haven't seen the manga. As for the movie, it was made just to provide closure for the fans.
The poll: Manga definitely for the plot development, although some action sequences can only be given justice in Anime.

Closure? CLOSURE?! That wasn't closure! Besides it never happened.
The manga is much better and the plot is a lot more in depth.

I can't believe I missed this topic. I love both Anime and Manga. I haven't been watching much Anime lately because I don't like the American dubbing. I mostly watch it on the internet where I can get the subtitled versions. As for Manga, I read that online too (wish I could buy them just for the sake of having them, but alas my school books and tuition take up all my money).

To Tarrick: Let me rephrase that...The movie was made to give closure for the fans of the anime. The ending left a lot of unanswered question and fans wrote to the producers, thus the movie. I've been reading the manga and I would agree it is a lot more interesting. It diverges considerably from the anime and poses more questions. Another thing is its still unfinished, the best thing about it.

I hate to act like an elitist but naruto and bleach make me cringe :scared:. It's practically an insult to the medium itself because of it's formulaic and filler episodes. It's as if the companies have lost all interest in the storyline and are simply milking the franchise for all it's got. I'm not sure how old you guys are, However, I have found as I have gotten older my tastes have become more and more refined and I can't really tolerate formulaic shows.
I enjoy anime and manga but I have found that many anime/manga "otaku" become more focused on the medium itself as opposed the the content. This seems to be the case of the shonen (catered to young boys like dbz, one piece, etc) series. I really enjoyed Serial Experiments Lain (and all of the artists other shows), Neon Genesis Evangelion I liked as a young teenager however as I've grown older the teen angst is quite apparent :D, all of Hayao Miyazakis films (spirited away, mononoke, etc.) and more recently I was quite fond of Monster.
As far as manga goes the only two I've really found enjoyable are GANTZ and Berserk. Absolutely fantastic manga catered to 18+ (not neccessarily pornographic).

That's all good... I'm well aware of the problems with those 2 series, but I watch them anyways :-[ I have skipped many dumb filler episodes as they are pretty pointless. Also, they can sometimes have excessive 'recaps' that fill in an episode so you only get 5 mins of new 'progress' which is also really annoying. When the shows are actually done properly (not many are... but enough for me to keep watching) and progress with the story, they can be pretty good.
Have you seen Trigun or Cowboy Bebop? Those ones are probably my favorite.

10-04-2007, 06:58 PM
I've seen all of Trigun and random episodes of Cowboy Bebop. I don't think I enjoyed them that much, I had really high hopes for Trigun because I heard so much praise for it. I think it's because I really value identifying with the characters and I didn't feel any connection to them. I would seriously recommend checking out the titles I listed previously. If you aren't aware of how to acquire the series(es) look into how bittorrent works and what the popular trackers are. It's really the most convenient route to grab them.

I was interested in watching SEL. I spent so long downloading it *cough*...
And then I watch the first episode, and gave up on it. Maybe the first bit is just slow or it was badly subbed, but I had no clue what they were getting at.

It deals heavily with existential themes. You should really give it another try, the story it picks up considerably. Some have said the entire story is an elaborate messiah metaphor but you'll have to watch it and theorize on what you think happened. I agree there is a "WTF did I just watch?" but for me it was more like "Wow that was awesome, what the hell did I just watch?" than I proceeded to analyze the series and research all the concepts they brought up so I can could gain an understanding of where they were coming from.

Perhaps. A lot of people seem to like it. Though I wonder if the subject matter is a bit too serious.
By the way, I grew up watching Hayao Miyazaki. I there are probably only about 2 films by Studio Ghibli that I haven't watched.

Not really. Cowboy Bebop, which I love, is the rare exception for me.

I would rather watch Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy.

WOW. Thanks for brining this up! I just started watching after seeing your post, and WOW. I've been applauding like crazy for the first eight episodes. The plot is very intuition-based. I love Death note. Especially L, as my avatar would imply.
I've watched all of DNAngel and Gundam Seed, and like both. I watched them at a friends house when we stayed there for a week. Gundam Seed took 2 days to watch, when we watched it.
I like xxxholic, Tsubasa, Fruits basket, Hibiki's magic, Black cat, and others that I can't remember the names of. I tend to read whatever is recommended to me, which probably accounts for my rather diverse list of shonen and shojo.

Thanks for this recommendation. Death Note ROCKS! Even my ESFP spouse (who has a hidden intuitive side) loved the series. It's true, there are several episodes of filler, but it's definitely worth watching. They go into what each character is thinking, and people act like adults most of the time. I don't think there's any point where characters break character for the sake of the plot, and that's really saying something.
Not to mention, L has the same attachment to food I do. Him giving away food is meaningful: "If you keep this a secret, you can have this strawberry." I got that IMMEDIATELY. :)

I prefer anime to american style cartoons. American cartoonists appear to think that cartoons are not a valid medium and should be created only for children. Their artwork is shoddy and their storylines are pathetic. I like the mainstream comics of america; batman, lucifer, sandman, wormwood, however most japanese manga just fucking pwns.
It's all about style and substance. Justice League Animated, and Teen Titans Animated are retarded, whereas their comic form are not.
As answer to your question, I do too.

My first attraction to anime was the fact that the animations were so clean, crisp well drawn. This was becoming more and more apparent because I began to notice around the late 90's, American cartoons began to look so... ugly.

Just an example, people.
I must say I'm very biased against ugly cartoons. While I understand that it's a different style... I just like the smooth "nice" organized graphics.
It's just like video games. I think they totally ruined that Zelda game for the gamecube by making it all kiddy-like.
Another point is... american cartoons don't seem to have much of a story. Most of them are just... stupid =/
I mean, it's amazing how many scenarios people could come up with to show the characters' stupidity.
Note on deathnote:
I think Raito was... just a tad crazy. He's beyond emotionless... and that's not cool.
I know L probably HAD to die, but him dying really just made me stop reading.

"Just say NO to ugly cartoons."
Perhaps most animes/mangas seem to have more substance becuase they intentionally end at some point. They follow the formula for a good story, plot, rising action, climax, falling action, conclusion, etc. *unlike American cartoons that have pointless "adventures" with no progression into the next episode. Also, there aren't as many sub genres in American cartoons. Animes can vary from comedy to action to drama.
I enjoyed watching Light's progression into a madman. He was clearly "normal" at first (he even became physically sick when he first used the Death Note). He forcibly ignored his emotions because he saw them getting in the way of his goal. That, and he became drunk on power, of course *:P
Note on deathnote:

Oh noes Rei! You leaked a spoiler! *:scared:
But yeah, I enjoyed Light vs L rather than Light versus Near. Near lacked so much character compared to L. Did you notice that as soon as L died, a lot of characters became involved in the story? And yet, they STILL couldn't fill Lawliet's void *;)

L dying did make the series go downhill somewhat, but mostly to me because Raito became too confident in his abilities and thus didn't make such ingenious plans anymore. He got pwned.

Reading this thread made me curious, as I've never watched anime before, so I checked out Death Note. Now I'm completely hooked; I've already watched the first 15 episodes in the last two days. Curse you, INTJForum! :P
I've always liked the style of art that anime has, but I guess I've never bothered to look further into it. Death Note is probably my favorite new show now, and far better than any other animated shows I've seen. I actually don't mind that it's in Japanese; in fact, I'd rather read the English subs instead of listening to a translated version. I could have done without the spoilers posted above, though. :(
Anyways, if anyone hasn't watched anime before, I highly recommend watching Death Note - at least watch the first two episodes. I'll definitely check out some other anime shows.

