But really Rudy, if you liked all those, I recommend Nodame Cantabile with all my being. That goes to anyone, really. The count is up to four of people who have never even seen anime before taking a chance on this series at my request... and they end up converting to the dark side.
I will second this. If anyone has any doubts whatsoever, check out this clip (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.).
Ah, future suckers I can con into School Days. :D
nice boat.
Kotonoha's laugh from the Conclusion of Blood ending of the game is my ringtone.
Standing around in an airport a woman asked me once if it was the laughter of my children. >_>

Since it looks like we have a knowledgeable group here, I'm also interested in hearing recommendations. Obscure but obtainable mecha recommendations would be great.
Great thinkers before you have compiled lists of these, but I'm not sure I agree to all of it. They're overall good though.

The good version of that list is in text format. The pictures are just some stuff that one guy threw together; everyone in /a/ did the original text list and it had meaningful criteria as well as quality check when produced.

Never watched much anime. But what little I have seen I really like.
Ghost In The Shell (The original film and Solid State Society)
Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex and 2nd Gig
Cowboy Bebop

Trigun
Bleach
Mobile Suit Gundam
Is Voltron anime? I think it is but I could be wrong.

How could I forget to add Death Note to my list?
Anybody seen the live action Death Note movies?
If not I highly recommend them to anyone who is a fan of the anime series.

Hellooooooo Nurse!
Dude, I love anime and manga! I didn't know there was a thread for it here!! I thought most of the INTJ's here were adverse to anything fun. (That's what I get for not looking around in this place.)
My favorite series: (not in real order)
Death Note
Fullmetal Alchemist
Cowboy Bebop
Wolf's Rain
Chrno Crusade
Gensoumaden Saiyuku
Le Chavalier D'eon
Inuyasha
Ranma 1/2
Ghost in the Shell
Trigun
Get Backers
Bleach
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Elfen Lied

I've seen a little, always with subtitles. Cowboy Bebop is easily my favorite series; Last Exile and FullMetal Alchemist were pretty good as well. I did like Samurai Champloo and Now and Then, Here and There, though I never got to finish them...Witch Hunter Robin was OK, but took too long to develop a plot, and then left quite a few unanswered questions.
More often I stick to movies. Studio Ghibli films (Miyazaki) are right at the top of my list, as is Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (except for the stupid English-only language track). Akira was actually one of the first Anime films I saw, back in high school.

Only anime I could ever watch was Shinchan (because it was funny and crude) and the only manga I could ever read until the end was Death Note and Akira. I used to be a huge fan of anime and manga a few years ago (from ages 10-13, roughly?) but I lost interest.

My absolute favourites:
Death Note
Fullmetal Alchemist
Houshin Engi (much better in manga form than anime)
Fruits Basket
Other enjoyable series:
Trigun
Jing: King of Bandits (eccentric world!)
One piece (can't say much that's objectively good about it, but it's fun)
Code Geass (aside from the emotional inconsistency)
.hack//SIGN (if only for the music)

I am still in the beginner stage, but I really enjoyed Death Note and Shakugan no Shana (and it's from the latter my avatar came from.). I hope I can tackle Bleach later.
What animes did you enjoy? If you don't like these, what are the reasons? I saw in the Asian dramas thread that some of them are too "emo..." Is that one of your reasons?

Studio Ghibli is quite well rendered and storywise amazing.
I've watched less series compared to reading manga. I devour manga. I love PreTear though. That was epic and pulled heart strings (the anime).
I seriously want to watch Excel Saga, Battle Angel Alita and Trigun.
Edit: OMG. How could I forget about this one: Azumanga Daioh. Which was just amazing (the real actor one).

A little bit. I enjoyed some of the classics like Akira and Ghost In The Shell, and I've liked most of Miyazaki's movies.
Also, I was hooked on the Space Cruiser Yamato series when I was a kid.