Garn. *Sounds like something that I should look into. *Anyways, I read manga and watch anime. *It is tragic, but I know very little of the stuff besides what I've seen on television and later researched. *I know of most of the stuff that has been mentioned here, though. *Favorites: *Full Metal Alchemist (I recently re-read it. *Yay Hughes! *sniff*), Cowboy Bebop (Yay Jet, obviously), Oban Star Racers (Recently made, and surprisingly decent. *Yay Don Wei!), and those Hayao Miyazaki films, of course. *
Sure, there might be some other especially cool ones, but I just listed the first that came to brain. *Lots that were mentioned are the sort to provide mild amusement or statements like, "Huh. *Well, that's a cool idea. *It is a pity that it wasn't attached to a story with cooler characters." Others are just a little too kiddish, for myself. *Oo! *Read Or Die stuff is fun. *A person here called bibliophile made me remember that. *::)
Oh. *Also, I am not an especially visually-oriented person. *I read manga and watch anime pretty evenly, but I like that music is attached to anime.

My favorite anime is definately Serial Experiments Lain. Wow, just wow. I like Neon Genesis Evangelion, Ghost in the shell and Hellsing aswell.
The beginning of Ayashi No Ceres is amazing, but as the storyline progresses, its plot fades into standard romantic drama.
It surprises me noone mentioned 'Beyond the Clouds' yet. This has to be the most excelent anime movie I have ever seen. I can really recommend it to anyone.
It involves an alternate timeline in which Japan is split in two after World War 2 (like Germany once was, and Korea still is), with one part is under Sovjet Union control and one part under VS control. 'Strangely' enough, the Union in this setting is rich and prospering and much more technologically advanced. In this Union controlled part of Japan a tower is build, which is able to replace the existing universe with parallel universes. The film then deals with everything from dreams to coma's to parallel universes to quantum mechanics and how the flow of reality affects the human mind in all this.
Ofcourse it is 'just a story', but if you like Evangelion or Lain, you will like this too.

1) DEATH NOTE! (as made obvious from my avatar. Oh Light Yagami, you card! <3)
2) Evangelion
3) Dragon Ball Z (shameful, I know ^_~).
4) Golden Boy (Dubbed version is surprisingly amazing)
5) Cowboy Bebop (^)
6) Milk Chan (^)
7) Inuyasha (subbed version only. Oh god the English dub makes my ears bleed.)
8) Paranoia Agent

I take my sci-fi in anime form, as well as some of my comedy and drama. Currently enjoying Blood+ and Death Note off and on on Adult Swim. Might watch Full Metal Panic seasons 1 and 2 soonly as well, but I'm currently gaming and I try to only do one or the other so it's not taking up all of my time.

Has anyone watched X the series? I recently completed the last episode and I certainly thought it was interesting, though the story is a bit confusing, I may have watch it again to figure things out.
Other than this I also enjoyed Death Note very much, and I also like Gundam Wing for it's epic storyline and its interesting characters, as opposed to the battle scenes.
Also the OAV of Rurouni Kenshin was very good, it is different from the series, much darker and with blood and stuff.
I also enjoyed Sorcerous Stabber Orphen because it had magic and dragons and stuff :), though I was still younger when I saw that, dont know if I still liked it today.

I love Anime. Some of my favorite animes are:
Full Metal Alchemist!!!!!
Death Note
Claymore (up until episode 24)
Ouran High School Host Club (Another favorite of mine)
Fruit's Basket (one of my favorite animes)
Naruto (I hate the fillers and how they drag out the episodes, but I love the manga. I read it off of inaruto.net. I haven't been keeping up lately.)
Getbackers
Noir
Saiyuki
Black Jack.
I finished watching Claymore... it's very different from the original and that irked me. Since I absolutely loved the original (still do, reading it on-time), the ending was very disappointing. Damn you Raki!
Death Note - hmm, I really resemble Light in persona apparently, but I was constantly trying to outsmart him as I read/watched it. I did manage to find a way to kill L much earlier... thereby satisfying my ego that I'm smarter than him :P
Ouran High School - GAH I LOVED THAT SERIES! The ending was very different and there are some missing episodes, but I love episode 23 (I think) when the Yakuza heir is coming to get training. XD
Black Jack - This is what set me onto medicine track in the first place. Though I think I'd turn into Kiriko rather than BJ himself.
I also liked D.Grayman which is playing on TVTokyo, Karakuri Circus which was on shonen Jump (I think), 3x3 Eyes, Jojo's Bizzarre Adventures (Part 5, set in Italy, is probably my favourite, but there's an anime set on Part 3... ), Yuukan Club (I believe it was on Shoujo Margaret), and Battle Royale. Oh, and how could I forget Berserk?
Sailor Moon makes me laugh so hard... :P although I grew up watching it. I also watched Hime-chan no Ribbon (awesomely cute), Magic Knight Rayearth, and Akazukin cha-cha. Can't really remember anything else...

I love anime as an art style. Japanese Animation generally has that time to develope deep meaningful stories, influenced generally by manga.
Animes I loved are,
RaXephon - A series based off music? How does that work? Originally turned off by this theme and outstrech of norm, I later came back to the anime because of that aspect and the prospectives really were enlightening.
Code Geass - This anime really plays with chess pieces. Zero is a character I can relate to and understand, without having to result in his actions to acheive my goals.
Eureka Seven - Sappy love story, great world overmind, new demensions, theories, and hardships that could kick your heart a few more inches into your chest if your a sap too.
Ergo Proxy - Because I love animes that make me think. This one being set in a post apocolyptic world were global warming was more a threat then we expected. BAD on those who used enriched methane as an alternative to fosil fuels!
There is more anime I love but this will do, this will do for now.

hi there!
I don't usually do anime but some of them are a must, like Miyazaki's [Studio Ghibli]
Princess Mononoke and Howl's Moving Castle really kick ass in my opinion; it's more of a western animation using japanese spirit, a combination that is by far the best!
Shinichiro Watanabe also does great stuff with his team in Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo, though their optimism is not as powerful as Ghibli's
Death Note is big challenge, it tells much about how crazy you can get when you're smart enough to be mad and you're not even the only one! haha
otherwise anime's usual comic-ness and cute faces-ness make me wanna scream! not good not good

I have only a couple, mainly DBZ but then again who hasn't. I also tried (and finished) watching Death note, didn't like it. The premise of the anime was good but I found it poorly written and there were just way too many moments when I just kept thinking 'wow what a coincidence'. I find a lot of animes to be like that though.

I've enjoyed anime for years, though I've backed off quite a bit since it's become so disgusting popular in the west.
Subtitled anime has always been a preference for me, opposed to dubbed. I think that the Japanese language has a lovely sound to it, and english dub-overs have a certain style that tends to butcher the entire feel of a series.
However, I've recently turned my attention to manga rather than anime. The novelty of manga has hooked me like a charm, which is a nice feeling, since I seem to have lost my fascination for anime.
I did watch Deathnote, of course. I watched it with my brother, another INTJ, and he texted me after our first viewing and said, "L and Kira are totally INTJ's." I wonder if any of you who've seen Deathnote would agree with this?

Yes, that was my take on Kira. I thought that he could perhaps be an ENTJ, since he seemed more comfortable in social settings than L. But, he could just be an extremely well developed INTJ who has learned good social skills. I'm quite sure he's ENTJ, though.

I'm quite sure he's ENTJ, though.During the first couple of episodes, I thought he might be INTJ, but the way he was able to manipulate Naomi (the FBI agent's fiance) changed my mind. I think the first few episodes were just laying the groundwork, so it hadn't really gotten into his social skills yet. My husband is ENTJ and I saw a lot of similar qualities in Kira.