Berzerk is probably still my favorite anime. The anime is a good bridge to get you hooked on the manga.
I also dug Last Exile, Fantastic Children, Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Paranoia Agent.
I liked Death Note, but I read all of the manga first. The manga has a stronger end to Light's demise which comes back full circle. I also liked Fullmetal Alchemist, and prefer the manga (though I haven't seen the remade series yet).

However, since DragonBall Z I have never watched a series with more than 50 episodes. Bleh.

I'm a fan of animation in general, but love Asian animation more than the rest.
My first was Akira. It's still one of my favorites. Up near the top I'll also throw in: Mushishi, Death Note, anything Miyazaki, Ouran Highschool Host Club (shojo, but very funny), Trigun, Paprika, Darker than Black and Samurai Champloo.
I seriously want to watch Excel Saga,
While some people love this series, I do not suggest it. I forced myself to try 2 episodes and just couldn't go any further.

I love anime, primarily. I've watched a whole lot, I own a whole lot, and that's not counting my manga. Just to give you an idea, I have watched (or own in DVD sets):
Gensoumaden Saiyuki
Inuyasha
Cowboy Bebop
Akira
Ghost in the Shell
Miyazaki Films (i.e. Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away, Kiki's Delivery Service, The Cat Returns)
The Girl Who Could Leap Through Time
Millennium Actress
Voices of a Distant Star
Gilgamesh
D.N. Angel
Death Note
Fullmetal Alchemist
Bleach
Samurai Champloo
Elfen Liad
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Escaflowne
Kyou Kara Maou
Chrno Crusade
Boogiepop Phantom
Trigun
Get Backers
Fruits Basket
Quran Host Club
Chobits
Descendants of Darkness
Mirage of Blaze
Sailor Moon
Cloud Captor Sakura
Ranma 1/2
Wolf's Rain
Chevalier D'eon
Trinity Blood
Van Helsing
I first discovered anime in my teens, when my brothers got me addicted to the legendary, Akira, shortly followed by Ghost in the Shell. When I was in the hospital after my car accident in undergrad, I started to watch anime online to pass the time while I was recuperating, and watch I did (I couldn't walk, anyway, what else was I to do?)
So, you can certainly say I'm a fan. I've started watching Asian Drama (again primarily Japanese) on youtube and I love it just as much. There's nothing better, IMO.

The Miyazaki films are beautiful to watch but sometimes is a little too 'spiritual' for me. Though I love how he is able to craft an adventure into every film and the music is great.
I loved Death Note, but I felt like the first 10 episodes were the best. After they brought in Near and Mello, I thought it got cheesy and I had a hard time following the plot; the cat and mouse thing got so long winded! He did this and that the other person countered with that who didn't know he had that etc. lol
DBZ stinks except the fights. Long cheesy plots, great animated fighting though. I'm always like fight already! Remember Frieza vs. Goku? That fight literally went on for like 20 episodes! 5 of them where he was charging up the Spirit bomb!
Right now I'm watching Naruto which I really enjoy, but like I was saying in another thread its getting cheesy. sigh*

Naruto is good. But the Shipudden arc bores me.
Read Full Metal Alchemist manga, it's different from the anime and so much better than the anime, since the manga hasn't ended, but the anime already did. The content of the manga and the plot and everything is evidently richer than that of the anime.
- One Piece
- Uzumaki (horror manga)
- Death Note
- Bleach
- Ouran High Host Club (watch the anime, the manga is really draggy and boring right now)
- Nana (female manga)
I just started watching Death Note yesterday and just wondering if other people noticed this. In episode 13, it said that "The DEATH NOTE will be rendered useless if the victim's name is misspelled four times." but in episode 1, Light wrote the motorcycle guy's name at least 8 times. I guess the story will still make logical sense though as long as the motorcycle guy's real name is one of the first four names. Too bad I don't know the elapsed time between Light writing down each name and the time that the guy died. XD

One of my English professors quoted some dead guy once. It went to this effect:
"stories prepare us for life"
On that note, I believe anime can be used to help us understand ourselves and others around us better. As such, I enjoy anime that can adequately help accomplish this understand.
So far, I only know of two: Dragon Ball Z and Cowboy Bebop