Ive followed Manga since I was a small child, mainly because I found the stories so original when compared with western comics (not saying they're better or worse, I still reread my old Punisher War Journals). Especially the fact that in most Manga's there is no "Evil" person. Of course there are antagonists, and protagonists. but you tend to find out through the story the reasons for the antagonists actions, or you find out that the motivations of the hero are worse than the so called villain.
But anyways......
I love anything by Masamune Shirow. I even managed to collect most of the original Dark Horse versions of AppleSeed and Orion.
Though I'm deeply saddened by the fact that he focuses almost purely on Hentai now.
So from his list of accomplishments.
-Tank Police
-Orion
-Appleseed
-Ghost in the Shell
Also the Battle Angel Alita Series by Yukito Kishiro is fantastic. The more recent Last Order series is much more juvenile in character, but still a fantastic continuation of that world.
But the more recent ones Ive been following are:
By Tsutomu Nihei
[his art is mind blowing, though he doesnt seem to care at all about dialogue.]
-Blame
-Biomega
-Abbara
-NetSphere engineer
By Hiroki Endo
-Eden
[more post apocalyptic goodness. Hiroki used to work as a medical diagram illustrator, doing dissection diagrams and such. This one is certainly not for the weak of stomach]
By Hiroaki Samura
-Blade of the Immortal
[an Immortal ronin, who can stick himself back together? Thats just awesome. Again an amazing artist, he does most of the panels in one go with a basic brush, and then finishes with pen]
By Makoto Yukimura
Planetes
[a really great example of Hard Scifi. Though I'm enraged at the fact that they stopped the manga to purely pursue the anime version.]
If y'all want some good Scantillation Sites for weekly Shonen or hard to find series checkoot:

I watch bleach when it follows the manga, turn it off when they bring in the filler arcs until they return to the manga. Eps. 1-60 were incredible, its been lackluster recently, but seeing how awesome 1-60 were, I refuse to give up on the series; there will be, one day, another epic fight with ichigo on the scale of his battles with zaraki and byakua...it may take years, but it will come.

Anime is my biggest hobby. I'll watch almost anything that has the potential to get licensed in the states. So, I go through mass amounts of anime in a period of a year. My favorites would be Ouran High School Host Club, Shoujo Kakumei Utena, Death Note (watched it twice), Fullmetal Alchemist, Code Geass (Reminds me of Death Note, just a bit.), Blood +, The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi, and Naruto.
As aforementioned poster pointed out, Bleach hasn't been worth watching since episode 60 or so. Though, I stopped around 130 and check in periodically. Meaning, I'm dead bored and there are no other animes on my "to watch" list I haven't already consumed.

I've been watching anime for several years now. I'll watch just about anything that isn't drawn-out or full of fanservice. My three favorite anime would have to be .hack//SIGN, Hellsing (anime & OVA), and Black Lagoon. I have my reasons for choosing them, but I never get tired of watching them. As far as manga goes, I'm not a big fan. I prefer reading actual literature. The only manga series I keep up with is Hellsing.

Ive perused a copy of Tomie in the bookstore a long time ago, but it didnt tickle my pickle enough to warrant buying it.
Though I'm an avid horror movie fan, horror comics dont really do it for me.....
Not sure if anyone has mentioned FLCL yet in the Anime list. Btw its way better to watch the un-dubbed subtitled version. I feel that Japanese can express ridiculous exclamations far better than english.
Also nobodies mentioned Robotech!!!!!

I haven't read Tomie or seen the movies, but yeah, I hear it's quite popular. Junji does have a couple (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. Note: Relating to the link, the scanlation for the Uzumaki manga was done left to right, rather than right to left. It threw me for a loop at first, then I got used to it.
Seriously, FLCL is classssic.
I'm on book 8 of Death Note and I love the anime. I'm embarrassed to admit that I used to watch Sailor Moon once upon a time. I've seen more anime, naturally, but those are the only two I've ever really been obsessed with.

Saikano (if you can make it through the whole series of Saikano without breaking down and blubbering once, I will get the Wizard to give you a heart)
Berserk (yes!)

I saw some of the English dubs doing outtakes. I didn't really look at them though.
I don't think that any other character in any other book/play/movie/etc. could be as angry as Guts is towards Griffith.

I don't think that any other character in any other book/play/movie/etc. could be as angry as Guts is towards Griffith. He was definitely pretty angry, but I would say Elric of Melnibone's anger towards himself may be stronger. Elric isn't an anime though. It's a series of books my Michael Moorcock.
You should watch the English dub outtakes, my husband and I actually quote them all time. The voice actress for Caska gets so flustered when she screws up and the voice actor for Griffith breaks into song quite frequently. There are references to The Princess Bride and The Little Mermaid. It's just hysterical.

Manga:Loveless (up to date)
If you like Loveless, try Junjou Romantica. Only if your over 18 though. It's not pornographic, but it is adult in nature. I began watching the anime with super low expectations. I was pleasantly surprised. It has to be the very best gay anime I've ever watched. I've yet to see a lesbian anime dealt with on the same quality scale. The writing did the stories and characters justice. It's very maturely approached and realistic. It addresses issues of first love (or not so first love) and feelings people might encounter with being gay.
I wholeheartedly recommend it. I've just started the manga, but I've heard it's a bit more graphic than the anime.

Haven't watched nor read anime and manga for the longest. I kinda got away from all that because I wanted to get real. And most of plots were similiar to each other. They are reminiscent of the poor quality spanish telenovelas my abuelita watches.
Some anime/manga that I used to enjoy (and I still adore some):
Neon Genesis Evangelion, X/1999, Gundam Wing, Gundam Seed, Naruto, Kare Kano, Fruit's Basket, Iron Wok Jan!, Cardcaptor Sakura, Hellsing, Samurai Deeper Kyo, Samurai X (or Rurouni Kenshin), etc. (can't remember them all and don't want to at the moment)
There was a really strong manga that I used to read and I read the novel as well. It was called Battle Royale. Highly recommended but not for the squeamish though. Even the novel gets explicit. But if you want to stretch your humanity, give it a try.

Hah, yeah, I really liked that particular suit back in the day. I also have the Gundam Wing DVDs from their original run, complete with promotional material for Love Hina and other classic shows in the cases. Still watch them from time to time. As much as I love Gundam (and I love Gundam), that dub did not age well.
I hate dubs, but the GW one was alright.
I'm an Epyon and Zero fan as far as suits go, I didn't enjoy the original Gundam though, I did however enjoy Gundam 08th MS team I think it was.
Other than that...Blade of the Immortal comes to mind as far as manga, always got confused because I checked the volumes from a library and they weren't numbered, so I never knew which one went after what.
Nana services my girly-needs, but I get tired of manga/anime as well [I think I like manga better], oh if anyone knows Saint Seiya they get brownie points <3.
I have been trying to find Candy Candy for the longest time, but no luck, I used to watch that when I was a kid.

I love both manga and anime. I tend to be picky though, so it's no surprise I'm running out of new ones to read/watch. Sad, really. Pints of blood would have had to have a high count to make it to my favourites list a while ago, but I've broadened my horizons. With my ridiculously slow internet speed, I guess beggars can't be choosers. :)
Anime:
Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuiokuhen (Surprising, seeing as I usually cringe at animes made before 2000. I'm particularly fond of the music...and the art was much better than the TV series, which I can't stand.)
Hellsing Ultimate/OVA (As if this wasn't already a give away....heh)
Elfen Lied (Blood content = Instant win)
Black Lagoon
Claymore
Samurai Champloo
Basilisk (High quality art really attracted me)
Ouran High School Host Club
Howl's Moving Castle
Manga:
Naruto (An old favourite of mine)
Rurouni Kenshin (The entire series is fine in manga)

I like Death Note a lot. The anime did seem to taper off a bit after L dies. It is a very refreshing departure from action/sex driven themes that tend to dominate anime scripts.
I am watching Code Geass now. The first season takes some time to build up. By episode 20 it goes WAY over the top and finishes strong. R2 is ongoing. Its main fault is being formula driven. Several themes common to anime are jammed into it (school, mecha, some sex, violence, and some pretty heavy Death Note influence especially in R2.) Despite this, I still like the series.
I will have to go back over the numerous lists and check some of these out.

Elfen Lied was the first anime that truly got me looking. It is still one of my all time favorities....especially the intro song. Even if you don't watch the show, the intro and it's song is art in and of itself.
I refuse to watch the dub'd shows though, sub titles and original voice acting clears up a lot of what gets lost in translation when being dub'd. Watching the subs is also a really good way to pick up a sprinkling of Japanese lol. Right now I basically watch anime because you can find it all on the internet and typically you can find a sub'd version two or three days after the show airs in Japan.
Now watching:
-Naruto Shippuden (gave up on the first Naruto, too damn much filler)
-Macross Frontiers (story is only ok but the CG and animation is amazing)
-Several new summer shows which I'm still deciding on
Past Favorites
-Elfen Lied (fantastic story and beautiful intro song)
-Full Metal Panic Series(good story and characters, pretty funny too)
-RahXephon (similar to Evangelion except the male lead isn't a whiny tool)
-Ergo Proxy (still trying to understand the subtext)
-Black Lagoon Series (fantastic characters, story line and animation)
-Claymore
75% of anime shows are fanservice trash, but the good ones, the ones with fantastic stories and characters, are the ones that make anime great. Some of my favorite shows were the ones that neraly had me in tears at certain points.

Tru tru, they really tend to screw up the meanings of any decently complex dialogue (anything not involving power levels) in the dubb'ed versions, especially for any of the ghost in the shell series/movies.

#1. AnimeCrazy.net is where I find the sub'd versions of Shippuuden. Usually have them up by Friday or Saturday morning (show airs in Japan on Thurs). Not sure where they get the subs but they are darn good. You can usually find all the episodes on Veoh, but there are so many spam and joke links that I just let AnimeCrazy find it for me.
#2. A LOT gets lost from the deeper shows like Ghost in the Shell when they are dub'd. As to learning Japanese, it is just something I'm sort of picking up without trying. Basically a lot of it is just the forms of address for strangers, friends, relatives, teachers, friend/teachers, older/younger ect ect. Also a lot of basic phrases like 'What do you mean' and 'Why would you do that' sort of stuff. Couldn't say how or why I'm picking it up, I did god awful learning Spanish in high school.
#3. I don't think your supposed to understand Evangelion. Maybe at the very end of the show it all sort of makes sense, but basically it is just one of those WTF? shows.

I was starting to think I was the only one who felt that way about Naruto. I will admit to liking a few of the characters, but the story just draaaaaagssss on and on. There's just way too much filler and monologing. What they really need is some better writers who will cut out the title character (he makes me cringe) and add some more action and less standing around staring each other down while telling their life stories for what feels like hours.
My short rant is now over.

When I say Naruto, what I actually mean is Naruto Shippuuden. The original Naruto is 90% filler and I stopped watching that long ago. Shippuuden steps forward in time about 4 or 5 years. The characters are grown up and have lost (or toned down) a lot of the really annoying quirks that were present in the first Naruto. The story arc is also better being much more serious and has FAR less filler than the original, though there is still some present.

I really wanted to like it because of the mech design, very similar to what a real world tank armor design looks like.
Dont get me wrong, the designs for the Gundam mechas are iconic....but not to practical.
Tiara-like headpieces and wings shouldnt have a place in close combat
Anyways,
The Gasaraki storyline was way too nebulous for me, even after episode 12-13 I still had no idea what the overall purpose of each group was.

Quite a spread, I know. I actually started watching Death Note as a result of this forum (as seems to be common). Haven't finished it yet, though. Just got to the part where Light regains his Death Note.
And I know this seems really immature, but all of the other series besides Death Note served as study breaks. Great little 20-min episodes that made me smile and gave my brain a break. One of my guilty pleasures. I'm moving up in my maturity level, however, so I'm already looking for something else to keep me occupied when I'm through with Death Note.

These are "mandatory watch" for any INTJ that decides to try out anime imho:
(these three have INTJs as main characters)
Berserk
Code Geass
... and yeah, Death Note ^^
These are recommended as well:
Lain
Evangelion
Paranoia Agent
Ghost in the shell (movie and anime)
Monster
Then there is a very nifty anime movie called Grave of the Fireflies(Hotaru no Haka), which I urge all of you to watch as well. This is a formal challenge, especially for those of you who insist on not having emotions, or having complete control over them, hehe.
Ah btw, Naruto is cool because it has a very good INTJ character called Uchiha Itachi

I liked the dark tone of Evangelions story but I could not stand Shingi sp? (the male lead). He seems to spend most of the early episodes being a whining tool which I can't stand. I tend to like shows where the main characters stand outside the typical anime architypes in some way or avoids drawing the black and white lines of good vs. evil.
Ghost in the Shell is fantastic in terms of its animation and story arcs, but its characters are a little flat for me.
There are a few different areas where an anime can excell and get my interest.
#1. Visual style or appeal. There are some shows I have watched just because of fantastic art, character design or how the action is shown.
#2. Characters. Some characters just grab you and you want to sit inside their head and see what they will do.
#3. Story. There are stories that just grab the 'what if' part of your imagenation and carry it.
Sadly sifting through the mountain of 'fan service' or 'cute' animes in search of shows that have these qualities is a bit daunting.

While I normally enjoy pessimistic stories the end of Evangelion just left me cold. First thought in my head was "If I was there I would have preferred to die than survive"
the mechanical design won it for me though, even the big extension cords...

Code Geass
Geass is all the rage these days. Plot was cobbled together from previous Sunrise series, character hax come out of nowhere and CLAMP was never good. I don't really see the appeal, though I will watch it someday just to laugh at what a trainwreck it is.
Aside from Geass and Naruto, those are good series. If you liked Lain, I recommend Boogiepop Phantom and Mushishi; one is mindfuck, the other is superbly intellectual.

The main appeal of Code Geass is having an "evil" ruthless/manipulative INTJ character as lead, that's why I considerered it might pose some interest for the INTJ populace and thus I suggested it. Most of the stuff done nowadays is a recycling of older (and better) stuff.
Yeah Naruto is a total flop, especially lately... however, if you consider it on its context of shounen Anime, it doesn't come off that bad. Maybe it ranks 4th of 5th in my personal top in that category, behind Rurouni Kenshin, DBZ, Saint Seiya and Hunter X Hunter. Thanks for the recommendations btw, I love the "dementia" genre ;) !

I like BoogieBop Phantom as well... I like quite a few general anime that are now pretty "normal must views" but I like looking into the stuff that they produce in Japan if I can find any- there was one done mostly with washes that if you looked at it, you'd be hard pressed to call it an anime, save for the exaggeration in male and female expression types.
I like it when they push the visual barrier as well. I can't just WATCH an anime- sometimes it's too plastic for me.