Am I the only one who likes Gundam at all? Mostly just Universal Century stuff, Mobile Suit Gundam 08th MS Team and A War in the Pocket, they were a bit of departure from allot of other Gundam series in that they both featured common soldiers that made mistakes instead of the Newtypes that kill mechas by the thousands. The OVAs had a realism not found it most mecha anime, like mechas needing regular maintenance and pilots getting frequently hit and injured. I've also watched Akira, Full Metal Alchemist, Ghost in the Shell, Princess Mononoke, Metropolis, Galaxy Express 999, Cowboy Bebop and, Jin-Roh the Wolf Brigade. As far as manga goes I've only read Chobits and Full Metal Alchemist.

My anime-watching days are mostly behind me, but according to my personalized Anime Database list (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.), I've seen 145 titles, which comes out to a grand total of about 2000+ episodes/movies. :nerd:
I'll list three of my more obscure favorites, since the popular ones have already been mentioned:
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure - this is a rather unknown shonen/action anime here in North America; it's based on a very famous, long spanning and innovative japanese manga; I didn't know about the MBTI at the time, but the titular Jotarou is a pure-bred INTJ—no wonder it became one my all-time favourites ;D (talking about the original 1993 OAV here, not the weaker prequel)
Mushishi - seinen series, superb writing, great art, philosophical themes & messages, perfect for a more mature and introspective audience
Planetes - seinen series, hard sci-fi, environmental themes, very character-driven

I watch gundam. I'm waiting for Unicorn to come out(its a UC timline). 0080 was good and so was the first half of 08th. The director died and the new one wanted more grand ace vs ace instead of the previous melee. The Gouf Custom vs EZ8 was his horrible idea.....if you think someone is going to betray you. The smart thing to do is give him a completely rebuilt suit(and now better) defending high priority targets...it's fool proof while making the team incompetent
Most people lost faith in Gundam at Seed. They tried to restart the UC time line with cooler and more advanced machines but failed miserably. I don't even want to go into how bad it was including Destiny and Stargazer. It's like a pre-teen drama. 00 and S2 was pretty good though. I skipped most of the series but most of the fights were pretty cool. Poor Lockon...
I still do watch Kenshin from time to time...Setsuna and Kenshin are hero INFJs.
I don't remember that in Death note.
They always show "How to use" before and after the commercial break in the middle of each episode. They also showed a rule that was used in the movie but not in the anime. (The one where if a name is written on multiple death notes, the first one written is the one that counts.)
Yes, I actually read those lol.
For some reasons i liked Elfen Lied a lot.

I seem to prefer older mangas... and most of the animes nowadays are crap so I don't watch it anymore (or maybe that's because I'm exposed to bad anime :D).
Some of my old-time favourite mangas
Dragonball

RAVE
Slam Dunk!

Lately I've found it hard to get into an anime and watch it to the finish or marathon it like I used to. Maybe I'm getting old. My favorite anime would be: Ghost in the Shell (GIG 1 but GIG 2 is pretty good), Princess Mononke, Porco Rosso, My Neighbour Totoro Simoun, Berserk, Dennou Coil and I have a soft spot for Ichigo Mashimaro (which is embarrassing to admit) and Melcanholy of Haruhi.
I tend to watch older anime for a variety of reasons, have anyone found anything new that's worth watching?

I highly recommend Mushishi. If you look around you can find a well-seeded high-quality mkv torrent of it or you can watch it with English dubs at Hulu.

I say Death note is the most intricate show ever conceived, but I started to cry(a first:cool:) at the end of the last episode, I was like NOOOOOOOOO!!!!. and bleach has awesome fights, while Naruto is just flat out awsome.
My favorites are Trigun, Gungrave, Cowboy Bebop and Initial D. Also, watched some Soul Eater the other night and quite enjoyed it.
I have to admit I prefer dubbing if done properly over subtitles. I feel like good English voice actors will bring another whole dimension to the show that is lacking when you don't understand the spoken language.

I don't watch anime as much as I used to, but I read lots of manga these days. To wit:
Favorite Anime
1) FLCL
2) Trigun
3) Ghost in the Shell
4) Cowboy Bebop
5) Most things Gundam
Favorite Manga
1) One Piece
2) Vagabond
3) Akumetsu
4) Full Metal Alchemist
5) History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi
That's about a third of the manga I keep up with. I still read Naruto and Bleach, though I'm not sure why anymore with the latter.

Top 5:
1. Evangelion
2. Monster
3. GITS
4. Baccano!
5. FMA
Evangelion, GITS, and FMA tend to be on everyones list, but I'm surprised no love for Monster? For sheer intensity, plot complexity, and intelligence, Monster beats Deathnote hands down.
Baccano! is an odd choice, but it's a short, thrilling ride packed with great animation and writing.
Dishonorable Mention: Gantz
Combine obscene amounts of gore and sex with a nonsensical plotline that tries to be cerebral but fails miserably, and you've got Gantz. Gantz has to be the most grotesque anime I've seen, and that's including Elfin Lied!

Just wondering if this is an intj thing, my boyfriend loves bleach, naruto and a few other japanese cartoons. I also find quite a few intjs have manga as their profile pictures?

As my heritage is Japanese I've been a lifetime reader of manga, but gravitate towards the "unusual shoujo" genre. Examples of my preferred authors are Yoshimura Akemi, Oono Junko, Watanabe Taeko and probably the two the most famous in my list, Tamura Yumi (Basara being her longest series, also made into anime) and Watase Yuu (Fushigi Yuugi).
I like Miyazaki for his environmental messages and beautiful artwork but generally do not watch anime. Oh, but I'm a fan of Tezuka Osamu, particularly his Black Jack and unfinished Phoenix (Hi no Tori) series, but anyone "into" anime should at least have respect for him.

Haha. Yeah, no lacking of fans here.
Death Note is the only anime I've liked. I tend to hate filler.
Do enjoy the Naruto manga though.
I'd check out a lot more anime if I was given it, but ya know.
I take it this isn't an ENFP thing?

I'd love Naruto except I can't stand all the dam padding (the "fights" seem to consist of people staring at each other and talking crap ), and the main 3 characters (a retard for whom everything always goes right, a self absorbed emo kid and a useless female?).
Show has merit, just can't handle the tortoise pace

You guys would probably go crazy knowing the ones that I do like.
Anime (no particular order):
Zettai Shonen (didn't like the second season as much though.)
Kemono no Souja Erin (Beast Lord Erin)
Kino's Journey
5 Centimers Per Second
Major
Prince of Tennis
Clannad (and after story also)
Myself; Yourself
Naruto.....
Bleach.....
Guin Saga
Saint Seiya (man this series is old ... but it is still going)
Hunter X Hunter
Gundam Wing/Seed/00
.Hack Twilight Bracelet.
Last Exile
Berserk
Ghost in the Shell
Grave of the Fireflies
I think the types of anime I tend to like are in bold. Tends to be slow-paced, fantasy, or contain some element that requires some form of thinking. There is more but currently I just can't think of them. Or rather I can't find many anime that has those sort of reasoning that I like
Manga
Still read Naruto and Bleach.......... trying to look for one that interests me. So far can't find any though... which is sad.
Hunter X Hunter - person doing the manga hasn't been doing well.

I've watched Witch Hunter Robin, s-CRY-ed, Naruto, and some others, but the only one I really go out of my way to watch now is Naruto. Mostly because I've stuck with it for so long, I want to know what happens in the end. If there ever will be an end. My friends read the manga, but I don't have the patience to do that.
Why do people think you are scum if you don't read the manga? I don't understand that. Yes, the anime has filler while the manga doesn't, but I didn't mind the filler that much. The filler storylines at least usually make sense...as opposed to the storyline of Naruto constantly searching for Sasuke who doesn't care at all about him.