This is my current top ten favorite anime movies. If a friend came over to my house and wanted to see an example of anime, this is what I have suggested. These are the movies that I think have the best story and are beautiful to boot. Keep in mind that this is a living, breathing review and will of course change over time as more movies are released.
I have tried to provide some information about the movie’s plot but not provide any major spoilers. I will provide a more detailed description of the plot when I review each movie individually over the next year.
Keep in mind that these reviews are only of movies. Not Anime series. This doesn’t mean that I don’t like the series (which there are several outstanding one,) but I just wanted to focus on movies.
10) Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust
Directed and screenplay by Mata Yamamoto
Music: Marco D’Ambrosio
Based on the novel by Hideyuki Kikuchi
Languages: English
Subtitles: English
Rating: R
Buy or rent? Buy
This is a story of a half human, half vampire and a group of mercenaries. They both are hired to complete the task of destroying a vampire and rescuing someone’s daughter. I feel the story is well done but in the end it was a bit anticlimactic. But if you are in for animated blood and violence like Ninja Scroll then this will fit the bill.
It is graphic and bloody. I do not recommend it for children. I would be ok with my teenagers watching it (when that time comes.)
9) Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence.
Director: Mamoru Oshii
Writer: Mamoru Oshii
Languages: Japanese
Subtitles: English and french
Rating: PG-13
5.1?: Yes
Buy or rent? Buy if you are an anime fan, otherwise just rent it.
Just like in the television series and the first movie, this is another detective story. It is pretty and full of action. If you like the first one that this is a must buy, but keep in mind that it is a different style of writing with a different twist.
There are two problems I have with this version though. The first is it is only in English subtitles. I know some people prefer it but I want the option to choose. The second problem is the story can be a little hard to follow. I only suggest this movie if you’re in a thinking mood.
It is violent so I only recommend mature children (teens?) or adults watch it.
8) Princess Mononoke
Director: Hayao Miazaki
Writer: Hayao Miyazaki
Music: Joe Hisaishi
Languages: English, French, and Japanese.
Subtitles: English for the hearing impaired and literal translation English.
Rating: PG-13
5.1?: yes

This movie takes place in the past where mankind and nature are in conflict with each other. So is the human race with itself. It is a ruthless story that is centered around a girl raised by wolves and a hero that just wants everyone to get along. One of the cool things I like about this movie is that there is no true good versus evil concept. Each group of characters has their own strengths and flaws. It is also well written with an engaging story to tell.
I suggest that parents watch this before letting their children view it. I don’t consider it graphic like in Ninja Scroll, but some head’s and limbs are removed in the fight scenes, which may disturb younger viewers.
7) Ninja Scroll
Director: Yoshiaki Kawajiri
Writer: Yoshiaki Kawajiri
Music: Kaoru Wada
Languages: English, Japanese.
Subtitles: English.
Rating: NR but should be R
5.1?: Yes
Buy or rent? Buy only if you like animated violence
This is a very violent Samurai/Ninja story. I would consider this to be more like a mythology because of how it is told. The characters in this movie remind me a lot of greek/roman and Southeast Asia mythologies. A young hero is given a task to destroy an evil character and encounters people along the way that want him dead. I joked around with my friend that this was Samurai showdown in movie form because of the many similarities between the characters and fighting scenes of both the game and movie.
This is the most graphic of all the movies in my top ten. Not only in violence, but there is one scene in which the heroine is in a compromised position. Only mature individuals should watch this.
6) Nausica: Of The Valley Of The Wind.
Director: Yoshiaki Kawajiri
Writer: Hayao Miyazaki
Music: Joe Hisaidhi
Languages: English and Japanese
Subtitles: English for hearing impaired and a literal translation English version.
Rating: PG
5.1?: No

This is another post-apocalypse movie. We are about 1000 years in the future and mankind is living like they did during the middle ages with a few differences. They have guns and big planes. Oh ya, there is also lots of menacing, and beautifully drawn, insects. A great anime for the whole family. But my biggest complaint is the movie is very predictable and not that original. But what it does do it does beautifully.
There is some violence but it is not graphic (in my opinion). I have no problem letting my children watch this. Both my daughter and son love this movie.
5)Steamboy
Director: Katsuhiro Otomo
Writer: Sadayuki Murai & Katsuhiro Otomo
Music: Steve Jablonsky
Rating: PG-13
Durations: 124 minutes
Buy or rent? Buy
A beautiful combination of story and animation. Definitely one of the best and it actually has some length to it too. But even though it’s long, it doesn’t drag. It really keeps your attention.
This is a story of a family of male inventors that get involved in a political battle between rival groups. It tells the story from the viewpoint of the boy and his adventures.
Parents should preview this before letting a child watch it due to some graphic animated violence near the end.
4) Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within.
Director: Hironobu Sakaguchi
Story by: Hironobu Sakaguchi
Writer: Al Reinert & Jeff Vintar
Music: Elliott Goldenthal
Languages: English and French
Subtitles: English and French
Rating: PG-13
5.1?: Yes
Buy or rent? Buy (Get it on Blue-Ray)
I have the same type of attachment for this movie as I do for Ghost in the shell. It is a beautiful movie that must be seen on a HDTV. But this is not the search for ones soul but for the salvation of the Earth (or Gaia). In the process of saving the Earth a love story does develop. There is plenty of action.
It is not that graphic but lots of people do die as well as cussing, so I recommend that a parent preview it before allowing their children to.
3) Spirited Away
Director: Hayao Miyazaki
Writer: Hayao Miyazaki
Music: Joe Hisaishi
Languages: English, French, and Japanese
Subtitles: English for hearing impaired and a literal translation English version.
Rating: PG
5.1?: Yes

I was blown away by this movie the first time I saw it. It threw me for several loops both in its story and animation. The story also flows very well and it doesn’t slow down. It is basically a story about a girl that gets trapped in the spirit world and she is trying to find a way to free herself from this world. So far it is my personal favorite of Miyazaki’s films.
There is a little violence but not much. I have no problem letting my children watch it.
2) Akira
Director: Katsuhiro Otomo
Screenplay: Katsuhiro Otomo & Izo Hashimoto
Music: Shoji Yamashiro
Languages: English and Japanese
Subtitles: English
Rating: NR but I would consider it R.
5.1?: Yes
Buy or rent? Buy
This is considered by some to be the start of great anime. It is a great story with great visuals, and I feel it was original for its time. Out of all of these movies this is the one every Anime fan should own.
It is basically the story of a government that is conducting evil experiments and how a boy gets in the middle of it. Saying anything more would spoil the surprise.
I do not recommend it for children because of a few violent scenes and brief nudity.
1) Ghost in the Shell.
•Director: Mamoru Oshii
•Writer: Kazunori Ito
•Music: Kenji Kawai
•Languages: English and Japanese.
•Subtitles: English.
•Rating: NR, but it should be R.
•5.1?: Yes