I am watching a Japanese tv show a spin-off from a manga adapation called: Kimi Wa Petto[Tramp like us or My pet]. I highly recommened this show, it is about Sumire, a young professional woman who takes in a younger man as a pet, and her attempts to keep her coworkers and conventionally-perfect boyfriend[1] from finding out about her pet. It also deals with the romantic attraction between Sumire and her pet;To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. Sumire kind of reminds me between in ISTJ or INTJ sometimes just the way she brought about herself in the storyline. Although, it's a very weird and strange experimental story. Who knows can it truely happen to you?...

And you still love it because of the "except". The "except" there is the exact reason why I stopped reading that series.
Nothing new:
FMA
The plots are well planned, events are interconnected, and the thrill, and the seriousness, and the black humor, and the humor in the most serious moments without feeling awkward with it.
Not to mention how this drawer tried difficult perspectives to draw a certain scene.
Plus the drawer's a female. This shocked me.
Evangelion, GITS, and FMA tend to be on everyones list, but I'm surprised no love for Monster? For sheer intensity, plot complexity, and intelligence, Monster beats Deathnote hands down.
Vote for Monster. This series is incredible and I'm planning to buy the whole set and place it besides FMA.
1) shugo chara (because it's reallly cute and i guess...meaningful?)
2) naruto - because sasuke is back
3) bleach - because toushiro is cool
4) Umineko no naku koro ni - really gory/creepy/scary but I love it.
5) Kaze no Stigma - it's good. really good. just enough fighting, just enough romance, etc.
6) Pita ten (manga only) because the plot was kind of dark but really good
7) Fruits Basket (manga) because it's cute but serious.
8) skip beat because it's awfully funny.
9) Toradora - it confuses me in a good way (like, the decisions the characters make) but in a way, I get it. and i love it.
10) DN Angel - anime ending was kind of sudden for me, but still, i liked it.
I don't watch the dubs, i like the subs better. It expresses the anime better.

I used to watch Toonami in Cartoonnetwork a lot when I was a kid. It showed some anime and I re-watched some of them as a young adult. I'm happy to say I hardly grew out of it.
My favorites to this day:
DBZ(especially when it was in its early days)
Rozen Maiden(the gothic doll was cool)
Mobile Suite Gundam Wing
Hellsing
The Slayers(liked the main character)
Street Fighter(yeah I found a cool anime of this)
Digimon(1st season when I was younger)
Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Tenchi Muyo(I remember I liked it)
Strawberry Panic(shame on me...)
Yu Yu Hakusho(only saw it back then but I liked it)
Death Note(in the dark with my laptop through the first run was when this show is great)
Alice Academy(I'm starting to like)

I enjoyed The Last Airbender. Forgive me.
My favourite anime, though, is Code Geass. Lelouch is fascinating.
The Tales of the Abyss anime was also very good, I thought.
FLCL made no sense to me, but it looked nice.

I like both.
I`m fond of Hayao Miyazaki`s work (Howl`s moving castle, Mononoke Hime, Kiki`s delivery service,...). The girl who leapt trough time was also a great watch.
Other series I enjoy:
Darker than black
Witch hunter robin
FMA
Hellsing
Kuroshitsuji
Detective Conan
started with Ergo proxy, Soul eater
I often get really into an anime, but then after about 11 episodes I lose interest. Or I`m just not in the right mood to watch that anime. For example I`ve got 2 episodes until the end of Blood+ as well as Code geass. Death note, Wolf`s rain and Pandora hearts are all on hold.

I like the way anime tends to give realism the middle finger.lol.
There's only a few anime I really enjoy but the ones that I do like I hold in high regard. I do like the art style though,it's shinny and....different.

Kimi Wa Petto! (きみはペット) Yeah, great series. Loved the manga so much, I started watching the dorama (ドラマ). I'm willing to give most josei series a once-over. As far as anime goes, there are the staples: Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Cowboy Bebop, Bleach and Death Note.

I just watched the final episode of Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. It was a great series, and it had a much better ending than the original anime. The new characters from xing added a lot to the story, and Greed was fleshed out much more.

Naruto (The fansubbed anime for a while, now mostly just the manga cause the show got SOOOOO filler ridden. Still enjoying the manga very much so)
Fullmetal Alchemist
Escaflowne
Trigun
Bleach (first 60 episodes or so, then dropped off)
Hajime no Ippo
Deathnote
DBZ (A guilty pleasure)
Wolfs Rain (except I hated the final ending.)
Maybe its just me but with my experience it seems most anime starts off awesome, with cool story built up and concepts...but then starts flailing at the end and has a really big "WTF?" ending or just leaves you with no decent closure or pay-off.

I started Wolfs Rain and then someone ruined the ending for me and I stopped. :(
Akumetsu is a pretty intense manga.
I read that. Intense is a good word! The mangaka of Akumetsu, Yoshiaki Tabata is doing another called Wolf Guy... I like it, but there is an are you f'ing kidding me part that I really don't like. I am considering dropping it, but I want to how it ends.

Can anyone recommend me manga or anime about life? philosophy about life? Something along the lines of Kino's Journey or even Death Note (since it had morals in it). Oh and before I forget, anything about bands ala Beck/K-ON! I'd be grateful!

I'm not sure on the morals side for Death Note but I know Code Geass is VERY similar to it, but it's a bit more on the military strategic side and it's less dark, but you should try watching it altogether. I suggest watching up to around the 6th episode and things start getting people hooked from there. It doesn't grab immediate attention as Death Note once. I've also heard Monster is similar to Death Note, but I haven't gotten too far into it so I'll try to message back if I get more info.
Some of the anime and manga I've read/watched so far:
Bleach
Death Note
Code Geass
Vampire Knight (It's aimed at girls, and I don't find it really appealing)
Hellsing
Hellsing Ultimate (In my opinion I didn't like Ultimate or the original very much, it's very obvious it was aimed for a westernized audience so there isn't much plot, it's more bloodshed than any though if you're still interested Hellsing Ultimate is much better because it follows the manga more)
Currently reading/watching:
Gundam 00
Monster
Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Cowboy Bebop
Ghost in the Shell

I got really into anime this spring although my obsession seems to have faded. In any case, I watched Death Note, Last Exile, Spice and Wolf, XXXholic, Shigoku Shoujo, Princess Resurrection, Read or Die, School Days and Ouran High School Host Club.
Definitely the ones that were more girl-oriented, although I tried watching Honey and Clover and wasn't into all the drama/romance kind of stuff. I really want to watch Bleach and Trinity Blood.

I thought Bleach was pretty great at the Soul Society Arc, but I suggest that when you get to the Bount Arc just skip it. It's too damn boring because it's just a filler, and I can tell you that nothing noteworthy of coming up in the future is in that season (except the very last few seconds of the last episode). After that, I don't know what happened I just suddenly lost a bit of my interest, but I still find it a decently great series. Though after the Bount Arc is done you can tell that Bleach slightly transitions into more of the action side. The only thing that really makes up for the plot are the occasional surprises at every turn and those "WTF moments".

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Durarara! I've seen most of the others tho; Death Note is awesome; now if only I could get back to finishing it!
Also good is~
Avenger,
Allison and Lillia (mild),
Black Cat,<-short, good
X'amd lost memories,
Gundam Wing, <-wordy.
00 Gundam,
Wolf's Rain was different,
Gundam seed was good then they did some funky stuff with the second season...
Busou Renkin was also good
Durarara was awesome. Period. Headless riders, mad scientists, and gang wars all wrapped up in a nice, pretty package ^^ What could be better?
Death note also has the same crazy trend to it. I love it.
I'm sure I missed some. This is just my current favorites

I recently finished the original Mobile Suit Gundam (0079). While Gundam Wing is what I grew up with and nothing will replace that, I actually appreciated the original's technical depth, especially as regards military tactics and development of the Zeon production line. I'm a UC diehard now.