Ghost in the shell takes place in the future. It is basically a mystery and this mystery is being solved by a special internal organization called section 9. Section 9 is an elite team of computer hackers and para-military individuals. It is full of action and is also a beautiful movie that must be seen on a HDTV.
This is not just an action movie, there is a deep message to it. One person’s search for her own soul and meaning in life. If you like the matrix then you will like this movie.
I do not recommend it for children because of violence (like in the first scene you get to see a head being blown off as well as a naked female body.) For mature audiences only.
As far as Manga goes, here is my top ten list:-
10: Antique Bakery by Fumi Yoshinaga
Digital Manga
Yoshinaga has quickly become of my favorite manga creators, and Antique Bakery is very much the reason for that. She has the ability to turn on a dime from laugh out loud comedy to remarkably touching emotional scenes. Her art is spare and therefore very precise about what she chooses to show, and I have yet to see another creator so eloquent with pacing and gesture. She deftly illuminates everything from the pain of unrequited love to the satisfaction of creating the perfect pastry. While the story features the most tempting descriptions of pastries (and makes every reader wish there was just such a bakery staff with beautiful men down the street), the true heart of the book shows how people create families out of their coworkers, and how strong those bonds can be. I’m also pleased to report that this is a series that all kinds of readers seem to enjoy, even those that don’t normally like manga.
9: Clover by CLAMP
Tokyopop
This is actually the first manga I sat down and read. I didn’t know it at the time, but it was a bit of an experiment for the famous all-woman group CLAMP. The tale, a science fiction story of genetically engineered people as weapons, peppered with bursts of violent action and meditations on the nature of love, works more like visual poetry than traditional dialogue. CLAMP has always been masters of design, and the details in costume and panel placement show why (their current series Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle and XXXholic show off their talents equally well.) Sadly, it’s out of print now. (Although with all these omnibus editions of titles coming out from Tokyopop, I’m hoping they might reprint it… please, Tokyopop?)
8: Death Note by Takeshi Obata and Tsugumi Ohba
VIZ Media
This is possibly one of the talkiest manga out there -- the speech bubbles seem to take over panel after panel -- but with Tsugumi Ohba’s stellar art and a crackerjack mystery plot, you barely notice just how much time has passed. The unsettling cat and mouse game between the righteous killer Light and the oddball but brilliant detective L is riveting, and seldom does a story keep you so carefully torn on who you want to triumph in the end. Ohba’s art is dark and delicate at the same time, and who knew there were so many ways to make extended conversations exciting?
7: Lone Wolf and Cub by Kazuo Koike
Dark Horse
I’m a sucker for samurai stories, and from this masterpiece all modern samurai manga flows. Kazuo Koike’s story zeroes in on honor, betrayal, revenge, and loyalty all while following a samurai and his young son across the landscape of Feudal Japan. Koike’s art is far from the polish and slick design of typical manga creators, but every line is beautiful and deliberate, and every moment, from brutal fights to the rare moments of calm, is poignant. Dark Horse as a publisher puts out great seinen works, and takes some much appreciated risks with its titles.
6: Monster by Naoki Urasawa
VIZ Media
When the brilliant Dr. Tenma defies hospital politics to save a poor boy over operating on the town’s mayor, he unwittingly sets into motion of events that will haunt him for years. For not only will he lose his job and his social status, but that young boy will grow up to become his worst nightmare. Urusawa’s take on the serial killer trope is gripping, especially as it shows the way Tenma is slowly driven to madness from afar by his charming, sadistic nemesis. Few manga really force you to run out and get the next volume as soon as possible, but Urusawa is a master at twists and turns that leave you hungry for more.
5: Paradise Kiss by Ai Yazawa
Tokyopop
While I was neither a model nor a fashion design student, this series calls out to all the arty outsiders who rebelled from high school normalcy and decided it was time to stop caring what other people think. Ai Yazawa’s lanky character design and immaculate sense of fashion makes each volume a spectacle to look at, but beneath the façade is a strong coming of age story. Everything from self-confidence to bittersweet first love is covered, but Yazawa avoids the sparkles and rosy resolutions of most shojo tales and instead illuminates a realistic tale of the experiences that make one teen girl into a woman, even if she’s not quite ready for it.
4: Planetes by Makoto Yukimura
Tokyopop
Just to reassure you all that I’m not all about girly comics, I must include this compelling science fiction tale. I grew up reading my dad’s collection of 1950s-1970s classic science fiction novels, and since then I have a soft spot for sincere science fiction. This tale of space garbage collectors may not sound like something you should run out and buy, but it is by far one of my favorite takes on space exploration. It’s not about space aliens or intergalactic wars -- it’s about the wonder and tedium of space, the families we build out of like-minded companions, and the very human need to explore. It’s also very possible -- no improbable techno babble here, just a direct extension of what our own space programs have accomplished.
3: Yotsuba&! by Kiyohiko Azuma
ADV Manga
There are very few series where I finish every volume with a smile and a sense that all is right with the world, but Yotsuba&! is definitely one of them. Centering around a naïve and energetic five year-old, this is one of those books that’s all about the everyday wonder kids feel without even trying. It never fails to make me laugh, especially when Yotsuba is contending with new ideas (like doorbells) or playing gangsters. I just ignore the fact that it’s published in a magazine aimed at twenty-year old men. Just… don’t think about that too hard.
2: Ghost in the Shell by Shirow Masamune
Dark Horse Comics
Masamune is famous for dense science fiction plots (so dense, in fact, he often indulges in numerous footnotes to explain the technical aspects of whatever device he’s using in a particular scene.) Ghost in the Shell is still my favorite of all his works. Not only does Major Motoko remain one of the most intelligent and fierce female characters in manga (and thus I can ignore that she walks around in what amounts to an armored bustier), but the complicated questions surrounding how much man and technology may eventually merge is still compelling after almost twenty years. The setting is filled with detail and intensifies the labyrinthine politics and crimes the Section 9 security unit tangles with, and anything that gets so technical and still makes the reader care has got count for something lol.
1: Berserk by Kentaro Miura
Dark horse
This series has lots of character development and readers will probably change their opinions of many characters in this manga, when more details of their desires and personas have been revealed. I won't tell any more about the important characters in this manga, because such basic things like if a character is a bad or a good person would be spoilers. You'll have to find your opinion yourself. The only one dimensional character, who doesn't develop at all, is an elf named Puck. His fighting abilities are almost zero, but he can heal light wounds almost immediately and he can spy on other people's conversations because he is so small. The reason why he exists in this manga is explained directly when Gutts asks him why he follows him around all the time. Puck answers that without him this manga would be too dark. This is the only conversation in this manga, which broke the atmosphere so much and it's only an excuse of writer of this manga for readers. Pucks actions are very funny to watch and he really lightens this manga a lot. He doesn't exist in volumes 3-13 at all, because these volumes are flashbacks. It's up to you, if you like him or not. I like.
This manga has very strong drama elements and I had to stop reading of this manga from time to time, because some plots were almost too much for me to handle.

That is the BEST (at the moment) Murder/Mystery Anime. The plot is the most complicated I've seen in any anime.
Seriously, watch the first 4 episodes... Oh... and its a bit blood thirsty as well.
other than that.. I'd recommend Death Note to any iNTJ.
Hellsing Ultimate is quite good too..

I've watched and enjoyed anime since childhood. Started out mostly watching Astro Boy, which I enjoyed quite a bit, and an ex-boyfriend bought a copy of it for me which sits on my shelf now.
Otherwise, I enjoyed:
-Escaflowne
-Rurouni Kenshin
-Fullmetal Alchemist (I HATED how this ended)
-Death Note
And even watched some silly anime like Excel Saga when I just needed a mindless laugh.
Edit: Oh, also watched Ghost in the Shell for a class once and found it fascinating.

Hello, I am an anime fan too, but I am very selective with it. For some reason, if many people watch a determined anime/serie I stop watching it. I have a profile in myanimelist (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.) if you want to add me ^^
I enjoy a lot of anime, some of these are here:
*Ghost in the shell -- Matrix sucks
*Cowboy Bebop -- This is a real piece of art, the OST is beautiful
*Samurai Champloo -- Amazing anime, the fight scenes are well developed
*Seven Samurai -- I have to mention that Akira Kurosawa participates in this
*Grave of the fireflies -- If you not cry after you see this, you're not a human
*Full Metal Panic! -- Good military sci fi anime. Very hillarious too
*Argento Soma -- If you like evangelion, Argento Soma is far much beyond.
*5cm per second -- A romantic story with outstanding visual development
*Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei -- You need to know a little bit of philosophy to fully understand the paradox, irony and psichological bombardment of this.
*Escaflowne -- Beautiful OST and a great story
*Air -- This and clannad makes a excelent time to watch, but be ready to be emotionally broken apart at any moment
*Clannad
*Eve no Jikan -- Not finished but it promises a piece of art
*Appleseed -- Detail oriented, nice fighting scenes, interesting story
*Ghost Hunt -- Shinichiro Watabe is one of the best
*Ergo Proxy -- Very, very hard to understand. Amazing OST
*Welcome to NHK! -- Oh man! The very best of slice of life anime
*Yukikaze -- One of my favourites, Ost /10 Story/10 rewatch/10 Visual/10 Sound/15 ^^
*Memories -- Bizarre and pretty worth to see collection
*Tokyo godfathers -- Beautiful
*Brave History -- For kids and not kids.
*Read or Die -- Good OST and very very good references to some clever books.
*Planetes -- Sci-fi, one of the best.
In manga, I don't read a lot of it. After all the pros and cons, Im still admiring all the work behind and animation. Im a huge fan of anime music, in special the works of Yokko Kanno, Muramatsu Ken, Taku Iwasaki and Dougen Shiono & Satoshi Mishiba. The only manga I would recommend would be Goth. Very interesting story and characters.
In anime, I recommend the works of Studio 4c, bizarre and very very interesting. In special the Amazing Nuts! collection and the Genius Party collection.
That's my list. ^^

One Piece is by far the most stimulating anime/manga I've ever been blessed with.
I've read/watched Death Note, and many others as well... I could list them all but they would not be as worth while.. I hate most typical shonen animes such as Naruto because it's basically a bunch of guys jumping around fighting with no good plot..
One Piece has an incredibly deep plot, which is overshadowed by humurous - odd drawn characters.. Once you get into it (30-40 episodes) It gets really deep, and for some reason I find it continuously gets better. Highly recommended..

Had a roommate in college who was big into Evangelion, so I've more or less seen the entire series. Also ended up reading all the Rose Hip Zero novels in one sitting at a Barnes and Noble once. They weren't all that great, but it got to the point where I just wanted to know how the damn thing ended, so I had no choice but to keep reading.
The aforementioned Grave of the Fireflies is simply one of the best movies ever made, anime or not.

My home computers hard drive fried and I had to send it off to get fixed so I am going into serious withdraw as I was following several of the new seasons anime via internet.
I think the best up and coming anime that I have found recently is X'amd: Lost Memories. Very bright visuals (think Eureka 7 style animation and characters) contrasted with what is a at times a very dark or serious storyline about a war and the main characters quest to understand himself. Characters are very interesting and the story seems to avoid a lot of the typical pitfalls that snare so many anime. Season 1 was done and season 2 was about to start when my computer ate it.

I used to be much more active with A/M but for the past couple years I've mostly watched movies or series that stand out. I'm a fan of weird stuff and open for recommendations *hint*.
So here's few of my favourites.
Movies
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Tekkonkinkreet, Mind Game, Jin-Roh, Voices of a Distant Star, Five Centimeters Per Second, Dead Leaves, Cat Soup, Akira, anything by Satoshi Kon (Tokyo Godfathers, Millennium Actress, Perfect Blue, Paprika) and Studio Ghibli (Laputa - Castle in the Sky, Spirited Away, Nausicaä, Totoro, etc.).
And let's add two Korean animations as well; Wonderful Days (can't remember much about the plot but the animation is beautiful) and Aachi & Ssipak.
Series
Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann, FLCL, Paranoia Agent, Serial Experiment Lain, Gankutsuou, Great Teacher Onizuka, Kino's Journey, Last Exile, Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo.
Manga
Monster, PlanetES (I'm not usually into space-stuff but this one was amazing), Death Note, Yotsuba&!, Hellsing, Emma and Ai Yazawa's work (NANA, Kagen no Tsuki, Paradise Kiss).
I think I forgot few titles so I'll add them later.
And I also watch J/K-Drama, and don't get me started on Asian movies...

Sure, I'm in desperate search of new anime liken to the ones I have an appreciation for.
Dot Hack Sign
Outlaw Star
Evangelion
Serial Experiment Lain
Ghost In The Shell
Cowboy Bebop (especially Cowboy Bebop)
Wolf's Rain
Record Of Lodoss War
Trigun
Last Exile
Gun Grave
Afro Samurai
Gundam Wing (not a big Gundam fan)
FLCL
Texhnolyze
Ergo Proxy
Guardian Of The Sacred Spirit
Samurai Champloo
Blue Sub#6
Jin Roh: The Wolf Brigade
The Escaflowne Movie (I still watch that DVD frequently)
Akira
Kite
The Animatrix
Ghost In The Shell: Innocence
Vampire Hunter D
Wonderful days
Etcetera
But the kind of anime I like are incredibly rare and difficult to come across, I mean, I'm fairly certain I'd like Witch Hunter robin. . . or Blue Gender. . . but that's all, I don't know of any others I might like but haven't seen.
I love the anime with the high quality / veristic animation and or more visceral theme or the noir of Cowboy Bebop, something I can actually try to place myself in. I dislike most anime because it's too generic and boring and annoying or cartoonish in the classic sense. The ones that don't necessarily have to be anime and would work out in any other format are great to me.
PS: Rahzephon's ok, it's in the style I'd like but I'm just not a big fan of it

Most of those aren't what I think of as rare or difficult to come across. Would I be right in guessing that you mostly watch anime after it comes out in English?
I'm seeing mostly what I think of as "grittier" series that have a bit of an action focus with maybe a bit of drama, no real attraction to the "moe" factor. I'm going to guess from the list that you liked the last half of trigun more than the first half?

Anime;
Gundam series
Macross series
Bleach
Manga
Gantz
Bleach
I like the technology and the giant fighting robots behind Gundam and Macross. Macross is kinda unique since it a merger between culture and war(the earlier series explains it all) while Gundam is more political and justice/morality.
Gantz is just crazy though. He develops characters then kills them off with super monster fighting. But the Oni boss and this latest pause kinda killed it for me. 1 issue every two weeks with nothing happening is kinda boring and the Oni fight just kept going and going and going. Back in high school I was all into anime but it kinda died off.

I remember watching about 2 episodes and lost interest.
The reason I like Gundam/Macross is because they are tools of the military or paramilitary. Where they develop entire systems just for these robots to function correctly like the Carriers to programs. And the designers of the series take a lot of time making them authentic and most of the time they don't go super god suit(like Strike Freedom).
For instance Gundam 00 started pretty bad but picked up when the enemy had equal(or near equal) weapons and armor to the gundams.

Gurren Lagann starts off a bit slow....Trust me at first I was iffy about the show...but then it took off and became epic.
Extremely epic and badass.
-Epic speeches (Which would be corny..except gurren lagann makes them badass)
-One mech punches an enemy through dimensions
-Final fight has a mech (Sort of) that's bigger than the milky way galaxy
But i suppose if you like the mech animes for the whole military thing you might not like it. I'd show you some clips from later on but youtube keeps taking them all down.

Yea, I remember watching the first two. Seeing some weird fight involving a ship then lost interest. Its to "no holds barred" for me. I'll stick to my military gundam and macross series. The only thing I don't like about Gundam is they tend to get preachy and whinny.
I also died a little when I found out Wing was originally a yaoi.
I remember though back in HS I use to watch a lot of NGE, BC2040, Blue Gender and Nadesico.
I'll probably re-pick up Nadesico when I get the chance too. Once college starts I have to watch something in class.

I'm quite the opposite, I'm not a fan of the military-esque anime series, I really prefer the more out-there-no-holds-bar-over-the-top-insanity ones as you can clearly tell..

Shikabane Hime and Noir look like they have potential to be good but most of all thanks for reminding me of Le Chevalier d'Eon, I'd forgotten all about that one. I don't have to be annoyed by the characters getting nose bleeds for stupid reasons or falling into the floor just because they got surprised by a statement, not every character has the exact same face, no giant kawaii eyes, no stupid looking hair, it's an attempt at verism and has quality animation (frames of actual realistic movement), nice texture or gradation. Seems that Le Chevalier d'Eon is what I've been looking for, I do love the ones to which its creators put forth real effort and talent in making them. Come to think of it, I just remembered another exquisite anime I was somewhat looking forward to i.e. it's also in the style I like, I believe it's called A Moon Light Mile.
Yes, I prefer the later episodes of Trigun to the earlier less deep and visceral ones.
PS: before someone mentions it, I've seen all of Ergo Proxy and although I'd obviously much appreciate its style and I do, I didn't like it dragging out to the unsatisfying story ending it did.

I've found manga to be more graphic ;) and entertaining than the animated versions so I stick to those.

Yeah, Mushishi is great! But some people say its totally boring to death. The Mushishi manga is great too.
I don't agree with your Bleach comment though. I think the anime is worse (after Soul Society arc) than the manga. Mangas will always be better than their anime adaptations in most cases.

I was a huge fan of Evangelion a couple years ago. I love everything about it. It touched on my emotions in a way few things have. Haha, when I used to play a lot of Halo 2/3 I always colored my character in the Unit-1 color scheme, purple, green and black. A live action Evangelion movie has been rumored for years now.
Berserk is also a good one. Lame though how it drew you in so much and cut off right at the crescendo of the story. I loved the one villain, Void I think his name was. He was the insightful, ugly guy with the exposed brain.

I have a long, long list of anime/manga that I would like to watch, but I live in a place where there is no TV signal, and even if there happened to be a signal, no channel shows any anime worth watching. Ugh.
I like FMA, Tsubasa, the Ghibli movies (Mononoke was what got me properly into anime), Wolf's Rain and .//hack, and if I had the chance, I would read/watch D-Gray Man, Death Note, FLCL, Serial Experiments Lain, and a whole lot of other anime/manga that I'm forgetting the names of right now. There are American animated films/series that have their charms, but the Japanese (and Europeans) seem to take animation much more seriously as a medium and as a form of artistic expression, which is very, very nice to see.

I'm more into manga than anime, but I love both. I used to spend a lot of money with mangas every month but now I only get yaoi online and stopped following my favorite series since I couldn't spend money on that and I don't have the patience to search for it online. I also really liked having the manga on my hands, online just doesn't do much for me. I have more than 100 mangas which I'm willing to sell, the priorities have changed unfortunately.
Some of the titles I enjoy but am not following anymore:
- Blade
- Chonchu
- Berserk
- Fruits Basket
- Kare Kano
- Angel Sanctuary
- Slam Dunk
- Tokyo Babylon
- Gravitation
and a lot others which I would spend a long time writing.

Why is there good anime on that list? Usually top 10 lsits are total crap, let alone to 50 lists. Disappointed that Legend of Galactic Heroes wasn't on there though, not because I expected it to be but rather because it means that she show has STILL not been licensed.

Why wouldn't there be? Just because it is a top 50 list doesn't mean it doesn't have at least some good anime on it.
I don't agree with their list, but they do have some of the best anime of all time on there (e.g., Samurai X, which is at the top of AnimeNfo's list and has been for a very, very long time).

I'm reading Vinland Saga right now, it's pretty good. Somewhat like Berserk. As for anime, my favorites are Mononoke and Monster.
GTO is a fantastic anime too. Other good comedies include Sakigake!! Cromartie High and Ping Pong Club. Probably INTx style humor, as most other people seem to be puzzled about what's so funny about them.
All excellent animes, but the underlined are ones I highly, highly recommend and can't imagine not having watched. Each one changed my life in some small, but still significant, way. Yes, even School Days. *evil grin*

Animes you...
~Inflict on someone you like getting rises out of: Gantz, School Days, Air, Boogiepop Phantom
~Watch with someone you love (movie length): 5 Centimeters Per Second, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Grave of the Fireflies, Read or Die OVA, Howl's Moving Castle
~Watch with someone you love (series): Princess Tutu, Nodame Cantabile, His and Hers Circumstances (ignore the crappy ending), Midori no Hibi, Romeo x Juliet
~Pick up for sheer badassery: Death Note, Berserk, Noir, Code Geass, Rurouni Kenshin (until the Kyoto Arc ends) and its OVA "Reminiscence", Getbackers, Wolf's Rain, Great Teacher Onizuka
~Learn something from: Yakitate!! Japan, Mushishi, History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi, Hikaru no Go, Prince of Tennis, Major
~Have high hopes for but might be disappointed in: The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, most Miyazaki films. *prepares for the stoning* >.<
*stones you for dissing Miyazaki films*
Your underlined choices are great, however, especially Princess Tutu, Grave of the Fireflies (), and Reminiscence.

Cromartie High Spoiler:
The fact that Freddie Mercury is a student in the school drives me to hysterics, moreso than the gorilla and Mechazawa.

A-ha! I knew there would be nerds of various sorts on an INTJ forum! Glorious.
Alcestis, you are very right that Gantz is something you inflict on other people. I had a friend sucker me into the first three episodes. "Wait, it gets better. Really." By episode 3 he couldn't hide the joke and let me in on it. "It doesn't get better." Jerk.
I'm a fan of mecha, though not to the exclusion of other types of anime. Gundam (U.C. and GundamX) will always be my favorite, and I typically prefer real-mecha over super-mecha.
I recommend the early Gundam stuff very strongly. Watch the original to learn the universe, then watch 08th MS Team to really get sucked in. Then 0080 to bawl your eyes out.
Since it looks like we have a knowledgeable group here, I'm also interested in hearing recommendations. Obscure but obtainable mecha recommendations would be great.

By episode 3 he couldn't hide the joke and let me in on it. "It doesn't get better."It became a sort of "chicken dare" - like two straight men buddies leaning in to kiss each other, and the first person to give in to heterosexual disgust loses. I watched it until the bitter end with a cohort. xD Mecha anime? You said you're a fan of the Gundam universe, have you seen SEED? My guy friends liked it, but I wasn't that big a fan. Other good ones include Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (just wade through the first few episodes; they're horribly boring but it gets better), Code Geass (well, it has mecha IN it, so...), Full Metal Panic, and Rahxephon. I hesitate to include the last one because people who have seen Evangelion just compare it to that, but if you strip away preconceived notions and just watched it as it was, it was fun.

Your underlined choices are great, however, especially Princess Tutu, Grave of the Fireflies (), and Reminiscence.Hey now, I listed Howl's Moving Castle! I forgot about Laputa, that should be up there as well. ;) Princess Tutu is so ridiculously underrated, wouldn't you agree? I admit I was turned off from the thing for about a year because of the name: you can't get any more flowery and girly than that. But it was dark, engaging, and fascinating. Not to mention I loved the Ahiru and Fakir dynamic. Grave of the Fireflies was the very first anime I watched and... my God. I actually have a huge beef with Reminiscence. Seeing the OVA first before the series made me think, "Wow, the anime must be completely bad-ass!" Then they turned Kenshin into a clumsy doormat who you just couldn't bear to watch after the Kyoto Arc ended. *anguished cry*
But really Rudy, if you liked all those, I recommend Nodame Cantabile with all my being. That goes to anyone, really. The count is up to four of people who have never even seen anime before taking a chance on this series at my request... and they end up converting to the dark side. Ah, future suckers I can con into School Days. :D
